Justin, the reviews for Olaplex are very bad. I was surprised to read them. The reviews speak of hair loss and thinning. Is that true?
@justinhickox Жыл бұрын
@@narcismebelgie great question. The only part of the Olaplex system I’ve ever recommended was 1-3. That was because it was the only product for a long time that had the ability to regrow the disulfide bonds in hair. The rest of the line, I’m not a fan of. Now there’s another product called K-18 that I haven’t had as much experience with but stylists I trust SWEAR by.

I'm proud that I knew all 10 of these and have been actively practicing habits to avoid all of them. I am 67 years old. A few years ago, I began growing my hair out from a super short (less than 1") pixie. As it grew it out, I discovered that the hair I thought was straight is actually very wavy, indeed curly. That discovery resulted in me dramatically changing my hair habits: 1) washing generally only once, but never more than twice, per week; 2) no blow drying, except maybe some quick diffusing on medium-heat with my head turned upside down -- but never doing any blow drying with a brush; 3) rarely using either a flat iron or hot brush to straighten it -- choosing to let its curly flag fly; and 4) even though for decades I had not colored my medium brunette (with just a few thin strands of silver and lots of natural auburn highlights) hair with anything other than semi-permanent color 2-3 times per year, deciding a year ago to stop coloring altogether. I eventually grew my hair past the middle of my back, with some layers for body and movement and a U-shape bottom line in the back. It was pretty, but I felt that at such a long length, it wasn't necessarily flattering my 67 y.o. face. So, a week ago, my stylist and I agreed on cutting it to just a bit longer than shoulder length with face-framing layers and just a bit of a few other layers, while keeping the clean U-shape on the bottom. I absolutely LOVE the result!!! And with the help of my protocol of what seems to be the right proportions of heat protectant/detangler, leave-in conditioner, curling cream and oil to keep it styled, shiny and healthy, my long, curly, abeit aging, hair now looks better than ever.

Do you think you could video record the next time you go to get your hair trimmed so I can see if I can find a stylist who can follow it and maybe do that for me?
@susanpharr6809 Жыл бұрын
Awwww…..I recently cut @ 4” off my long hair ends, with a delicate and slight trim to strands around the face. It is more manageable, but it was nice to let it grow very long again - since my 30’s. I wash my hair 1X per week - or in winter - I go longer - using a dry shampoo. Lately I am using a new long hair shampoo, conditioner / leave in conditioner for frizz control. Makes my natural waves pretty. I like to have enough ‘fullness’ and movement, so I am wary of leave in conditioners. Silver strands all @ the hairline, otherwise my hair is still shades of light to medium brown. I pull it back - into a loose bun (?) often with a cloth scrunchie - uh oh - as I work with small children. 74 and still working & paying the mortgage! My grandmother had very long hair with brown strands well into her eighties! So there is hope. I would love to let my hair down more often, but life and work practicalities curtail this. I take a biotin supplement, and I notice the difference when I stop for a while. I’ve learned that rosemary (in oil or other ) massaged into the scalp can be beneficial for hair growth. Hm…I may try that too!

When my hair was short I washed it everyday which was literally necessary to style it. Plus I got it cut frequently so it was healthy. After growing it out into a below chin bob, I shampoo every 3 to 4 days. At first it looked terrible the 2nd day, but your scalp adjusts and doesn’t produce as much oil when you wash less frequently. Saves me so much time and product too! Justin, due to your earlier video demonstrating how to properly hold the blow dryer pointed down the shaft, I have changed my ways. My hair is far less frizzy and my natural wave has lovely body. I don’t need to rely on any iron to tame it, only occasionally use a curling iron to change up the look. Thank you!

During "stay at home" I thought would have been the time to train my hair by washing only every few days. But I cannot stand feeling grimey so during that extra stressful time washing every day was still a stress reliever. I now realized I didn't have any reason to go anywhere this weekend and could have given it a try.

So glad you mentioned the natural oils - I thought he was going to say that. Washing too frequently our scalps try to compensate by making more oil... I have a cousin who doesn't shampoo ever anymore (I know! Wow) and within a few weeks her scalp adjusted and her hair looks pretty normal, I gotta say. More lank than the average shampooer but definitely not oily looking at all. Not for me, I'm a once a week light shampooer, but great for her. Interesting how these shampoo industries promote damaging recommendations just to sell more product (like lather, rinse, repeat BS). 😉

In my teens and early 20s, I had very long hair (I often sat on it). It was really wavy and after a day of school, the area between my shoulders and wherever the back of a chair trapped it, my hair was straighter... It also had breakage in my shoulder area. Friction of any kind is a potential hair enemy... I also stopped putting my now past-my-shoulders hair up in a heavy bath towel turban and that's helped with the breakage at the hairline. Rounding the corner for 67, it's time to give my hair every advantage. Great video and help to all of us out here! Thanks Justin!

