A few years ago I did a series of "Low-Cost Ideas" for my old A-Frame trailer. Here's the first of a possible series intended for almost any small trailer or camper. Most ideas cost only a few bucks, nothing when published was over $25 USD. Camp frugally!

I was a fireman for 30 years and when it comes to fire extinguishers there is one more important thing you should do to make them more effective. good idea where you put yours but one thing you need to do is shake it up. yes that's right, when you go down the road and with all the vibrations the powder will settle and if you have a fire only a portion will come out the nozzle. so make it a habit in your TT set up that you shake the extinguisher or even take it our and tap it on the TT tire. this will break up that powder and if you need it you will have 100% of the powder instead of say 30%. OK I''m done now, keep up the good work, love watching your videos

I like my fabric door-hanging shoe-holder. Basically a 24 matrix of pockets. I cut it in half, added a couple of grommets, and hang them all over including on the back of my drivers seat. Books. Water bottles. Cords. Socks. Glasses. Pens. Plastic bags. Containers of little things. Even shoes!

That's a great idea...I should get one to put over the back of the rear seat in my Jeep and my Bronco 2. A great place to store items within easy reach, yet out of the way and not getting tossed around the vehicle during offroad excursions.

Mike Mead At home I use one of the these on the back of the door to my pantry and I store my cleaning supplies in the shoe pockets. They are clear so I’m not always rummaging around looking for the cleaning product I want.

Storage for. Cast iron skillet - my wife found that storing our cast iron skillet in the plastic bubble wrap envelope, like Amazon ships things in, works well. It keeps it the things around it protected from both impact and grime. It's cheap and easily replaced if it gets greasy.

Also a silver coated 3. With the butane stove I can have steaks at a rest area or hamburgers. I even cooked rolled tacos at midnight when traveling. Sometimes I do all nighters. 73

If you are ever looking for a good way to hold something down, 3M EZ-pass adhesive strips! They look like little strips of heavy duty clear velcro. They are a little bit thicker, but are used for car windshields, so can take the blistering heat and freezing cold. And I have a set that's been in my car for 8ish years with no issues, both Canadian winter and warm summers and they dont budge!

Different fires need different fires extinguishers. A very handy one for cooking is a fire blanket. They come in different sizes and you drape it over the fire and snuff it out completely by removing the air it needs. The extra bonus is you don’t have the contents of the extinguisher to clean up after.

One can use those rubber drawer liner if neophrene is not available or costly.. You could fold it over to make a pocket, glue the sides and then figure out where to put it. I would store it in an oven, but he doesn't have one. At least then you can stack other items in it with the rubber sleeve. I would put my smaller ppots/lids inside it when storing. It won't slip around when moving, either.

Don't forget to add some snaps to attach the laptop sleeve (like the paperwork holder) in a convenient spot, like that closet. And get one of those chain metal scrubbies off amazon to clean it with. just add a little water to the pan after cooking to loosen residue, let cool, then scrub with chain scrubby. Also, to re-season periodically with a high temp oil, like grapeseed. Grapeseed oil is a must for cast iron cooking, very high smoke point and more neutral taste than olive oil.
@jimdreger4626

If you use the neoprene sleeve, make sure that it doesn't seal well. You want air to get at the pan to prevent the buildup of moisture and rust.

In addition to fire extinguishers I decided to get some fire blankets. Right now my trailer has one extinguisher mounted by the door, near the front bed. But I also want to add additional extinguishers at the bunkbeds (across from the heat vent and farthest from the door). Adding fire blankets also gives back-up to the extinguishers, and also gives something further to grab on the way out the emergency windows. Fire blankets also smother pan fires pretty well, especially if you don't have a good lid for the pan. Speaking of pan fires -- once you cover and smother the fire DO NOT UNCOVER until that pan is completely cold on its own. Uncovering too soon can allow the fire to re-ignite. Learned in my own kitchen through direct experience.

So, we owned a body shop for years before we had a waste oil heater fire. Mike had one of those cool, vintage, copper fire extinguishers decorating the paint booth wall across the eight bay shop, from the heater. As the temperature increased with the fire, the bracket holding the 60 y/o extinguisher melted and the cannister hit the concrete floor, dispersed its contents as it bounced across the room, and divinely smothered the fire!

Nice Trillium, I've been full time in my 16ft. Scamp for almost 10 years now. A tip or so I can give. Best one I know of don't get carpet, add your own after that's removable for cleaning. Do add it if using in colder weather. I'm glad I didn't. The way and place I store for travel is in paper shopping bags then stacked up together then bagged in plastic bag. Placement is under my fridge or across from it on floor. For weight balance side to side depending on if water tank filled. Otherwise my skillet sets on back burner ready for use. A trick for more counter space when cooking is about 4 ft or so of metal wire shelf. Bend to fit up over burners of stove "Legs" of it about a 13 or so inches long. The ledge of wire to keep it ridgid as shelf will do same. Coffee pot or pan can be set there to cool to.

