So pleased to see you include Budgie! Man!! What a band! Right up there with Cream and the 4th member of the unholy trinity of underground rock, along with Purple, Zep and Sabbath. Absolutely on a par with them. So tragic they never got the recognition they so deserved. RIP Burke Shelley just a few short years ago now. I guess radio playlists don’t go in for 20 minute epics with varied tempos and volumes and epic solos. If you’ve never heard of them… go get “Never Turn your back on a Friend”. Absolutely epic and in a par with Machine Head, Vol 4 and I think better than anything Led Zep did.

IMHO The Warning, despite their youth, should always make any list about trios, if we consider the fact that a song has words in it and is not just about instrumentation. Classic rock in 60s & 70s was mainly about connecting with the audience through insightful lyrics backed by appropriate musicianship. What a band was saying & how it was saying it through songwriting was important. Subtlety. Profundity. Intellectualism. Those were the words that defined rock from that era. However, from the mid 80s all that changed as shouting & screaming became synonymous with singing. The show became more important than the substance in a song. Instrumentalism was prioritized as bands experimented more with the sound of their instruments than the depth of their thoughts. Listeners stopped listening to lyrics. It became all about distortion of guitars & voice, heaviness of instrumentation in a song & energy of performance. In today's music scene, the subtle songwriting & profound intellectualism of Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Simon & Garfunkel, J.J. Cale, etc. (even the Beatles, Dire Straits & Pink Floyd) would have struggled. No wonder the spiritualism of the Blues has gone out of fashion over the past 4 decades. The philosophy of less is more has been defenestrated. It is against the above background that The Warning stand out from the crowd. Through their profound metaphorical poetry delivering insightful message that is enunciated with intelligent songwriting together with subtle musicianship. Miles Davis famously said "It's not the notes you play, it's the notes you don't play." This power trio epitomizes his thoughts.
