I feel like ERP is perfectly valid as long as you keep it private. Don't go disturbing others with it and you're basically all good. For people in LDR's it can be a valid way of just doing stuff with their partner and that's fine by me
@TheDapperSaint3 жыл бұрын
This seems to be the general opinion from most people in VRchat. Anyone who ERPS tends to do it in specific areas or in ways that don't disturbs the public. Most of the clubs involved in erp tend to be private underground clubs like the ones I explored outside of the video for research reasons. It's really interesting and makes a lot of sense as, just like in real life, you don't want to see in the corner of your eye someone doing the dirty while you are just having lunch with some friends!

This was genuinely really interesting! While the mutes / underage folks issue is VERY much something to keep in mind, I for one think ERP is a net good, being able to express oneself in such a way with appropriate company in whatever body you want to inhabit - i.e. whatever role you wish to play - is such a fantastic thing we're able to do and it was great to see it honestly discussed here without making too huge a joke out of it or demonizing those who do or would like to take part in it.
@TheDapperSaint3 жыл бұрын
I'm happy to hear that you thought it was so interesting, also glad to hear your take. When it originally making this video, I wanted to make sure to stay pretty neutral as this is a big part of a lot of people's lives and to make a joke out of it would be unfair to them. Either way, so glad you enjoyed and I hope to make more content for you in the future ☺️
@FiltyIncognito3 жыл бұрын
'Net' good isn't a good decision metric for many things. For example, using some made up numbers, let's say that for every 100 consenting adults that get their nut on there is one kid being taken advantage of, you're basically saying that it's fine to sacrifice one kid to sexual predators so that 100 people can get their nut on. The numbers are just made up, but regardless of the ratio you're still agreeing to sacrificing kids to predators in exchange for sex. There's all kinds of such dicey situations when it comes to evaluating things based on 'the greater good', and the reason you should be personally concerned is because if 'the greater good' was used like you mentioned for decision making, the next time you go to the hospital for some minor thing you might suddenly find your organs being forcefully donated to save the lives of many others.....or just one person who makes more money or is more impactful to society than you.
@TheDapperSaint3 жыл бұрын
@@FiltyIncognito It truly is a shame that predators will always be a problem. However, I think one thing to keep in mind is that the root of this issue goes way past ERP and is a problem at virtual reality's core, taking away the physical aspect of ones identity. It's a really interesting topic that I find myself thinking about quite a bit as there really isn't at this time a way to solve the issue.
@storebrandchocopops80413 жыл бұрын
@@FiltyIncognito That's a very good point actually! I didn't mean to invalidate the experience of those who have suffered as a result of ERP, it's disgusting that younger folks have been taken advantage of through it, my intention was more to highlight that the act itself among consenting adults - the "appropriate company" I mentioned in my initial post - shouldn't be automatically demonized and it was nice to see this documentary approach it more objectively. Thank you for opening my eyes to why "net good" is a harmful way of putting it.
@FiltyIncognito3 жыл бұрын
@@TheDapperSaint Aye. It is quite interesting. But to be clear, I'm not stating an opinion one way or the other about VR or VRC. It's a very weighty, complicated issue that I'm not willing to tackle. I'm just pointing out something dangerous that some people might be accidentally/unwittingly saying. Many people often use the 'greater good' argument not realizing the implications because of the emotional distance between the 'sacrificed' and the benefiting masses, so I try to help people understand. And to clarify, I'm not shitting on people who don't understand it on their own. There's a ton of traps, biases and other human tendencies that cause us to make all kinds of bad decisions....because that's just how we're built. It takes some really smart people to carefully examine and think about things to get around our natural failings. I just happened to have a deep interest in philosophy while growing up and went out of my way to learn all kinds of cooky things that most people normally wouldn't.

Wow there’s a lot of confusion in these comments about phantom touch. Phantom touch is *real* but the technical term is “Tactile Hallucination” and it doesn’t happen to everyone. Tactile Hallucination is a result of your sensory inputs failing to correctly communicate with the somatosensory cortex, and are common in people with neurodivergent traits, and in amputees (the shock of having lost an entire limb will often cause tactile hallucination). One of the most common neurodivergent traits that presents itself in people who experience tactile hallucinations is Restless Leg Syndrome (a syndrome which causes your legs to feel itchy, painful, etc and forces the person to move their legs) There have been several studies done, most of which have been able to replicate the feeling of tactile hallucinations on the forehead using virtual objects, but were only able to do so when the person wearing the headset believed the object would have collided with them in such a way that would be painful. So yes, “Phantom Touch” is real, and it’s even able to be purposefully replicate for the sake of testing. I hope this helps some people out with their confusion

Phantom touch is like remembering things from a blackout. Your mind creates something that makes sense from what it knows. I ran around a fire to reach someone who feel in from a safe distance, turns out I actually jumped into the damn fire. My brain took the before and after memories to decide what happened during the missing moment. Phantom sense is the same. It takes what you're seeing and tries to fill in the blanks the best it can. That's why people say they can feel something, but it doesn't feel like what it would feel like in reality. Their mind is filling in the blanks, but it isn't sure exactly how to do it.

