I have major social anxiety and I am also anti-social, but, hearing you say that I should "pretend" to like things, has made me view things differently now. I know this has nothing to do with VRChat but hearing that and actually pretending to like things that I disliked before has made me actually like them instead of pretending to like them. I just want to say, thank you! If it wasn't for this video, I would've still had a negative view on things, you deserve more subscribers!!

Go to karaoke or open-mic events, that's literally made for that. Those groups are usually welcoming of newcomers. You may not be able to go o the stage the first time if the session is fully planned, but you can spend that time talking with the staff if you're interested in joining the next time around. As for karaoke worlds it's just "anyone who dares to step forward and play a song" usually, it's pretty chill. xD

About the gun thing: your idea probably backfired because many crashers use guns. They aim at you, fire, you crash. Most people end up hiding others as soon as a gun is pointed at them (I've done this, and I know so far all of them were crashers because they were visibly upset about me still existing)

@@cid_vrc Wow I didn't think you'd see this under a 9 month old video! Serious dedication my friend :) But yea, it's true. Personally I find avatars with guns pretty funny, but my vrchat friend group is more chaotic anyways. But if I see a stranger pointing a gun at me, especially if they're new or visitor, I hide their avatar as soon as I can to avoid crashing. Most of them time this happens I can see the silly default robot do the gesture for pulling the trigger a few times until silently running off to the next person. If they were just messing around they would've reacted different and not run off or look upset.

The main thing I always tell people is to avoid groups and try to find lesser or alone people, no more than 2 together. This is bc most groups have already established who to talk with and there's a good chance they'll kick you out or just ignore you. Usually from my experience the best people tend to be couples that are out exploring worlds, try to find people like that and you'll more than likely make a safe connection. And try to have an open mind! The more things you're into the more you're able to talk about and socialize, whether that be entertainment, fandoms, ect. But know the shit you're talking about and be passionate, not just for the sake of socializing. Some dudes will weed you out real quickly.

felt like these advices were really good not even just for vrchat but for any online platform so decided to write them out as a list for people who find it easier to read them but they are not word to word so you might want to watch the video to see what he said about them too. 1. Compliment something they're showing off since it will probably have meaning to them. 2. Try joining people in activities instead of just talking to take the pressure of socializing off you and them. 3. Roleplay some job in the room to make yourself more approachable to people. 4. Choose an avatar that suits your personal taste instead of your thought from an outside perspective of people. 5. do not troll or try to shock people even for laughs since it would make you seem more intimidating to them and not be able to relax around you. 6. try to show off even the smallest of special traits you have to make people more interested in you. 7. Fake it till you make it, so if you arent outgoing fake like you are just for fun and maybe you will like it. 8. initiate conversation even if people react badly because at least you tried and you will eventually meet someone who wants to talk to you just keep trying again.

I absolutely get where the social anxiety comes from and paralyses you when it comes to trying to even force a social situation. The tips are definitely useful though, and there are those that needed to hear it. I might take that advice one day, but I've used VRChat almost exclusively alone for almost 2 years now after a few people I did hang with, kinda just bailed when better social prospects came along, and I don't hold it against them, but it does absolutely create that "what if", if you ever contemplate being social. Yeah, maybe one day I'll bite the bullet and try, but for now, I sorta just vicariously experience that social prowess through streamers who seem to be experts.

Thank you for explaining about the trolling thing, because if your trying to make a few people laugh then sure. But harassing is not ok. Going up to a person and using bad language and telling them to Kill themselves is NOT cool. I honestly hate the glorification of that in the raps and songs kids listen too or even the media. Not even kids, even adults your actions can reflect on others. Personally Ik that since I have experienced it. I didn’t go on vr chat for two months cus of it. It may not sound long but that experience still is remembered and scares me. If what you do affects another in such a way. Stop. It’s not too late.
@fallencrusader2975
@fallencrusader2975 2 жыл бұрын
Trolling for laughs is a great way to make friends, you just have to be good at reading the crowd and you must know your demographic. Otherwise people will find you annoying and begin to hate you, even though your intentions are pure. However as a basic rule of thumb for someone trying to make friends its best not to troll. Its high risk high reward, only worth it if you already have some friends.
@renookami4651