I’ve been doing all of these things for several years now- I started during COVID-19- my income decreased and along with it- my spending! First thing to go was my hairdryer. It died and I didn’t want to spend money to get a new one. Ditto for my flat iron and curling iron. I’m so glad that I kinda happened on what works best for my hair. I was able to grow my usually skimpy, shoulder length hair into a long and naturally wavy look without effort when I stopped fighting my hair!

Great info. Luckily, I don't do many of these, except for not washing my hairbrushes as often as I should. Thank you for that reminder. Excellent info! And validating. I'm relieved that I'm aware of all of these! I've even started wearing a silky sleep cap at night to reduce the nape tangles I get from my silky pillows (better than cotton for my hair). I use the big fat no metal hair bands, minimally shampoo about once a week at the scalp, gently use a smooth hair wrap towel after showering, air dry my hair, and don't brush or touch it much (curls). My room for improvement is remembering to wear it up more so it's out of the way/safer/protected during my active day and in improving it's texture as I age (since I don't color it very often, demi permanent when I do). Thanks Justin. 💜

Another wonderfully informative (and entertaining) video. Unfortunately, I don't wash my brushes as often as I should. (Working on that.) And, when my hair was long I could go with more days between shampoos (maybe just wash the front/bangs area). Now that my hair is short, I prefer to wash every other day due to my exercise regimen and to get the pollen out of my hair and keep it out of my bed! Also, having short hair means I can let it air dry and maybe just blow dry the front to style the direction for better and longer lasting results. I also bought 2 sets of satin pillow cases about a year ago. That has been incredibly helpful in taming frizzy hair and guarding against tugging and pulling while I am asleep!

To the question about perms and color together, I never did it, but I do remember my 80's perm. I got a 2-for-1! The result of my natural level 7 blonde hair was a platinum curl fest! Thank you so much, your information is always so helpful. I often wonder if you get tired of the same ole questions??? But here goes. Im 63, and have a color treated Bob just past my chin, it’s really hard to keep it looking fresh without washing it often. I will try adding messy curls to it to get an extra day, but in the end 3 days is max. With warm weather approaching add in the sweating et…how do you combat that without washing? I would love ideas. I try REALLY hard to not condition the roots, but there isn’t much to work with! I’m always looking for a good shampoo and conditioner, and styling products without sulphates, alcohol and added chemical. I would love for you to share the best styling products to use for after washing. I’m sure there isn’t just one certain product, but “how many “ products should one use? I use a heat protector cream, and an oil ( dry hair), it seems to work ok…but if I use a curling iron, or straightening iron, both set at 360, out comes the friz….and that brings me full circle to dull style that only seems to be fixed by washing….💁🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️
@justinhickox Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! I appreciate that a ton. Every three days is actually a good amount of time. It’s shampooing every day. That’s the larger concern. If you’re getting three days, you should be good. As for the sweating, have you tried dry shampoo? That would be a solid option for you. When it comes to how many products you should use, it’s a tough answer. It really depends on your styling process and what you’re wanting to achieve. With that said, a leave in conditioner is always great. If you’re using an oil, I would consider a heat protector instead. Oils can actually have a tendency to amplify the heat damage. You have to think of it like adding oil to a hot pan when you’re cooking. For the flat iron, I would actually recommend going hotter with the flat iron. The reason you’re seeing frizz is because the lower temperature doesn’t have the ability to lock in your style as well. Going hotter with it, closer to 400° for instants, Sounds much more damaging but in reality it isn’t. The style will last for a longer period of time, and it will require less passes with the fluttering to achieve. If you use a heat protectant prior to using the iron, you should be in good shape. I hope this all helps. As for shampoo and conditioner, I really like the Hairstory that I recommended in the video.

I knew them all and use them also (mostly). Since my hair is pretty long I always put it up, because those straps (if it is a strap from a top or a bag) will damage it, and up I tend to play less with my hair. My one struggle is if it hanging loose, I don't intent to but somehow always am toughing my hair, no idea why... And I hate putting extra's in my hair, I have very fine hair and putting too much in it ends up making it feeling gritty and grindy, I love the feeling of soft flowing hair. Due to my illness (I have several auto-immune diseases, oa Lupus and Hashimoto) my hair has a mind of its own. One day it is super straight and smooth and the next it is almost curly, I can feel in my hair if my medication is too low or too high, sigh... And due to the same diseases it is sometimes greasy very soon. Some periods I can do 4-5 days between washing and the next it is 2 days... It used to be 7-10 days between washing, before the bloody thyroid. And I cannot use a normal conditioner, it makes my hair dull, flat and greasy. But what works for me is using conditioner before washing (just the ends of course) and then washing the roots, the excess conditioner is washed out, my hair is conditioned but does not hang flat. Or use a bit of hair-oil in just the tips! And I sleep with a silk pillowcase, I wake up without needing to comb it for tangles, just a bit the smooth out the roots then.

