I import an adult human model and make sure it's around 1,60m-1,80m tall to ensure that my scale looks fine, always use a reference with correct scale, something you can compare it to

as someone making tiny things, (like, my characters are 5 inches tall, standing on a tabletop) this tip kinda falls apart and I regret adhering to it. it makes hair particles behave unpredictably and it makes things like displacement and procedural materials very difficult to work with. proceed with caution. if going small.
