I moved here from the northeast as well. Shortly after I lost my best friend of 14yrs while walking a trail by a pond. Lester, my Boston Terrier was quickly grabbed under by an alligator. I foolishly ran into the water after him, but it all happened so fast. I wish I knew better. My ignorance cost me my favorite buddy. Be careful around water if you're bringing a pet.

I love the slow pace of SC. It’s such a huge difference from NYC. We New Yorkers are always in a rush. We like to joke and say we need a walking lane just for tourist and another for locals. I’m heading back home tomorrow (sadly) and that’s one thing I’m going to miss. The people here are also friendly, I’ve had plenty of Convos with the neighbors of the AirBNB I rented in little river. My legs are completely bitten by bugs and it doesn’t bother me one bit. When we are not outside doing whatever it is we chose, I’m sitting in the backyard at all hours. I know damn well I’m getting bit by the bugs. But it’s just so peaceful sitting outside and listening to all of the different birds, bugs and frog sounds. Something I can’t really get in NYC. I’m really going to miss this the most about SC. Nice people, nice weather and nice breaks with nature. I’m super happy that we chose to vacation here.

Just a small reminder about the snow and ice - we did have an ice storm here about 7 (?) Years ago that was significant enough to break two limbs off of my tree, and I was thankful to have had a SUV at that time. However, generally speaking, you are absolutely right that it normally doesn't last long. I do recommend keeping a snow shovel to help with picking up yard debris after major storms. We are glad that we did.

What I found weird about living in Myrtle was that you are in a weird little bubble that's hard to explain unless you actually live there. The city only has 30,000 residents and when I lived there, the majority of the police force only worked 4-6 months out of the year. But despite it's lack of residents it has some large buildings, a middle power D-1 sports college (CCU), a House of Blues and holds some 'mid-major' types of events like concerts. All because the population changes so drastically depending on the time of year. But the close major city is Charlotte which is still 3+ hours away. The closest interstate is I-95 which is 90 minutes away. The airport has been scaled back dramatically and it's just not that easy to get to. Your life is extremely laid back and the only commerce is all hospitality related. Even living in Orlando there were other types of commerce than hospitality. It's very different and some people can handle, others cannot.

I like but let's give em the full disclosure. Palmetto or Water Bugs are a thing, a large thing. They're a native bug that is technically a roach, but does NOT spread disease like a german (and similar) cockroach, though they can walk over a dirty surface and spread it like any other insect. They don't really want to be in your house and are often just seeking water in a dry spell. Button your home up good and they'll keep out. I like leaving a door open in nice weather. The horror fades and you just keep a cup and cardboard handy to send em home and avoid a big carpet stain. Oh, and the skeeter is our state bird. Fun fact, Horry neighbors: Illinois is pronounced without the S on the end ;)

I was looking into Loris but they get flooded too much. Hope your property is higher up than surrounding areas. My buddy lived on the Northside of his town and his Harley and car in his garage got flooded for about a week. This was a couple yrs ago though.

This is all a matter of preference. I like to describe our towns like I describe my children. All are unique and have certain things that some Love while others can't stand. At the end of the day, it is all a matter of your personal likes/dislikes as to which you are drawn to.

Little River, Aynor, Sunset Beach NC and if you like fish, Calabash NC and Murrells Inlet SC are the seafood capital of each of the Carolinas. The more north of Myrtle Beach you go, the less crowded it gets. I personally like North Myrtle Beach, Murrells Inlet and Little River. Conway is very crowded and has alot of accidents on the 501.

Myrtle Beach is great when you are on vacation but sucks if you live there, high crime, low wages, traffic I could go on and on, you will not find anyone born there that is still living there
@leasandiford83 жыл бұрын
You will find some people that still live in the area. I have relatives who still live in the area and never left home. However, suitable employment may be the biggest issue after graduating from high school, college, and graduate schools. The culture is different. However, the beaches and resorts are nice weekend, holidays, and off season getaways for people living in South Carolina and out of state. From my understanding, the same families still have control over the Myrtle Beach and surrounding area. Its been like that for a very long time! Being stuck in time, is not so great! Change should be welcoming and great to explore! Change and openness is good for the body, mind, and soul. But even much better when it comes to enhancing the Myrtle Beach and surrounding area in many ways 😀

I was born and raised here so this is basically MY STATE. I don't care where you're from if you're moving to my home. The only thing I ask is if you have any Democratic socialist or communist or liberal views or ideas please leave them where you came from. This is a very conservative state and we like it that way. We like our sweet tea and we like our cornbread and we like our fried catfish and we like are guns and our fireworks and our American celebrations and we love Jesus and God and our familys and if anybody moving here thinks that any of that is bad or that it needs to change then they need to just keep on moving to another state. If you're going to vote for any Democrats or socialist type politicians then we don't need you here and please move somewhere else or just stay up in Yankee country where you came from. If you're moving to my state it's because you want to be a part of my culture. I don't want to be a part of anyone else's culture so you're not ever going to hear me say that I'm excited about retiring and moving up north or moving to California or anywhere else. I love my state and I love it the way it is and I don't need any out of towners or foreigners moving here trying to change my home. Thanks and welcome!

The mayor of Myrtle is an outspoken communist. My biggest surprise moving to SC was that its not really a red state compared to the midwest. Tax dollars in South Carolina go exactly where? They certainly don't maintain the roads...
@Richardzmaxdragway3 жыл бұрын
@@troymash8109 that's exactly what I mean and I say we don't need any more damn Communists here. It's already getting bad enough. My state is overrun with communists. It used to be beautiful but I think in the next 20 or 30 years South Carolina is going to be overrun with foreign crap

@@Richardzmaxdragway Right after I moved here I saw that the head of SCDOT got a 237% pay increase. She weighs about 300 pounds too. I've already replaced control arms and struts on 2 vehicles since moving here from Ohio. The use or more to the point "pocketing" of tax dollars by SC politicians is gross. I love the weather and the scenery though..😂