As for the skillet ... An alternative to the previously mentioned storage: You can use an organizer made to hold plastic lids that is designed to be mounted to the back of cabinet doors. It already has a rounded bottom which would cradle the skillet. Wrapping your small skillet in a small towel will not only fill up space but prevent vibration and damage to the underlying surface. :)

Exactly! I have three skillets and I put dishtowels between them while on the road. In my case, I find it easier to put them in a milk crate and put the crate in my truck while driving from one camp spot to the next. Hey Slim love your new trailer. With the fire extinguisher. It's a good idea to take it out of the holder and give it a shake about once a week while traveling. This prevents the powder from setting up on the bottom and prevents it from possibly clogging up in time of need. When you shake it you'll feel the powder moving inside.

Steven Wilson ... I do submit it's a good idea for when the trailer is parked for a while. However, when the trailer is going down the road it gets an extremely good shake. I know that first hand. That's why it's also a good idea to check the clasp that holds it in it's hanger to insure it's still secure before traveling.

@@arthurleslie9669 Here's one for you, drive around with a box of baking soda. The road vibration will solidify It. It will settle all air space out of the powder. Higher dollar extinguishers eliminates this issue with a two chamber design one for the pressurizing gas and the other is the powder. Pressing the lever transfers the gas to the powder section fluffing it Pryor to exit out the nozzle. Smaller Marine type extinguishers don't. Just a pressurized bottle with a tube that goes to the bottom of the bottle.. It's just a good idea to give it a shake each week to eliminate this issue.

I especially like the fact that the ones you recommended are stainless steel, so I can use them on the outside of my van, with minimal rust staining. Some other great ideas in this one also! Thanks for the push! Probably been mentioned somewhere else, but it looks like the door shade once had the base brackets installed on the door, but were removed at some point in time and the screws were left in the holes. The brackets would have eliminated the possibility of the shade taking out an eye.

Wow, SP! I love keeping organized. Your ideas will be helpful when we get our “new” RV/trailer. (Also, I dislike those plastic blinds. They always seem to disintegrate and look terrible.). Thanks again, I love every one of your videos!

One of the things I love about your videos is the creative modifications you come up with for your trailer. You've given me permission to make mods to my next trailer, thank you! As far as where or how to store the cast iron fry pan, the first thought was a small pillowcase, just to put something around it; but then I thought about the neoprene laptop sleeve that I have for my Chromebook; that might be a better solution; or into the pillowcase and then into the sleeve, it would serve to keep the sleeve just a bit cleaner over time.

Little tip considering the placement of your first-aid kit; Always place first-aid-kits and other emergency-gear at a height you can access while crawling, just in case you are out alone with an injury making standing up painful or impossible.

Great video Slim! And some awesome tips in the comments, so will add mine. Heavy duty velcro from a hardware store, it is designed for outdoor use, like putting a mailbox on a brick wall!! It even works on the vynl walls of my travel trailer, which command hooks only sometimes work. I also got a few dollar store lights, one was a set of string lights that is in the craft section, looks like little houses(thin wood), that I painted up and it runs off 2 aa batteries, just some cute mood lighting for $2 and 2 batteries. I will be hunting bottle caps to use a spring rod to push my shower curtain out!

For your cast iron pan. Two options, but both involve magnets. Mount a decent strength magnet either on the side of a cabinet or into the bottom of the cabinet. If you want to go fancy, use a on/off magnets that has a rotation knob that will deactivate the magnet so you can easily remove the pan. You can DIY it, or just buy it. Cast iron will stick to the magnet and not shake about. You can cover the magnet with a rubber mat to improve traction too.

I know you’ve probably seen this but there’s a magnetic strip I see on other campers that people store silverware and knives and perhaps even pans for easy accessibility. Just an idea you might be able to “slim” around and make work for you! Really enjoyed this video and I look forward to more camper modifications in the future! I also think eventually it would be nice to have a tour of your jeep like what you store in it when you camp and travel. Thanks SP!

HighDollarHobo : HighDollarHobo- I searched for your video, as I bought the fan controller Slim P recommended but it does not come with any directions, but I could not find your video. I did read comments on Amazon about the controller which included some discussions and photos, but the best description required running a separate ground, and that won’t work in my Casita. What is the title of your video? Thanks!

Enjoyed you video. Thank you. As for the iron skillet, I stop at my local post office and pick up several of their padded envelopes slip my skillet in. No grease spots on wall. I put a hanging hook on a wall or cabinet door then tack a piece of elastic to go across to hold the skillet from bumping around. This is how I store all my pots and pans. Has always worked beautifully for me. Good traveling!