@@fallencrusader2975 Not really high reward, especially if your joke isn't as original as you think and it's the 10th time this session someone approach them the same way. Trolling is better inside the friend group where people already knows eachother's brand of humor. ^^"

This list of tips you made is really, really good. I've been on VRChat for about a year and a half now, I can say that I stumbled upon most of these tips by myself. I used to be one of those people that was really awkward and didn't know how to show interest or make people interested in me for a long time. Now I'm the one that can crash into an huddle of people that are nothing like me and have fun with them, or drag the quiet people over and make them have fun. I'll tell you what was the most important thing to learn: The biggest thing stopping you from having fun and being fun is being married to the idea that you must avoid feeling awkward/vulnerable and avoid making others feel that way, too. It's not going to happen overnight, but you really have to keep doing things that make you feel vulnerable over and over until you get comfortable with being uncomfortable. It's so much easier to do in VRChat than it is in real life for a lot of reasons. Also don't forget that 90% of the people you run into are just as awkward and self-conscious as you are. Have some sympathy for that, since you know how it feels, and you've got something in common with just about everyone.

Thanks, ever since I have had some shit trolls bother me on vr chat by harassing me telling me to kill my self because I am gay has really made me loose trust in people and learning to like humanity. But this helps me make some more friends, your right servers like black cats are just full of trolls ect and just too pushy and confident individuals. I honestly kinda like my own space but now I have friends that respect that and because of them I’m now more confident with communication even tho is still have to pretend to be confident. I’m surprised how many people listen to what I have to say on vr. You have no idea how much I needed this little boost of confidence. On the 5th one, I think that this makes more sense than some of the others! Avis are a large part of who you are in Vrchat and being able to express that without being scared to is great! I think the only problem is people judge to quickly. As of me joining one of my favorite worlds I was wearing an SML avatar as I'm entering that kinda phase at a rather old age, I said nothing. I sat there just watching. And I got vote kicked. I could hear ppl in the background "Oh yeah that's an SML avi they are gonna raid us or something" When I have no close ppl to even help me do something like that. I wish people wouldn't just judge by and avatar but still its a good and great part of who you are in VRC and one of the greatest perks of VRC, Being able to be whoever you want to (Most of the time)

I have barely any experience in VRC but when I played it i loved it. When you’re playing the game when shy and just looking to have fun, it may take a while of room hopping, but VRC is perfect for that too.

If you already have a buddy or two who play, it becomes way easier to approach people in a more populated server, or often you find people approach you and your friend(s), I tend to hang out with chill people, so often meet others who turn up and end up getting on well with us. However, in VRC's case, I have no IRL friends who play, so had to make my own way at first to meet some other players. Best part of VRC is there's no pressure. If you don't like someone you can move on and chances are you'll never meet again, and if someone's being a problem but you want to stay because of the other people, you can block or hide them. Now they simply don't exist in your game anymore! It's important to remember, especially when first starting off! I agree with all the tips here, but the one that stands out from my personal experience when you're on your own is doing an activity. It holds true in many other social games like Second Life or an MMO. Finding games and activities, or hopping worlds and exploring with people is a great icebreaker with someone you don't necessarily know well. I've unintentionally made friends just through playing/exploring with them (depending on which game) way more often than actively trying to approach people in social areas like a town or chill map (again, depending on the game) Hasn't often worked out to me as a fairly introverted person, unless. Of course, the latter can work but doing something interesting rather than just standing and chatting helps break the ice with strangers for sure! Hang in some game worlds or other interactive places (no time two talk is good also) and if you click with someone, give them an add. Once you got a few buddies, it gets a lot easier! Also to add to the point about complimenting people's avatar, I love all the fun gimmicks people make for their avatars and love to see them shown off. If someone's put the time and effort (or money) into making something they're usually more than happy to demonstrate, also a great way to strike up a conversation!

