To be entirely fair to Ms. Whitehouse, not that she deserves it especially, her complaints as regards Doctor Who were typically grounded in the fact that it was a show meant for a family audience. She was concerned by the scene of the Doctor being waterboarded because children might imitate it. Ludicrous though her fear may have been, she was fearful because Doctor Who was a family show. Torchwood, no doubt, would have appalled her sensitive nature, but I doubt she would have complained. Torchwood was a show for adult audiences, this was made very clear in the marketing, the timeslot after the 9pm watershed, and the contents of the show. Without being able to claim that she wished to protect children, I doubt Ms. Whitehouse would have had grounds to complain.

I wondered why The Curse of Clyde Langer wasn't on iPlayer for ages! Fun fact about another Sarah Jane Adventures episode that was censored, in original broadcast of The Empty Planet, Clyde and Rani "borrow" a pair of bikes, Clyde ends up getting the pink bike and complains that it's "a girl's bike," which has since been removed from the version on BBC iPlayer. The interesting thing about this is that Rani retorts "does it matter?" And later on in the episode Clyde cheekily takes Rani's (non-pink) bike instead; Rani is understandably upset but Clyde cockily responds "does it matter?" Thing is because the previous scene was censored the joke doesn't hit quite the same. I absolutely understand why they changed it though.

@therealpbristowАй бұрын
Even then, if only the Doctor hadn't *gone along* with the racism in certain scenes, it probably could have been chalked up to "just showing the culture of the times". The Doctor should at least have been above all that. Adding a scene where the Doctor and Leela compare the English attitude to Chinese folks to the tensions and indoctrinated bigotry between her own tribe and the Tesh *could* have made it (potentially) ground-breaking social commenary!. But for the 1970s (and the production team involved, whom I *mostly* deeply respect), that would be too much to hope for. =:o1

Because of the PEOPLE there. They're real people, and even though this is a show about aliens and time travel, this was incorrect. So they fixed it for later broadcast. Not that big of a deal compared to some of the others on this list.
