I would love to see a video on design rules (ideas) for non-conventional areas like very tall ceilings with beam work and how to hang artwork, window treatments, floral arrangements, etc. I have 10' tall walls with beams in my bathroom and artwork looks odd low (eye level). Is there a rule of thumb for non-standard heights and rooms?

My hand is cramping because I had to take out my design notebook for this one. WOW! What a wealth of knowledge and ideas you shared in this video. You always get my brain firing with ways I can improve my space. I think my two favorite rules were “establish a focal point” and “pay attention to sight lines.” I have southern sun exposure in my living room and recently put some antique and hand blown glass pieces on the window sill. They are so pretty, and I think they provide an element of surprise-especially on sunny days. Thanks you so much for these wonderful videos. Ashley, you are a treasure!❤❤❤

Love it. ❤ Can you please do a video on choosing great photography for art? I’m not into oil or old paintings and abstract art which is what most designers go for and only mention photography but don’t really show great pieces in rooms. I take out tech, cars, powerlines, people out of landscapes and architecture, crop pics and mainly turn them into black and whites, sepia or watercolour styles. I also measure them for my frames/mats before manipulating them and do portrait and landscape versions so I can move them around the house.

@ Thank you, I’ll be looking forward to that. I’ve been trying to research designer’s videos for a few years now on photography but they mainly focus on how to hang it and framing or lack thereof. I’m into landscapes and architecture and when I’ve looked at putting 3 pieces together, noticed that I look at them as one piece, not three so I make sure the angles, perspective and tones of black and white or colour work together. I’ve done a black and white triptych detail of wet lily leaves where the top one is the lightest through to the bottom on being dark. It turned three ordinary pics into something eye catching. I love using very ordinary 80s photos of a family trip to Europe and making them timeless. I lower the mid tones and lighten the whole picture. I’ve found the more photos you put together, more negative space in the photos is more effective and the lighter the photos should be otherwise it can be overwhelming with all the dark tones.

@ I love looking at landscape and architectural photography online but aren’t in the position to buy any. What I’ve learnt is self taught so getting other people’s insights would be great. I also want to develop my own skills to get to a level of awesomeness.

Loved this video! It is very useful information. Should you have flow of color and materials extend into the bedrooms?

I like to have a bit of continuity in the bedrooms if possible! Especially the primary bedroom🤎 But sometimes if they are children’s room, etc they end up having their own vibe. In that case I recommend weaving a few of the main home’s colors throughout the space to tie everything together. Thanks for watching!

1. Purpose: how do I want to feel/mood n this room? Warm and cozy, creative and social , or calm and nurturing? 2. How to use/function? personal to unwind and relax, social to share with family and friends, dedicated work space, hobbies, or activity space to watch movies with family and friends. 3. Cadence/rhythm harmonize by follow colors throughout rooms,, and Layer color and depth tones 4. Establish a focal point make it strong 5. Stick to Time-tested furniture proportions 6. Pay attention to sight lines. 7. Hang art and mirrors. 8. Layer combine of ambient/general primary lighting, task table desk lamps, accent lighting wall washes to create layers of light. 9. Base layer is well proportioned rug 10. Window treatments add a layer of softness 11 Most important:: make it personal with pieces you love and things that matter to you.

When hanging two pictures, same size, one over the other, where should the center point be, and how much space between the pictures? Thank you, love your videos - always informative!

I usually like eye level to be around the bottom of the top piece, or in between them. The space between the frames kinda depends on the size of the pieces and the thickness of the frames, but usually around 3-4 inches is a good rule of thumb!

You always give such great tips coupled with such beautiful images. Just one question regarding window treatments - what would you suggest for a window that is not a bay window but is still inset enough that if the rod is hung on the wall then the fabric is quite far from the window and seems to disconnect the two?

In that situation we always try to do a custom configured rod that follows the bow/bay of the window! If not you could do the drapery rod on the outside of the whole inset and just make the panels a bit wider than normal to look like your dressing the entire architectural feature of the window. ❤️ Hope this helps and thanks for watching!!
