Writing this script was a huge undertaking, but I enjoyed every step of it. Overall I think the 19th century is incredibly underrated due to being stuck between the Napoleonic wars and WW1 on top of being filled with interesting cultural moments, for which it is now mostly remembered. In reality this was the most transformative era for mankind since... the agricultural revolution? Humanity stumbled as it started to give up on slavery, monarchy and the spear, while embracing capitalism, industrialization and globalism. This was an explosive era, which was always going to come with a lot of collateral damage and I did my best to give you a glimpse of it via 10 notable milestones. This is only a taste and I personally can't wait to try out Victoria and dive in, exploring all the nuances of technological innovation, immigration, espionage, culture and so much more! If you have any questions, simply reply to this message and I would be happy to reply to them as best as I can. Enjoy!

Eras stuck in between major conflicts such as the interwar period of the 20th century and the post Napoleonic 19th century are criminally overlooked. These were the times when humanity tried to heal themselves and cope with the previous disasters, and came up with brilliant new ideas that changed the course of history - for better or worse. It's like taking rest after a few days of workout. That's the time when your muscle's gonna grow to fit the stronger person you've become, just as the marginal eras advance us into more modern ideas and practices.

@flyingorange4493

Is it underrated? I feel like it gets a lot of attention from tv and movies, and some things from it are very well known like the clothing, Sherlock Holmes, Jack the Ripper, the architecture, A Christmas Carol, the art, literature, inventions, etc. The majority of the 'wild west' period of American history was during the Victorian era as well (something I didn't really think about until I watched Penny Dreadful). I agree that besides the American Civil War, other conflicts from the era deserve more attention.
@alucard347

I'd argue that the 13th century is the most underrated century. That's the time when Genghis Khan conquered half the known world and set in motion events that redefined history to this day, and yet people don't really think about this period too much.

Slight mistake at 13:36 - The restorationist faction weren't fighting against the samurai, Most Samurai sided with The Emperor and initially the Restorationist forces were the more conservative/reactionary faction. Also, both sides used a mixture of western and medieval weapons and had support/were supplied by Europeans - the Idea that the samurai thought it was dishonorable to fight with guns and cannon is a myth. It was only after the Meiji Emperor continued modernization/westernization when the Samurai revolted in the Satsuma rebellion.

Great video and I'm subscribed to your channel and love your videos - but I have one minor nitpick. the Boshin War and Satsuma rebellion featured both sides using modern technology and gunpowder weapons...it wasn't like sword wielding samurai were on one side. In fact there were "samurai" i.e. people from the samurai class on both sides. Both sides also bought weapons from European powers and had European advisors. Japanese people weren't idiots, they knew gunpowder weapons were superior and had been using them as a major part of their army for hundreds of years at that point. One case I'm aware of in the Battle of Shiroyama the forces of Saigo Takamori used a sword charge cause they had run out of ammo for their guns. The idea of sword wielding samurai comes from Total War games and Tom Cruise film "Last Samurai," both are great but not historically accurate.

Despite being underrated as per mentioned, Victorian era has always been my favorite subject for history. Eventhough its considered as an era of decline for most asian civilization including my own country whereby our ancestors were left far behind in terms of technological advancement driven by the European industrial revolution. But some events in our area almost sparked a revolution that could lead to our nations to be on par with the european just like japan did during meiji restoration, only it didnt fully happened. Very interesting era i must say. From feudalism to modern era.

Well written script and great animation. I believe that the Victorian Era was time of innovation and tragedy. For example China has become stage of tragedy due to Western innovations, Japan switched to tragedy giving side by same ones. BTW Meiji wars weren't battle between Western style army and samurai, but battle in which both sides deployed cavalry and gun corps. So it could be said that proxy war between Britain behind royalists, and France supported shogunate. After all, it was the Victorian era!

It is quite sad. Sadly, for most of history mining operations were so absolutely horrific with their conditions, and no real way to improve it, that people were forced into borderline slavery at best to keep them working. Mining Operations are also a big part of what pushed slavery all across the Ancient world for instance, because of the absurdly high death rates.

I recently heard that California was involved in the Civil War. Like most Americans, including Californians today, I thought they were too far away. But there was a California Brigade serving in the Pennsylvania Militia and I guess that's why Pennsylvanians named a town in their state, California. But more to the point here. San Franciscans learned of the Battle of Ft. Sumter a week after it happened -- when the Pony Express brought the news. They learned of the assassination of Lincoln the next morning because the transcontinental telegraph was built during the war.
@dvwjr79
@dvwjr79 Жыл бұрын
Actually, there were no California organized troops serving in the eastern Union Armies. Californians pooled money and asked Oregon Senator Edward Baker to head east and raise a brigade in the name of California. In April 1861, Senator Baker was commissioned by Abraham Lincoln to raise a California brigade in Philadelphia. So the California Brigade serving with the Union Army of the Potomac was recruited from Pennsylvania using California money. After the battle death of Senator Baker, in October 1861 - the state of Pennsylvania reclaimed the California Brigade as the Philadelphia Brigade which served with the AoP through Cold Harbor in 1864.

If i may, during the Boshin War the Shogunate Army was a standing professional and modernised army like that of the Imperial alliegance. Even in the subsequent Sastuma's rebellion they didn't use swords and armors anymore ;) Hoping i've been useful, best regards Nicolò

On many maps in this video you showed the city of Zagreb as part of the Ottoman Empire. Zagreb (and Croatia) were part of Austria-Hungary.

Didn’t some Dev told us in stream that the 19th century was one of the most peaceful era’s when justifying changing the micromanaging of units during warfare?

Yes and it is true in a sense, there were fewer great power conflicts (wars between the most powerful countries) in Europe compared to earlier eras. However there was quite a lot of war other than that, including colonial wars so the dev’s argument is pretty weak

Need to start the next one with the 1884 Berlin Conference and the ensuing scramble for Africa. Heck, just do ten main events in Imperialism.

A video on that Berlin conference. Where Bismarck had issues and the power balance was set up for failure would be welcome. I didn't know about that specific incident at all. While I expect the complexity and depth of contention involved in the conference are high. A look at this would be very welcome. I keep remembering Bismarck saying that "some fool thing" in the Balkans would kick off the next war. After hearing about the berlin conference I am left wondering if that statement has some links to this general situation and the instability it created. While the Balkans are still the crossroads and spark point. I am left wondering with better management could the power keg of Europe have been starved of sparks a little longer? Honestly this treaty from the above description has echos of the treaty of Versailles at the end of WW1 in that it helped set the stage of how / where the next war would arise. Not to anything like the same magnitude but the seeds seem to have been planted.

According to certain politicians it was a wonderful utopian age where nothing bad ever really happened.

A lot more good than bad happened in that era. A far greater century when compared the one coming after it.
