I have a confession to make: I'm a bit of a messy person. I leave my socks on the floor a lot more often than I'd like to admit. I have to work a littler harder than others to keep my life tidy and clutter free, because that's how I like it the most. So in today's video I'm sharing 10 simple rules you can implement in your life to own less stuff. Because the less you own, the less there will be to pick up after. Unless you have a lot of socks.

When decluttering my clothing, knickknacks, books and accessories, I give my things to friends. A couple of times a year we have a "swap" at my house. I get rid of a lot of things, I see my friends enjoying them, and occasionally I get something nice for myself... all free. This has changed my life and my friendships, leading to deeper appreciation for each other, and more fun occasions when no money is exchanged.

I wish I had friends I could trust that way, but the last time a friend gave me things she didn’t want. They were under arm, stains from deodorant, and worn out elastic. I don’t even keep things in that condition. My friends don’t put much money or thought into clothing like I do so it wouldn’t be a good match I’m afraid.. same thing for household items. Their’s are old And not likely anything I would want. As I am redoing my house, I’m a bit particular at the moment.. not everything they have is old, they have a lot of beautiful, newer things, but they won’t get rid of those.

Yes. I find clicking the “like” button really helps me to limit impulse purchases. I let the item “sit” in my mind for a few days. When I go back to review my “likes” if it’s gone, sometimes it’s a relief! If I’m super disappointed I can usually go on the hunt to find it again, especially since I almost exclusively buy used. I also discuss my potential purchases w/ my friends/family there. Hope this helps! Your channel rocks, Christina.

So I am in my 60s and finding myself in a little bit of a crisis situation in my mind. I have a house by myself that is four bedrooms and full of treasures from my flight attendant life. I also inherited this house from my parents, so there are memories there also. I am overwhelmed and recently found myself with ADHD. It’s a fun challenge but it’s also a financial problem. I’m having a garage sale and I’m going to binge watch all your videos because I find them inspiring. Just stop by to say thank you so much! XX.

November 22 I decided enough is enough and that I needed to let the fantasy self go. I started posting my unused and unwanted items (clothes, shoes, bags) on second hand platforms. The goal is to have a wardrobe which fits into my life, declutter and use the sale money to pay my debts (these purchases are the reason I got into the debt) So far, I sold 80 items and even managed to pay a big chunk of my debts. Still more to be sold. I learned a lot in this process.

The wish list has worked wonders for me!! I prioritize it, so when I go to add something new I can see that there are 15 things ahead of it that I actually want more. It really gives me a LOT of perspective. Eventually I end up removing most things from my wishlist because I realize I didn't want them that bad

The one-in-one out stopped working for me when I was so detached from things that I would get rid of things and say “okay now I can go shopping and get 7 things” then I started spending more on quality items and now it’s high stress to get rid of things because I love everything which is exactly what you want. To keep what you love and to STOP shopping

For me, taking digital pictures of "unused & not being enjoyed" sentimental items was a wonderful way to let go of them! Now, I can visit that item any time I want w/o pulling out a box. As well, I asked for a blessing upon the next owner. ♡

My whole family has pretty much switched to food gifts since once you get established most new stuff either becomes clutter or causes existing stuff to become clutter, while food gifts are fun, used up, and don't require worry about who kept/liked/hated/respects etc the gift and what to do with it if you don't use or like it.

I was going to Australia for 5 months and we agreed on 2 suitcases per person. This include Christmas, new years, and a side trip to NZ. Challenging! While packing, I’d pull out something (of the correct season) and think…nah…maybe…or yes! Then it occurred to me: if I don’t want it for 5 months, why keep it at all??? Came home me to a much emptier closet! 😊

This is such a clever idea as a mental concept as well as a literal one! "If i were going away from home for an entire season and could only bring two suitcases, would I want this piece of clothing with me?"

For most of my life, I never vacationed, I always said, why go to "X" and have a "memory" when I can have "Y" that I can touch. Years later, I had so much CRAP that I never used and yearned to visit Hawaii, Europe, etc... After stopping buying stuff, I had the money to travel! Europe is awesome, the Bahamas amazing, tons of great locations at home in the USA. I travel, travel, travel because I have the money and I am a more interesting person as a consequence. People literally seek me out and "live through me", it is nice being the person at work, lunch and parties that everyone wants to talk to and I get invited to places by people because they want me around to hear my stories. LOVING having less stuff!

Been watching you for a while, and you're honestly the only minimalism (or intentional living(?)) related channel I need. Your advice is always so grounded in reality, and your openness about your own experiences and struggles makes you so relatable and trustworthy. I'm so happy that you share your tips with us. Whenever I want to declutter, I remember your advice, and I feel like it helps me not make mistakes both with keeping too many items, or getting rid of too much (which might lead to more clutter down the line, with replacing etc...). I like that you don't advocate getting rid of everything that you don't immediately love ("sparks joy"), but encourage storing and such. All in all, thanks a ton for sharing your experiences and knowledge!

