Placing parchment/baking paper on the tops of high cabinets will collect all of the grease, dust etc in a kitchen and will make cleaning so much easier. When cleaning, just (carefully) remove the paper, wipe down as usual and replace the paper again. I also made the most of that blank space at the end of our kitchen cabinets, nearest the door where the cabinets end, by fitting a Sunnersta rail from Ikea. This allowed me to hang a cotton, three pocket organiser which I use to store my electronic scales and favourite recipes. On this rail I also added two Sunnerta clip-on containers, making a great home for frequently used items like my kitchen timer. Thank you for your video, it's so great to see a video showing an actual small kitchen, so many videos refer to a small kitchen when it has an island and is twice the size of ours :) Thank you, and Tasha, for sharing x

Scraps should be composted. You can still keep in fridge but use a compostable trash bag so you can carry the whole thing to your outside green bin. I clip compost scrap bags with an alligator hair clip until ready to compost to outside bin, then just knot the bag. Also compostable: wooden matches, paper towels and their tubes, small TP scraps like if you quickly wipe a mirror; cotton, linen, wool, silk, and cupro, and bamboo fabric scraps; flushable wipes [never flush those], white paper, plant trimmings, paper plates and bamboo utensils, cotton or silk sewing thread, wooden buttons, old cotton rags, tissue paper & Kleenex, dust bunnies, dust, and hair, moldy food, and probably tons of shit I haven't mentioned. We barely fill our landfill bin anymore.

I have a lazy susan in my pantry because its very deep, and the stuff in the back would get lost. 3. ‘Depotting’ all your ingredients into jars that are alike, makes your kitchen look way better, and forces you to remember what you have. 4. Plan. For example, how often do you wish to go to the supermarket, and how often do you drive by a supermarket? I plan my groceries shopping to cover me for that time, so I don’t have to keep extra food around that ai don’t know when I’ll use.

One thing I do that might be helpful...I use command hooks on the inside of an upper cabinet door and hang my measuring spoons and cups (with handles) separately on their own individual hook. One, it gets them out of a drawer. Two, I can easily locate and use the measurement tool I need without having to take them off of a ring. Three. I can hang multiples of the ones I use frequently in a same recipe (ie tsp, tblsp, cup, and half cup) to speed up prep time.

Plates, silverware, mugs, coffee machine... all of that was on a shelf next to my dining table in another room. Thank you so much for these ideas. I don't really have cabinets like yours (mine are two-level that go all the way to the doors), so I can't really hang baskets or stuff on the back of the doors without losing shelf space. I also don't have space above my cabinets (I sure wish I did!), although I'm getting older and not as agile (and bad knees) so climbing step ladders is not an option for me anyway, lol. My entire wall behind my single countertop is backsplashed tiles, so the idea of Command Strip Hooks is one I will definitely be using for my utensils! Love the spice rack idea too.... if I can find one that I can attach to the tiles. Definitely going to take more advantage of the over-the-fridge space too! Thanks for some GREAT ideas!!! Just one question.... are you related to Joan Cusack? You kind of remind me of her! Great tips! I love how you organized you kitchen cabinets. The organizer products were terrific. They really organized your drawer well! I will be gifting some of those products. I had a kitchen, for years that only had three cabinets and a med not too deep pantry( which I loved and felt blessed to have. I turned a deep coat closet into a big appliance/ entertaining dishes/ extra food & accessories closet. I put in u- shaped shelves in the middle. It wasn't ideal ( you had to move things to get to other things), but it made my life work! I entertained a lot. My husband and I prepared all the food except for one entree, ( that my sister brought from a restaurant), for a surprise party for 80 guests ( and took food off-site. Tip; three friends cooked the stuffed shells - and two big side dishes; and brought them to the party); in that little kitchen. It was an elaborate party with cut floral arrangements, and balloons at every table. People were amazed that we did all the food from such a tiny kitchen! We frequently hosted 30-40 people. Now, my kitchen has three times the amount of cabinets and double the amount of helping appliances, two ovens etc and we rarely entertain. Lol! But we do help friends, often when they are entertaining. 😊I tell people not to let a small kitchen hold you back from entertaining! Now, my kitchen is bigger and I have

As a vegetarian I cook a lot of international cuisines and so I have a lot of different spices but very limited cupboards. So I bought 4 oz. glass jars with metal lids, small supermagnets and round printed spice labels. You put three or four of the magnets in the lids of the spice jar, fill the jars with the spices you use most and then they will stick to the side of your fridge. My jars are hexagons so they fit together in a nice pattern. I think it even looks cute. I have 21 jars up there right now. Just make sure the lids are screwed on securely or you can end up with a mess!

If you keep flour and other grain products near the ceiling, where heat rises, or even in a cabinet along an outside wall, especially in a warm climate, you will likely have flour weevils (aka mealy bugs), especially in the spring. I solve this problem by freezing these items for a couple of days when I bring them home. I include soup mixes, dry milk, pasta, and similar products-anything dry that's ground or processed and likely to be around for awhile-in this category. Works 100% of the time.

If you use them often enough to need to be stored where they’re really easy to access, they’ll probably not get too dusty between uses. If not, you’re probably right that this solution won’t work for you. I’d recommend the back of deep shelves or the top shelf in a closet for rarely used bulky things.

I'm too short to utilise the tops of my cupboards so efficiently, although I have put my pretty cake tins up there. I need the step stool just to reach the middle shelf of my tiny kitchen's 3 cupboards, let alone the top shelf! So, I recommend using the top shelf for things you use less often, and putting them into storage baskets, so that they are easier to lift down from the top shelf. And they keep that area neater. I keep heavy things on lower shelves. I also use a can organiser (they are so good!) but I wouldn't keep it high - I know I'd have an accident reaching high for heavy items! That could just be due to my height, or I'm clumsy! I like the appliances on top of the fridge, as they won't get messy like bits of paper, and odds and ends that usually end up on top of the fridge can do. I bought a storage trolley with 3 shelves to put things that I don't mind being on display, such as my glass jars of dry goods (pasta, flour etc.) and my mixer and mixing bowls (heavy, so on the bottom shelf). It juts out into the living area a bit, but I've made it look pretty with my cook books, lemons, herbs, the fruit basket and a pot plant on top. That way, I have more cupboard space for the things that can look unattractive or messy. That's really important in a one room studio. Old cookers (now just more expensive ones) used to have a space under the oven to store pans. Now, if you are really struggling for space, you could store your biggest casserole dishes inside the oven, until you need to use it. It's not ideal, but some larger cooking pots can take up a whole cupboard on their own. I used to do this, but I gave away my biggest casserole dishes. Which is my next recommendation - if anything in your kitchen is just taking up space and making your life harder instead of easier - get rid of it!

Using the space above the fridge and cabinets are definitely great things to point out, utilize that vertical space. Organizing items based on how often you use them is big too, like your pots and pans. I like using baskets, boxes and containers in my pantry too for small, lighter weight items. They don't have to be huge or spacious but big enough for what I need. For example, I've got a little container that I use for the drink packs that I mix in my water, another container for my gravy, seasoning and spice packets, and a box for the Ramen noodles that my boys have always loved but don't always stack good against 2 teenage boys. Keeping things in containers also makes it easy for me to grab them off of the higher shelves easily. =)