@justinhickox Жыл бұрын
Great question. Your stylist is correct. Wide tooth combs are more rigid so they can pull too hard on the tangles with little to no give. Wet brush bristles have some give so they tend to not rip at the hair as much.

I’m still growing it out so that I can get a shoulder length layered cut. I got tired of not being able to just throw my hair up and go on my days off from work. I think I like the blonde as it blends better with my grays. It’s been over a year since I had a keratin to smooth out my waves in the summer humidity we have in New York. What’s the best way to style my hair so that I can use my natural wave in the summer. I have fine aging hair 😂 and now that I’m not doing the keratin it looks a lot less flat but I’m worried about the summer.

I had mid to long hair, which was colored about every two months to cover the grey coming. I requested a perm, so I did not color my hair for over 3 months. My hair history with perms when I was younger, is that it responds to the solution quicker than average. The perm fried my hair, there was no curl or wave at all. This is my regular salon I have been going to for years. I had it trimmed post perm twice at this salon. Stylist would not cut it short as I requested. Still fried. Hair masques, conditioners, nothing would help. I had to set it with pin curls to get any resemblance of waves or curl. I went to a different salon and had about 7” cut off and have been going there about every 4 weeks to have a trim to get off the damaged ends. I would like to have it a little longer but not like before. I am 68. My hair is thinner on the back of my head, which always seems to lay flatter than the rest. I don’t use curling irons, but use small rollers to give it a messy curly look. Do you have any suggestions for a shorter style for me. Will try to attach a post perm and then my hair cut. I don’t want an old lady puffy do. Could not send you a picture of damage hair and new haircut.

Hey Justin great video. I use many of these rules such as only washing maybe 2 days a week, only hitting the scalp area, not rubbing harshly with a towel but rather wrapping in a towel and leaving for a few mins. I also allow my hair to dry 80% or more naturally before I blow dry the rest of the way to avoid so much heat. Here is my question (and I am considering sending in photos for you) I never hear anyone talk about 2 things of which I have both, thyroid hair and the changes after gastric bypass (hair loss and thinning). I have always had very very thick hair that everyone loves. OMG after gastric bypass and despite high biotin doses daily, my hair fell out and thinned a great deal. Now I have lost 86 lbs and am much more healthy now but UGH the hair. I have stupid regrowth everywhere which is good but looks ridiculous and the ends are super thin. I just can't get it to do anything. I even stopped highlighting it during this to minimize damage but we do just color roots because I am otherwise very salt and pepper....white in the front and much darker in the back....not a pretty gray. Any hints, tips, tricks for those of us with thyroid issues and post gastric bypass or weightloss thinning? I've wanted to go shorter for a long time but for so long been told, your too heavy to go short it will make you look fatter......now that I've lost weight I can't get that mantra out of my head. SO how can I style or cut it during the regrowth phase? HELP
@re-ridersuzanne Жыл бұрын
Wish you'd do something about very thick, hairs/square inch. Every stylist has always said that I have 5 people's heads of hair on my head. I ask to have it thinned out. It used to be very straight, but it's gotten wavy underneath as I've aged. I've had it short, bobbed and long. If someone doesn't listen, it looks terrible in most styles. I just want something easy, but nice. I do color, because it's pretty much all gray, which makes it more coarse now.. Just do a video on thick hair please.. I'm not African-American either. I deep condition and don't wash it now every day, but if I'm working outside, I have to. I've also used much more conditioning from mid to ends always and don't use heat much at all.

Justin, what is your opinion about the silk pillowcases?

Hi Justin, ques: what conditioner will give you the most 'slip' in your opinion to make tangles come out easier for fine wavy hair ? 😢

Hi Justin. You have taught me a lot and I thank you. Please could you do a video on hair cut difference in using a razor or shears or both? I recently had my haircut by a stylist who asked me if I minded her using a razor on my hair. What are the pros and cons using a razor to cut hair? Do you use a razor to cut hair as part of the cut? Thanks .

