From what I know, the story about the hacker was a bit different: He took the bait, was about to leave his house, when German authorities came by and stopped him. They told him the American authorities contacted them and if he had gotten on the plane, he would have had to stand trial in the U.S.A, where things probably wouldn't have turned out towards his favor. In Germany then he only got probation.

Gotta remember that this is the guy who, when he heard about Counter Strike and looked into, didn't get annoyed or pissed off about someone making a mod of his game. No, he found out who made it, told them it was cool and gave them jobs. That is just awesome.

He is also the person who: Found people at University that made a little game for their exams in which the player must solve puzzles by using portals and hired them on the spot to make this game as a small team at Valve Saw a Modding-Team which made a very popular mod in Quake named Team Fortress and then hired them to make an iteration of it in Source (Valves engine) He was also the person who found the mod team behind a Multiplayer Mod named Dota for World of Warcraft 3 and hired them to make Dota two with Valves Tools ... Basically over half the games Valve made where originally by modders and I think for good reason as Modders can have the most creative ideas: Because almost everybody can make mods and because they don't have to bother with creating a full game but only the specific mechanic they think is great. (PS: It was probably not Gabe directly who found all these projects but he was willing to look at them and listen to the creators and finally made the decision to employ them at his company)

I thought it was interesting to know about Gabe Newell since the only games I've played on the computer were Solitaire and Sonic Spinball. I've never even heard about Steam until a few years ago when people talked about it since I've mostly played Nintendo consoles my entire life and I knew a lot about the people behind Nintendo after watching the Nintendo Directs when I was in college at the time. There were even some documentaries about gaming but none of them mentioned Gabe Newell, at least not yet. It is interesting that he was the only game person when it came to one of the richest people in the United States. I don't know what it says about us really but it's nice to see one person on there because it is becoming more and more mainstream in the United States.