Lol exactly. Just be crazy and weird and people will actually come to you. But also respect people's boundaries. I was in a public today and this Brazilian guy kept getting in people's faces and being rude. That's the wrong way to be funny.

hi! i just joined vrchat a not even 3 days ago, and i have huge social anxiety issues. after watching this video, i felt immediately encouraged to hop on vrchat and i just walked up to some people who also seemed to be looking for somebody else to talk to and now i'm friends with them! this video helped a ton, and it defenitely has helped to ease my anxiety at least. so i just want to thank you for making this video, because i've honestly havent seen advice like this in such a long time! :D

6:13 Man... I can see why you thought it'd be funny, but at the same time, I can think of so many reasons why it wasn't a good idea. Imagine someone have been mugged in real life, they might have been shot and have PTSD! I'm glad you realized it wasn't a good idea before it turned into a serious problem and now give advice based on your experiences on VR.

I'm quite shy and introverted when it comes to socializing. But, I tried getting out of my comfort zone and boost up my confidence by talking to people. It really helped me a lot. The main problem for me now is language barriers. I'm Asian, so English is not my main language. I had a hard time keeping up converstaions with people, eventhough I can still understand what they're trying to talk about. If they're talking too fast, I kept on asking them to repeat for me and I'm scared that they might thought of me as a nuisance 😩 Some of them just don't wanna interact with us Asians cuz they thought we are weird (I know not everyone think that way, just some that I've heard). Some of them are very nice and friendly too, and I will eventually stick with that kind of people ☺️

So okay with the tips you gave though the avatar tip i'm not really okay, it doesn't have to be a girl. I'm a guy and made my own avatar on VROID, pretty easy as i'm just learning. It looks like me and has custom clothes like mine but i still am able to help people when they're not doing fine, chill with people, have fun and entertain people. I'd say : find an avatar that corresponds to your personality, your mood. I'm a chill guy, open minded so i keep my avatars for those moments. When i do my Arnold voice impressions or Yoda etc i change avatar accordingly and it adds a lot to my VR character/personality ;)

Another tip! If you are a new HBT dancer, it is a high recommendation to go to worlds that have music or people that plays music out loud for others. FBT dancers loves to give tips to new dancers, including half bodys! But take note that most, of not all FBT and HBT dance veterans feel comfortable around 18+ people so that is a note to remember! There is also some people that buys/make their avatars for a specific song or dance and get giddy when someone compliments us! 💙

Dancers are usually really cool people. When I visit dance worlds while exploring and accidentally join a public instance where there's people, I was told more than once "I don't care if your avatar don't move because you're in Desktop, just dance with us in your room!" it's so akward yet funny! xD

Personally I’d find the gun thing funny. But absurdity is or atleast was a really big part of my sense of humor. Always liked a little spice and made a lot of friends with it. If people don’t like it they usually just block you so if you’re someone who wants friends of the many things an absurd sense of humor can mean, it’s not exactly a bad thing to try. I’ve made a lot of people laugh back in the day, only reason I’m here is because I’ve learned against one of my main absurd pieces of my sense of humor because of my realization of what it ends up doing to one of my main values and so I’m trying to figure out a new way to make friends as my other parts of my sense of humor are far too underdeveloped in social ways for me to use them in its place. But don’t be too afraid to be yourself. I will also give the advice that, there will always be someone whose going to like you, if you’re like me, it may be more rare but if you keep trying and not let the failed attempts get in your way of thinking, you’ll find some friends. Not sure if that’s covered in the video, I impulsively came to comment this lmao. But things like that do work, but it may be arougher ride on your way to making friends so if you’re worried about that, keep that in mind.