Justin, How can I fix frizzy hair? I live in Florida and it is very humid. I have tried many products to no avail.
@dawnliphard9591 Жыл бұрын
As a rule, I tend to avoid doing most of these. Washing my brush usually once a month because I'm lazy 😆 I do, however, use small elastics. Not rubber bands but silicone(?) I guess. They break easily and just slide out when removing them
@justinhickox Жыл бұрын
Glad to hear you’re avoiding the majority of these! That’s awesome. With the rubber bands, regardless of the material, it’s the surface area that can be the larger concern. That’s a lot of tension on a very small surface area. That’s where I find most of the problem arises from.
@selectiveoutrage6617 Жыл бұрын
@@justinhickox My hair is fine and thin so larger elastics just fall out. The small silicone ones work for me but I only use them to put my hair up when I shower and don't shampoo

Justin, theses are great tips. Can you address the needs of swimmers? I swim almost daily and chlorine has to be washed out.
@justinhickox Жыл бұрын
Thank you! You're not going to like this answer but....a swim cap. Unfortunately that's the only solid answer. Chlorine is SUPER tough on hair. The process would be to rinse your hair, apply a leave in conditioner, throw on the swim cap, then rinse out the conditioner when you get out of the pool.
@shelley37 Жыл бұрын
I’m a swimmer too, and I can’t swim without a swim cap! Mostly because I have long hair and without a cap it flips over my face and suffocates me!!! They also make swim caps for long hair that have more room in them to pile all your hair in.

I really enjoyed this - I am guilty of not washing my brushes! But what do you do when they are boars hair with wooden handles. I don’t think I can throw them in water. I comb them out, but it doesn’t “clean” them. Any suggestions?
@krissy9553 Жыл бұрын
You can mix acv and water and spray that on it and then comb it out

@justinhickox Жыл бұрын
As long as you’re pointing the air down your hair shaft, that’s the main concern. As far as round, brushing your hair, or something of that nature, have you looked into the hot air brushes? It’s a round brush and blow dryer mixed into one unit. I’m actually a big fan of them And it may be a great option for you.

What to do when you really must wash your hair every day? I start my day in the stables and really need a shower and hairwash after that. Only wash with conditioner or what?
@justinhickox Жыл бұрын
Great question. If you can't rinse out the dirt with water, I would find a "gentle" shampoo. Something super lite.

could you PLEASE do a tutorial on how to blow dry a stacked bob.. No matter how hard I try I always seem to get the 'triangle' effect flat on top and too much volume round the bottom. HELP..

I got a horrible short haircut that sort of looks like I have bed head even when I have styled it. 😑 My hair is dry from the bleach my stylist put on a few months ago - still, no matter how much I deep condition. And I must be a rough sleeper because my hair is a crazy mess in the mornings now. Like crazy. Frizzy. Horrid. Soooo I have no choice but to wash my hair every day now, just to tame it down. It's too short to put in a ponytail or wear a hat (it makes me feel like I look boyish!). Ugh.
@justinhickox Жыл бұрын
I’m so sorry to hear that! One option may be wearing a silk scarf over your hair at night while you’re sleeping. It’s not the most awesome thing, but it may help smooth your hair out, as well as hold it down so that it’s more manageable for you. a silk pillowcase may help as well as another option.
@Journeyofthewildflower555 Жыл бұрын
@Justin Hickox I'm pretty sure my stylist has done all of your "no's" to my hair, from coloring to cutting. 😂 I moved to a super small hole-in-the-wall town in a new state, and I am torn on trying someone new because everyone knows everyone here! She had never done a root melt until me, so I have been an experiment for her. Anyway... I do have a silk pillowcase, but maybe I need a better one. I'm open to trying a silk cap, no matter how bad I think I look in it. Haha I'll try anything at this point! Thank you for responding with some advice, I do appreciate it! 🙂

What do you think of telephone cord hair ties? A lot of people say they're less damaging than the elastic type. How do they compare to scrunchies? Scrunchies don't hold my hair. I have a fair amount of slip, though less than when I was younger. Despite the photo, I now have long hair.

Great video! I follow these tips except for the washing schedule. I can only go every other day with my curly hair. I’d like to go longer but my scalp gets itchy, especially the back of my head. I end up irritating my skin by scratching. I’ve tried an assortment of products ending with the same results. Any tips? Thx!
@justinhickox Жыл бұрын
I'm sure you've tried it, but aside from the things I mentioned in this video, have you tried dry shampoo? It would be a great option to use in your nape to help soak up some of the oils.

Is scrunching damaging to the hair? Usually, second and third day, I just spritz with water and scrunch (short to medium hair). Thanks so much!

I have been told by hairdressers that my hair is fine textured but very thick (I have a lot of hair). For a couple of years now, I get a lot of tangles in my medium length hair which I believe is due to the fact that 5 years ago I was on oral chemo for 6 months and it has left my hair badly damaged. Should I cut a lot of the length and if I do this, will my hair grow in healthier? Thanks for all your great videos!
