A genuine masterpiece in every meaning. I remember being like 8 years old and emailing Sony every few days asking if they were making a sequel yet. They must have gotten 60+ of those emails from me. As well as at least a couple emails asking if I could have the rights to make a sequel myself, since obviously they weren't interested in doing it. 😂

I liked this game so much that I would fail attacks on purpose to find the exact enemy HP and made my own bestiary. Something unique about LoD is how the common enemy tactics change when they reach 1/2 HP. Most games seem to only have enemy behaviour change for boss battles and optional bosses.

Lost Odessey was one of the best RPGs on the 360, and there were a few great 360 only RPGs that were overshadowed by Final Fantasy on the Playstation
@ronnycook35696 ай бұрын
When the 360 came out there was a small rush of JRPG releases in a Microsoft bid to get entry into the Japanese market, which then dried up almost completely. About the only 360 JRPGs after the first year or so were the FF13 series. This was partly because the 360's use of DVDs rather than Blu-Ray drastically limited game size - nobody ever mentions Lost Odyssey came on 2-3 DVDs (and as a result was a late arrival to the XB1's emulation support.)

The Dreamcast launched in the U.S. on November 27, 1998 and was discontinued on March 31, 2001, 2 years and 4 months later. A list about forgotten masterpieces, yet once again Suikoden doesn't get any love. Suikoden was one of the first franchises to feature save importing, all the way back on the original Playstation. It's a game that featured 108 playable characters, featured wartime combat, had positioning in your party play a factor on how your team performed, featured a 6-person party system, and allowed you to build up your own base to take on the might of the Empire, of which you were the heir to. Characters die, and there is genuine weight for your choices. Despite all that, it's sequel, Suikoden II is EVEN MORE revered, and at the peak of it's cult classic status, had physical copies selling for over $500 USD. For all the talk people have about Chrono Trigger being a great game, having played both Suikoden and Chrono Trigger on the Playstation as a kid, and later as an adult on the PSP and PC respectively, Suikoden is the better game, unironically, IMHO, and is a game that deserves VASTLY more love than it gets. Hopefully when the Suikoden I & II Remaster finally drops, people will finally be talking about these games the way they deserve.

You had me straight off the bat with FF12 but then you brought up Lost Odyssey a proper hidden gem of a JRPG man 👍🏻 Problem is I always remember the sex pest mage Jansen though! 🤦🏻♂️ I mean shamefully I laughed it off as a kid but now looking back 'Oh God!'

Knights Inn the dreams with a game that I absolutely loved, it is definitely one that needs a re-release

The only slight I could put on Perfect Dark was the visuals. You can tell they were just a little too ambitious for the N64 so they get the blurriness that Goldeneye didn't have

We all have opinions, of course, but I am a graphics lover and most of these are best left in the past for me, except for the last one. Perhaps the success of Baldur's Gate 3 will spur someone to completely update Planescape Torment. That would be an instant classic. I'm too old to initiate a major project or I would do it myself.

To this day, I consider Planescape Torment one of the best RPGs of all time. Right up there with Baldur's Gate 3.

Anachronox. If you haven't played it, imagine a Final Fantasy style turn based RPG set in a tongue-in-cheek satirical sci-fi universe (think Hitchhiker's Guide meets Red Dwarf meets Guardians of the Galaxy)

You can't really compare a visual novel like 999 to adventure games. They're a completely different medium. Visual novels are designed to have twists and turns in the story as you choose your character's actions. Some VNs have puzzles, but many don't. It's like comparing Doom 3 to Borderlands just because you shoot things.

I've played several of the games on this list already... Skies of Arcadia still stands in my memory as the best JRPG I've ever played, and arguably in the top-3 of games, period! And while it took me some time to get really into it, Planescape Torment is indeed a masterpiece. I almost turned off the video after the first entry, though. Final Fantasy XII? A 'masterpiece'? A travesty, is what it is - and an ill omen of future despair. Maybe I'm biased, but that's what FF12 has always looked like to me. I used to be a huge fan of the series, starting with 7 - like many others - but then using emulators to go back and play the first six, finding great joy in 5 and 6 in particular. I loved 8 even when many complained about how 'emo' Squall was, I loved 9 even when others complained about the cartoony art-style, I loved 10 even when others... well, actually, that one was pretty well received overall, being the most polished and engaging adaption of the series' signature Active Time Battle system. But I loved FFX-2 too, even when others were protesting the very IDEA of a 'direct sequel', or mocking the 'dress-up' element, since it provided a modernized and genuinely beautiful modern-day adaption of the Job System that I'd loved so much in Final Fantasy 3 and 5... Then FFXI came out. And it was an MMO. Just... a flat-out MMO. I guess some people liked it? But others, like me, tried our best to ignore it, hoping that Squaresoft would get it out of their system and go back to making great, narrative-driven, turn-based JRPGs with fun characters and amusing minigames! Aaaand then FF12 came out. The battle-system was unrecognizable, seemingly more inspired by their recent adventures into MMO's than the finely-polished systems of FFX. All the familiar faces, in terms of monsters and summons, were missing. The progression-system was just weird. It felt more like a single-player MMO than it did a Final Fantasy game. It became the first Final Fantasy game I put down without finishing it, and the death-knell of the series as a whole - for with every additional entry, it seemed the developers were doubling down. More fast-paced, more linear, more focus on graphics over substance! To this day, FFX-2 still stands to me as 'the last good one', and FFXII as the herald of doom. Well, unless you count World of Final Fantasy, which nobody DOES because nobody knows it exists - now THAT is a real hidden masterpiece!
