As a 14 year old boy I heard A Louse is not a Home by Peter Hammill for the first time. It was played in full length on some German radio station late at night. At the time for me everything was about screaming guitars and there was no guitar at all in that song. It was that voice that grapped me deep inside, also the bass, sax and drums that go together so well. For me it was the beginning of a deep love for VDGG and PH that lasts for almost 50 years now. My pick for the second part is Annie Haslam from Renaissance. Another band I can enjoy for hours and hours without getting tired (they also had very little electric guitar in their entire catalogue)

Your list inspired me to make my ranking. I missed our women in your list and I noticed no attention for Dutch bands. We have so many great bands but the focus is on USA, England, Ireland. But FOCUS is Dutch my friend. Here we go: 01 Thijs van Leer Focus 02 Jerney Kaagman Earth and Fire 03 Simone Simons Epica 04 Daevid Allen Gong 05 Floor Jansen After Forever & Nightwish 06 Kerry Minnaer Gentle Giant 07 Mike Patton Faith No More 08 Michel van Dijk Alquin 09 Kaz Lux Brainbox 10 Eric Burdon The Animals

Couldn't agree more with Thijs van Leer. The bizarre thing is that Focus didn't really have a singer, yet he must have had a greater vocal range than almost anyone on the planet. He used his voice more as an instrument than as a singer.

Definitely the voices you highlighted were quite distinct and perfectly balanced for the bands they played with. However, one stands out to me. Greg Lakes voice was smooth and deep. He could go from hard rock; Knifes Edge, KarnEvil 9, Jerusalem, and etc, to beautiful songs like “Closer To Believing “, Take a Pebble, From the Beginning, Still you Turn Me On. The other guys didn’t quite match his range. IMHO of course.

If there is a part 2 of this video I hope you'll include Steve Hogarth of Marillion, since Fish has already been featured. Marillion first came on my radar with the album "Marbles" in 2004 and I've followed them ever since. In time they grew to be my 2nd favorite band right after my beloved Pink Floyd. For a lot of fans like me who got on the Marillion train in the 90s, 2000s or even more recently, It's Hogarth and not Fish who is the unmistakable voice of Marillion. I did give those early albums with Fish a try, but other than a few great songs Ive never really liked them as much as what came later with H.

Regarding Marillion, could you please include Steve Hogarth in the next video, the singer that has been with them now for over 30 years? It's Hogarth who has been with the band on some of their most experimental and artistic work. Early 80s Marillion with Fish may have sold more units, but they were highly derivative of early-Genesis, which even some of the band members will now admit. This is a countdown of vocalists, and as someone who has had some public singing experience (though it was in Church music, not prog-rock) I will say that Hogarth is a far more talented, versatile, accurate, and original-sounding vocalist than Fish. Some of the live clips of Fish here sound atrocious! It's like he's doing cartoon voices, and some of it has barely any melody to it, just shouting & shrieking & pitch wandering all over the place. Compare this to just a single performance of Hogarth's, like the epic "Ocean Cloud", where he takes his voice through several different tones & vocal techniques, from deep & soulful, to heavy & aggressive, to some ethereal, clean-voiced melodicism and even a bit of falsetto - and he does it all while holding a steady pitch. Fish would pass out trying to sing that full song because of all the breath control it requires. There's a reason that Hogarth has placed as the number 1 vocalist in Prog Magazine's readers poll at least twice. I hope you can give Mr. Hogarth some props in a follow-up video.

Excellent choices! Annie Haslam, Justin Hayward, and Gary Brooker are prog legends. They could be in Part 2! Thanks for commenting and Happy New Year!
Bernardo Lanzetti is amazing! The energy he brought to PFM and Acqua Fragile is unmatched. We’ll consider him for a possible Part 2! Have a great 2025! 🎉

I would have to put in Derek Shulman instead of Fish, anyday.

Derek Shulman is a great choice! He has an incredible vocal presence, especially in Gentle Giant. Maybe he could be in Part 2! Thanks for the comment and Happy New Year!

I mention Derek above. Someone also brought up Minnear, who sings quite well, but Derek had the vocal fire in that band. And yeah, Derek stole a lot of stage moves from Ian Anderson, but hell, they were great moves...

Phil Collins

Great reminder! Phil Collins brought a new identity to Genesis and deserves recognition. We’ll consider him for Part 2. Happy New Year!

Genesis was a pop band after Gabriel left. Phil was a magnificent drummer, and a good vocalist, but there were units to sell, and he sold 'em. Banks is famously quoted as saying, "Hey, the checks don't bounce".

Annie Haslam e Richard Sinclair al posto di Geddy Lee e Demetrio Stratos ( fantastico, numero uno, ma gli Area non sono Prog) e siamo d'accordo in tutto.
@BackingTrackCenter2 күн бұрын
Annie Haslam e Richard Sinclair sono grandi cantanti, probabilmente appariranno nella Parte 2. Per quanto riguarda gli Area, la discussione su cosa sia il prog è sempre controversa. Buon Anno!

Check out new bands, there are great voices like Esteban Navarro from Cheeto's Magazine and Romy Owerkerk from Golden Caves

Roger Rodinson do. SUPERTRAMP. Uma Banda Subestimada quando se fala de Rock Progressivo.

Concordo, Supertramp é subestimada quando se fala de prog. Roger Hodgson é um nome que certamente será considerado. Obrigado por assistir e Feliz Ano Novo!

Roger Hodgson????

Absolutely, Roger Hodgson is a name that always comes up in these discussions. We’ll consider him for a future video! Thanks for commenting and watching the video.

Haven't watched this yet. Bet Arthur Brown isn't on the list.

I'd swap Derek Shulman for the Italian guy who I'd never heard of...

I get your choice! Derek Shulman is a legend in Gentle Giant, but Demetrio Stratos’ contribution is undeniable. We’ll balance that in Part 2. Happy New Year!

Swap Geddy Lee for John Lawton…

I understand your preference, but Geddy Lee has such a significant impact on Rush and Progressive Rock. Still, John Lawton could definitely be in Part 2. Happy New Year!

No Steve Walsh of Kansas? No Annie Haslam of Renaissance? Ian Anderson has a unique delivery, but I can't call him a "great vocalist". Phil Collins needs to be included. Genesis didn't end in 1975.