I have 2-parts wish list. “Nice to have” and “need now/soon”. For example, I have one Mascara and when I start scratching the sides, it goes to wish list but with high priority. But new lipstick that I wanted to try was on a wishlist for over a year, because there were things with higher priority. I do this because I am a high earner, and could buy whatever I wish immediately. But I was not “born this rich” and I do not think would be healthy for me to just buy buy buy because I can. That is not a mindset I want to teach my son.

Making decluttering a habit is a big game changer. I decluttered and thought I'd done 😂😂😂. When I decluttered more, I initially felt a bit down about it, but now I see that it needs to be a constant in all areas. Thanks for sharing your recent move and the compact storage you have. My mom taught me this over time as I started working as a teen. I’m now a little older and I am thankful for everything she’s taught me in organizing and shopping. I go shopping when I need or want something but not impulsively. Like the other day, I went shopping and spent over $100 but, I saved for it. I saved and had enough to buy another want/need of mine. I still need to get rid of some old clothing now that I think about it, but I’m so proud of myself for knowing to save for something like this.

Every other video I watched on this topic never really resonated with me because I could sense that those people don’t really like fashion like I do and it never really mattered to them in the way it matters to me. I was feeling so torn because I didn’t want to give up on this part of myself. When it comes to donating, where it's going is important too! I like to either give items personally someone or if I don't know someone who wants it, I'll donate to a non-profit organization instead something like a goodwill. I feel much better knowing that it's either going to go to someone who needs it for free or at a very low price from a place that is actually trying to make a difference in the community!
@rottenghost

Yes it’s really important ! In my area (in Germany) luckily our local biggest second hand store is part of a city card system poor people get with which they can get things for half the price (still it’s quite cheap either way) but it makes me feel good about donating there

What’s the matter with Goodwill?
@elliemae9884
@elliemae9884 6 ай бұрын
@@JK-vc7ie if that’s all you have around you that’s fine. but in my opinion it’s much better to donate to local non profit charities or locally owned thrift shops. goodwill is overcrowded with products that they sell at a high price, and they severely overwork and underpay their employees. it’s just better to support your local economy and community by going through other things than goodwill of you can :)
@JK-vc7ie
@JK-vc7ie 6 ай бұрын
@@elliemae9884 False. Goodwill is nonprofit. They pay the employees minimum wage or higher for low level work and most of them are troubled people that would have a hard time getting a job. Goodwill is in my community so if you donate them you are supporting you local economy in many ways. Lastly, their prices are not high. Everything you said was wrong. Why are you so misinformed?
@elliemae9884
@elliemae9884 6 ай бұрын
@@JK-vc7ie yo chill lol. i never said they were for profit first of all. and second, i said it’s FINE if you only have a goodwill in your community, it’s just that there are better places to donate to if you have the choice. for example, there’s a shop near me that is non profit and is ran entirely on volunteers, and they give loads of goods away for free to people in need. try see if there are any other thrift shops or organizations in your area and look into how they operate. thirdly, goodwill employees do a lot of hard labor. and just because those people may be unable to work elsewhere, that doesn’t mean they don’t deserve a better wage and working conditions. again. if you only have goodwill near you that’s okay to donate there. i’m just saying if you have a better option then consider choosing that instead :)

Oh yes, the clutter catcher. I have an old shopper hanging on a hook behind my outerwear so it's out of sight. Getting rid of 7 items in july thanks to this approach. Decluttered 2 lower quality sweatshirts that i never reach for anyway because i like wearing my actually nice ones and some "just in case" items that didn't get used in 3 years.

Lmao ‘you don’t put things away & you leave doors open’ …. My husband says that too esp bout the doors! 😅 Letting go is really hard and lately I’ve been decluttering & nesting! These videos inspire me to let go easier. Thanks!

Christina 😂. My husband is the same. I saw a story saying “there’s people who can’t relax when dishes are in the sink, and there’s people who don’t notice the dishes in the sink” - they marry each other

The wish list thing is so true! Around birthdays, Christmas, etc. I’ll purge my list before sending the link to family. I always laugh at what’s in there. Do I really need this brand-name pan? Am I ever going to use a sleep mask? And don’t even get me started on the lists I’ve made for my kids!

I am exactly the same - drawers and doors open, stuff just left - I used to think I just ended up with uptight men but my ADHD diagnosis late in life made me realise I’m normal for an ADHDer and so not alone, thankfully 😂

I tried out Tru Earth a few years ago, but it gave me contact dermatitis. I'm using Dropps now and am very satisfied! As someone with a dust mite allergy (read: endless laundry, not-so-eco-friendly doctor's orders to use hot water) who lives in an apartment, I'm so envious of your in-unit W/D! Congrats on the new place. Love the emphasis on curation and focusing on reducing inflow to reduce outflow. It's not clothing-related, but I bought Less Litter stainless steel boxes for my cats so I'd stop generating litter-related plastic waste, and I brought food that they'd rejected to a local cat rescue recently so it wasn't languishing in my apartment just in case they suddenly decided they didn't hate it. There are so many ways to pay forward with things we aren't going to use and to reduce waste!
