i agreed with you until you said Burzum and Mayhem. Burzum is a f*ing hype and doesn't deserve all the attention he gets. Most of his albums aren't even remotely BM. As for Mayhem, the band should have ended with Euronymous. He was the heart of it. Mayhem without him makes no sense. It would have been legendary and deserving of a position in the top 3. But they wanted to keep going and ruined the legacy. Now they're just a gimmick and people go to see them only because of their past glory.

Shaun Martin to a casual listener like myself the whole genre seems to owe its success to Mayhem. In a genre as theatrical as black metal I think the antics outside the musical aspects are important. They were pioneers, interesting characters and they gave the genre the notoriety it still has to this day. Many of the milestones of the early scene are linked to Mayhem, and by running Helvete they facilitated other early artists.

Venom (not a huge fan, but I respect their impact.) 3. Bathory (same as venom) 2. Diagnose: Lebensgefahr (More atmospheric than Black Metal, but it has its attributes.) 1. Silencer (don’t hate me for this, but they represent true melancholy and horror in a very well manner.) Honorable Mentions: Mayhem, Darkthrone. (Not a big fan of both, just they made a huge impact.)

Dissection was the best, Bathory was the first , Immortal is the heaviest , Darkthrone was the roughest, Mayhem definitely had the most interesting history , but Dissection is far superior to any Black Metal that was or shall ever be . They were absolutely awesome and if it weren’t for the fact that they didn’t produce much material, (only one album that I’m aware of) I would absolutely have them close to the top of this list also. Atillas vocals with Tormentor were far superior to anything he’s done with Mayhem imo.