Even the my home instance is set to public by default so I just immediately go into my happy zone I’ve met quite a few nice people this way and it’s been fun helping people break out of their shells more. I've been sitting up this evening, wanting to find someone to, well, just talk to... I'd love to play a game of chess or something, but none of my friends had the chance, or whatever. nothing "bad" in any way. But I had a deep urge to just talk to someone. I have not entered VRChat EVER... (Have seen some humorous KZbin videos. That's all). Luckily I have a VR, and know of it's possibillities, and VR HAS to be a way to meet someone. So right at this moment, my thoughts are: "Will my mic work properly? Will it be set up good enough for someone to just hear me?" and I'm absolutely not going to "engage" in the start. So... That's why I came across this video. Since I need to know what the hell I'm getting into. Maybe this will change, but I'll say what I feel about your tips: #1: That was a durh... But did indeed made me realize that theres gonna be WAY customizable avatars, and I should pay attention to it. Good tip. #2: This one I would have fallen into. I still don't know what it looks like, but I've always liked "non crowded places". Good tip. #3: This is just true in general. I want to show off my creativity and also want to play games. I can also make friends by talking, but have to REALLY talk a lot to get into something. Good tip, but this was a "given" for me. #4: Eeehhh.... I can't dare to do that. I'll freak out from a negative response and never try it again. But I get your point, and DO like to roleplay. I'll say it needs to be expanded upon. #5: It's a really good tip, but I'd like using that guy avatar you showed. That's who I feel more like.. So it felt really offputting when YOU said "it wasn't right". I think I understand it wasn't right for _you_, but still. Good tip. #(seven)6.. Yeah you said seven.. But "Don't be offensive" is the most given to me. If this tip needs to be given to someone, I think there's more they need to address than just getting tips. Good you put it on the list, but it should be a given. #7: No... I don't like the first words "Be different". Be yourself. You gotta be yourself. There is ALWAYS something interesting in EVERYONE, so there is no need to "be special". Bad tip. #8: This one is a very balancing on the edge of bad/good. But you explain it well. IRL vs VR etc. But this wasn't really "needed" since it goes tip #3. Feels a bit "filler". #9: That's the issue I can't come past right now. It's as if "I don't understand discord" well enough to do it "properly". So why combine that with the GREAT things you said in this tip? Going to events, appearing at schedules. That's great. But what does discord have to do with that? Switch the tip name from "Join a discord" to "Participate in events". I personally have had discord since it came out, and have all my IRL friends there to play games with, but have never ever met someone new there. #10: Have no idea if I even can. Dunno if my mic works. Dunno when people can hear me. Dunno anything... I'll TRY and talk, sure, but I definetly will not be initializing anything from the start since I have no clue what I'm doing. Sure, I'll try, but there are times one feels like not initializing, and other times one does. So this tip seems to be just "irrelevant". Wow,,, that went WAY longer than I thought. Still charging my Quest 2, and gonna go in as soon as it has a charge. (Why, oh WHY does it not charge from the computer..... I like using the cable link into steam... But after the last update it doesn't even charge when connected, it actually DRAWS power...) That was 10 min of writing while waiting for my quest to charge. Feedback for you Cid, and my thoughts. Guess in about 10 more min, I'll enter VRChat for the first time ever.

Good video but one piece of advice I can give is don’t “fake it till you make it”. My Sensei always taught me not to fake it till I make it, but fake it till you BECOME it. If you’re not confident then act like someone who is confident and react how they might act until you are more comfortable with acting with confidence

You have some fantastic advice and ice-breakers here, especially wrt how to find folks with the same interests. When it comes to Vrchat its not so much about making friends its about making bonds as in making a friend is the easy part actually creating a bond with them like how you would with a friend in real life is 10x harder if you have so many people added on your friendslist making things a cluttered mess and causing you to potentially forget the said person you are wanting to bond with favorite tabs can kinda helo with this but I'd recommend just keeping you list slim enough depending on you as a person if your forgetful I'd recommend keeping it small
