@@friedsam29 Hi James. Welcome to WFPB living! I've lost another 12 pounds since writing my initial comment 5 months ago and began losing weight almost a year ago. Be patient and kind with yourself as you move thru your own weight loss journey; it's not a quick fix but a complete lifestyle reboot. I pretty much eat a hybrid of Dr McDougall's and Dr. Esselstyn's protocols. I eat zero processed foods, so no flours, salt, oil, sugar, and alcohol. Most of my meals are built around potatoes or sweet potatoes with my plate being 50% starch (potato, beans, grains) and 50% non-starchy veg. I eat until I'm satiated and this was a feeling that I needed to rediscover. I have found creating a community of others who are also WFPB to be the most supportive. Derek's channel and the folks in the comments are one of the pieces of my community. All the best, James.

Always useful information and enjoyable to watch. I'm not a vegan - I follow a whole-food plant-based diet, basically a subset of the vegan diet - and so I much prefer tempeh to tofu (because tofu is highly processed, whereas tempeh is not; also, tofu is less nutritious as soybeans (edamame, for example), and soybeans are less nutritious then tempeh (since with tempeh you get both the beans the mycelium of the fungus). The drawback is that commercial tempeh is not all that good, so you get the most benefit if you grow your own, which I've been doing for a while now. One big benefit of growing your own is that you can make your own combinations. I tend to like a pulse and a grain (black beans and black rice, for example) but I also have made a pulse and a legume (chickpea and peanut; and also black-eyed pea and peanut). Luckily, you can easily find beans/lentils and grain (intact whole grain), and those are inexpensive, and making a batch does take much time at all, and then after 3-4 days of fermentation the tempeh is ready. You might give it a try. Like tofu, tempeh works well with marinades, but tempeh also has its own very nice taste - nutty and a bit chewy. It works extremely well in stir-fries, stews, chilis, and curries. The Facebook group Tempeh Makers is a good place to ask questions, see what others are doing, and find out where to get starter culture, and so on.

I am a chemist and this whole GMO-thing gets misunderstood so often which just freaks me out, here's the facts: A plant, let's take corn, growing wildly may or may not contain certain compounds that cause allergies or do damage to you in general. The probability it doesn't (for any humanbeing consuming it like rare side effects on a drug) is very low. If you wanna do GMO you gotta do a ton of research, toxilogy, in vitro and in vivo experiments and clinical trials that take ages, mostly over ten years and if it turns out to not do damage to anybody on a large scale you will eventually be allowed to grow it. Given how many people on this earth are dying because they don't get enough food it is our moral and should be our legal obligation to not have a problem with GMO. After all, the probability that it does harm to you is lower than with "natural" plants.
@flow44583 жыл бұрын
@@amazingone1234 GMO and organic don't always go together and it's not true to believe that every non-organic food is too high in toxines. It often depends on how the food gets sprayed, also not every insecticide is toxic (or as toxic as others), sometimes (mostly) when people worry about toxines it is actually not even possible for your body to metabolise them in a harmful way or (more often, like with PTFE for example) the compound is too stable to even react with anything. All I'm trying to say is: If it makes you worry less and you wanna be a 100% sure that nothing critical happens with your system due to pesticides, go buy organic. But to be honest: In most cases it makes sense to actually check on whether there's a reason to be worried (I'm not saying there never is). Also, I was just talking about why it makes no sense to worry about GMO as GMO and not as potentially too high in pesticides, cause that's what most people don't even care about when it's about genetically modified stuff. Hope my explanation was clear...

Thanks for the list, Derek! I do have to say one thing. People with metabolic disorders (blood sugar issues - insulin resistance or diabetes) like myself should probably not be eating potatoes, because they are high glycemic and they can cause a surge in insulin production. It's not just calories in/calories out. Hormones like insulin (aka the fat storage hormone) matter, too. I love potatoes, but I only have them as an occasional treat, because they do cause me to gain weight. Otherwise, I have to follow a low glycemic diet, in order to keep things from getting out-of-control and to avoid getting full-blown diabetes. My point is, please don't assume that all of your viewers have a healthy metabolism, because that's not true.

I have that lemon tahini dressing 4-5 days a week. Changed up my salad game 100%

Love your list. All basics for me as well. I would add mushrooms. I have them just about every day. From Portablello steaks to the "meaty" addition to all my concoctions, they are a go to for me.

For my list, the top 3 things are: 1. Sweet Potatoes (usually 2 or 3 types per day) 2. Avocado (1 small one a day) 3. Bananas (6-10 a day if you include all the different types. Every day I usually have 4 Cavendish Bananas, 2 Saba Bananas and 1 or 2 Plantains. And often also some of those little finger bananas too) I don’t think I’ve gone a day without any of these three things in 20 years (sweet potatoes only 10 years since I went vegan).

Wow ... North American jars of produce (peanut butter) are ENORMOUS!! I don’t think I’ve seen a jar that big outside of US/Canada.

I gotta have tumeric, coriander, chilis. Garam masala, cumin, mustard seed, ginger, garlic, and onion. I cook a lot of vegan Indian food. Oh and cauliflower is a must.
