Excellent video! Another Olympic sport that used to be: "Pattern Figure Skating:" Through 1968, at least women skaters had to do a sub-event where they skated slowly but precisely to shape particular figures/patterns with their skate scratches in the ice. As a little kid I remember watching Peggy Fleming {Gold medalist to be} doing her required patterns. Maybe the term started from that: 'Figure Skating." I learned: In the rural days of pond skating, {19th century, early 20th} many people skated to outline particular shapes.

@mikemalloy16812 ай бұрын
Well, believe it or not there is a current pistol competition that has duel as part of the venue. It is not very popular now, but still around. It is called International Center Fire Pistol. Caliber has to be between .32 and .38. The first 30 shots are shot in 10 shot strings at a bullseye target that does not move. The next phase is Duel, which is really fun to shoot. The targets are knife edge to the competitor. There is a 7 second pause, the targets turn rapidly towards the shooter and present themselves for 3 seconds, then face away for 7 seconds. During the non shooting segment the person must lower his pistol to a 45 degree angle (un supported) and wait until the target presents itself again for 3 seconds. This goes on for a total of 30 shots. So the total slow fire (30 shots) and the 30 shot Duel give a maximum score of 600, if one shot all bullseye. No one does. I used to shoot in the 560's. They shoot this event at the Pan American Games but not the Olympics. Scores are usually in the 580s. I used to shoot it once a month and it was really fun.

Honestly, competing in a race over a specified time period sounds like an interesting idea in concept. Maybe not 12 hours like the cycling race, but if the time was randomly assigned from say 10 seconds to 10 minutes and the athletes did not know how long they had to compete for, it would make for a really interesting race. You'd have teams picking different athletes based on their abilities and going off of luck (distance athletes of course would be more preferred but you never know because the time could be really short to favour a sprinter). And seeing when athletes crack in trying to guess when the right time will be.