While I have yet to participate in VRChat, I've done more than a little ERP online, and I really enjoy it as a fun way to roleplay, to have a good time, and to make others feel good as well. I suspect that as more people participate in virtual sex in whatever form, the more the stigmas and taboos around sexuality, sexual orientations, gender, etc. are going to fade to whatever degree. I doubt we'll ever be completely free of sexism, homophobia, sex negativity, etc., but I suspect that such topics will gradually lose most of their "forbidden" aspect because of cybersex in its many forms. I also know that having played males, females, and even futanari, I've learned a lot not only about my own sexual preferences, but also what people of the opposite gender go through at different times, both good and bad, and it's been something of an eye-opener for me. Having been on the receiving end of unwanted sexual advances, for example, have made me more sensitive to how I flirt with other people and more aware of how I can easily come on too strong, but to my credit I try not to get too obnoxious and will quickly back off and apologize if someone tells me I'm getting too close to them in whatever fashion. ERP and cyberflirting have also helped me come out of my shell, at least online; IRL I'm very socially awkward, and being able to flirt and be playful in a safe space have helped me learn how to be flirty and frisky without placing myself at risk for anything worse than being muted or even banned temporarily, whereas (unfortunately) flirting with the wrong person can get you raped, beaten, or even killed, which definitely makes it hard to practice a valuable skill in interacting with others in a healthy sexual manner.

Well said. Sadly issues involves sexism, homophobia, etc, will always be around due to human nature. People will always try to find a reason to treat people differently. 😕 On a side note, I'm really happy that the world of erp has been beneficial when it comes to better understanding yourself 😊

@@wrenchisnotanerd People can do both, it isn't like you're locked into one path and that's it. you're making it seem like anyone who does this kind of thing instantly loses all grasps on reality. @TheDapperSaint3 жыл бұрын
@@aspicio it's something that is hard to understand until you get into it or have it happen to you. Even I myself have had phantom touch before despite never partaking in erp. My best way to explain it to someone who hasn't done VR before is think back to a time where you felt a sensation due to something that couldn't actually affect you, like the crawling feeling of a bug due to a roach or something that you saw or that sense of dread accompanied by an immersive horror game. These situations can provoke a reaction on a psychological level that causes you to almost feel bugs crawling around you, or that something is actually breathing down your neck despite nothing being there. Phantom touch essentially effects that same area of your brain and induces the feeling or presence of something you actually can't feel. This is due to your brain filling in the gaps as all you are missing is that sense of touch. The human brain is known to do crazy things like this all the time, like one of those grey photos with lines of color in it, yet without looking closer, your brain fills in those areas full of color despite it actually being grey. I know that im not the best at explaining it, but I hope that that kind of made sense!

I've felt phantom touch way back even b4 vr chat got off by doing that plastic hand experiment in highschool but holly shit did it feel so much more powerful once I experienced it in this game. My avatar was a small roll of toilet paper, and as I was walking around mirror mutes, a group of them motioned me to sit in the middle of the pile on their laps. It felt so sureal. Thing is, I don't even have a virtual headset, as i'm only on m+kb. Imagine how way more crazy it would have felt if i had a headset.

I have really strong phantom touch even though I have only half body tracking and have only had vr for a short while. This was an incredible analysis of erp culture! Seriously, you're right about the tech involved. If I were to tell my younger self that this would exist at the quality and popularity it embodies, I wouldn't believe it. I also believe that phantom feels are totally a real thing, I've felt it quite often. Though, will say it was much more potent when I first started using VR. I suspect that because your eyes see people and places that do not line up with reality, it interprets VR as real. Like, outside of erp, I was standing on a dock in outerspace and got vertigo and a sudden fear of falling. Even if it wasn't actually there. Anyways, I'm eager to watch how the tech evolves over time and how it shapes social and cultural practices in the many communities that call VR home and their fellow VRers (??) familty.
