My dad always told me my taste in music was terrible and that nothing I liked would still be being listened to in 50 years.

Excellent choice but I would put Free Hand by Gentle Giant ahead of Octopus and the live Cook by PFM instead of Per un Amico. The same goes for Genesis, Foxtrot and Nursery Crime are, in my opinion better than Selling. The first ELP is also the best. After, it seems to me they stretched themselves thin. Hemispheres by Rush is superior to Moving Pictures as a real prof-rock album. Hot Rats by Zappa should be there as well Oxygen by Jean Michel Jarre.

I'm 66 years old. To our parents, back in the seventies, any music we listened to (whether it was progressive rock or "regular" rock) was just noise. In fact, they did the same as their parents did, when they were listening to Ch. Trenet (I'm French) or jazz in their youth. They reproduced the same intolerance. They didn't have the key, the code, to understand the music we loved. It didn't respond to their sensibilities. I tried not to do the same with my daughters, I listened to rap, Beyonce,... I remained open-minded. I hate sectarianism.

I saw all of the big Prog bands and many of those that should have been just as big, Gentle Giant being the obvious one in that category, but also Greenslade, Camel, Curved Air, Renaissance, Focus, Banco del Mutuo Soccorso, Nektar, Van Der Graaf Generator etc etc. Italian prog was particularly good. It's wonderfull to see PFM in this list. Being from the Netherlands I got to know this band in 1974. Not all albums were available overhere, but I did find Photos of ghosts, The world became the world and Live in USA back then. Fortunatly my parents found the first two Italian albums while having a vacation in Milan in 1975 and even there they had to search in many record shops! 😊 I can agree with many of the albums mentioned here. But being a Genesis-fan since 1972 it's hard for me to choose between Foxtrot, Selling England and the Lamb... The same goes for Yes: The Yes-Album, Fragile, Close to the edge, Tales...?? Gentle Giant? Octopus, In a glass house, the Power and the glory... Pink Floyd: Dark side of the moon, Wish you were here, Atom heart mother (very underrated!!), Meddle??? Ouch, it's kill your darlings, Sophie's Choice or whatever.... 😊 And then we have Camel (The Snowgoose !!), Refugee, Greenslade, to mention just a few. Yep, the 70s were a great time for what we called symphonic rock then. Late 70s my musical taste changed more to new wave, shorter songs etc. yet, I keep playing the albums I mentionend here!! Rush is the only band I never actually listened to, their music never appealed to me.

For me, a "kid" born in 1961, Deep Purple's 1970 "Deep Purple In Rock" was the pivotal album that marked the demarcation between soft-rock and the more heavy rock. The end of "flower power" and acts like "Country Joe" or "Canned Heat". No more soft, pussyfooting but hard, clear-cut rok. Black Sabbath had a go at ir but it was still heavy blues. Led Zeppeling, the same. Blues, heavy as it may be, was still the same standards as Cream. But Deep Purple with "Deep Purple In Rock" broke the mold. They showed how rock should be played. "Speed King", "Blood Sucker", "Child In Time", "Flight Of The Rat" and "Hard Lovin' Man" all stand the test of time and are today still showcases of what rock should sound like: uncumpromised, un-pretencious and raw. Pure, unadulturated guitars and vocals. The Sabs or the Zepps had nothing against this. Sure, they had, with their second albums, being Led Zep II and Paranoid. But Deep Purple In Rock was still there. Not to be avoided. The stumbling bmock yjay made Led Zeppelin make Led Zep III, a semi acoustic album. Turned black Sabath in trying bettter with Master Of Reality. And they failed. Because Deep Purple In Rock was the epitome in Hard Rock in those days. History would like us to look back differently, but we, who witnessed those days, we know better.
@davidwargin94334 сағат бұрын
I only have two Deep Purple LPs and "In Rock" is one of them. "Child in Time" is really something. Ian Gillian really nailed the vocals on that one. Other great rockers on it as well.

lend an ear to "Kyrie Eleyson" from Austria: a completely underrated band almost noone has ever heard of... unfortunately... or from Germany: Eloy - Dawn, Grobschnitt - Rockpommel's Land, Novalis - Banished Bridge, Triumvirat - Spartacus, Hölderlin - Hölderlin (1975)... or from Sweden: Bo Hanson - Lord of the Rings... however, if you want to include more familiar names: Moody Blues - Days of Future Passed, Supertramp - Crime of the Century, Alan Parsons Project - Tales of Mystery and Imagination, Camel - The Snow Goose, Pavlov's Dog - Pampered Menial, Beggar's Opera - Waters of Change...

Good evening my friend 3 months ago I sent a list (my first list of 20 bands) after you published yours. After relistening I removed Hawkwind and replaced it by Finch. The hardest part was to select just one album. Here we go: 01 Gong - You O2 Supersister - To The Highest Bidder 03 King Crimson - Epitaph 04 The Tubes - What Do You Want From Live 05 Soft Machine - Third 06 10CC - Sheet Music O7 Frumpy - Frumpy 2 08 Gentle Giant - Octopus 09 Focus - Moving Waves 10 Finch - Glory Of The Inner Force I love to know your opinion about my number 10. They are so great but unknown to the audience. Word Famous only in Progrock NL. Have a great weekend and I am looking forward for your list in 42 hours from now.

Hello, my friend! It's been a long time since I listened to Glory of the Inner Force, but just remembering it makes me think about how amazing the keyboards are and how melodic and intense the guitar is. It's an album that I really enjoy! I think it's a great idea to play it again. Your playlist is amazing, full of classics, and it's great to see Finch, Gong and Frumpy getting the recognition they deserve. I hope you enjoy this video, Cheers!

Can't really fault your choices. We can all quibble about what represents the 'best' for each artist (although for the purposes of this list I doubt if there is much coherent argument to be made against the inclusion of DSOTM, Close to the Edge, and Thick as a Brick). My subsitutes would be: Tarkus for Brain Salad Surgery, The Power and the Glory for Octopus. What's missing? I Echo the comments about the Moody Blues for historical significance and also think there should have been a place for the electronic sub-genre - take your pick from Phaedra, Zeit or Rubicon by Tangerine Dream. Left out could have been Gentle Giant and PFM perhaps. For part 2: those above which missed out plus as others mention Renaiisance and VDG to which I would add Camel and Marillion and either Mahavishnu or Return to Forever for the jazz/fusion sub-genre. Post 1990 prog derserves it's own seperate lists.

No album from whatever genre is "essential". In the sense that, we (being the public, or the idiots watching this channel) all have different taste. I myself have found some of your lists quite enjoyable, there's no way my mind will get blown by any list you can come-up with. I grew-up with bands like Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, Uriah Heep, Led Zeppelin, Yes, Jethro Tull, Genesis and some such. Later, acts like UFO, Hawkwind, Scorpions, Triumph, Rush, joined the space underneath my skull-top. Then came the artillery with Iron Maiden, Anthrax, Metallica, Metal Church. My preference are still Jethro Tull. Yes. Van Der Graaf Generator. Later came Symphony X, because I like the more heavy bands. Porcupine Tree, Riverside, SymphonyX (again), Opeth, Dark Tranquillity. What I would call "the good stuff". I subscribed thanks to the previous video I saw on yer channel, something about the 10 "best" prog bands, or some such. I liked that video, and so, here we are again. Cheerio lad. Warm greetings from Belgium.
