10 Minute Challenge - Sew Your Own Reversible Placemats
Fabric requirements will depend on how many placemats you want to make. But each is 12.5x18.5 inches and each mat requires two pieces at this size. Meaning you should be able to comfortably get 4 mats from two metres of fabric (1m of each).
I use textured blender in White for one side (supercrafts.co...)
and
Metallic Poinsettia for the other side (supercrafts.co...)
Hey. Going straight into this one as it’s part of the 10 minute makes series. So, can I sew a set of reversible placemats in 10 minutes? Let’s find out! Timer Set.
Cut at 12.5 x 18.5”
Repeat with the second fabric. I’m using poinsettia for one side, and plain white for the other. This is because my Christmas table this year will use a tartan tablecloth and I love white against it.. The Poinsettia allows for a more Christmassy feel if I use them elsewhere.
Take a piece of each fabric and place them right sides together.
Sew around at 1/4 inch seam allowance, leaving a turning gap of about 3 inches on one side. Remember to backstitch a little at the beginning and end so it doesn’t come apart when you’re turning it right way out.
Clip the corners. Ordinarily I’d serge or use pinking shears around the entire thing but, well, time constrains and all that.
Turn right way out. Use a point turner, or your choice of tool, to poke out the corners.
Tug the opening so the fabric pulls inward. Pop a pin or two in there.
Stitch around the entire mat to close up the opening, starting where the opening is.
Clip off any thread ends.
Did I make it?
8 minutes and 48 seconds! So, it should be possible to make an entire set of 6 within an hour, which is great if it’s something you forgot or decided to make say… Christmas Eve?
