I have made this type of baby blanket -no batting needed; however, I definitely want batting in my placemats. I made the turning opening a little larger; measured the placemat; cut batting about 1/4” smaller in length and width; stuffed into finished fabric mat; wiggled, arranged and smoothed batting into fabric; pinned carefully into place; stitched opening closed; and then did some simple quilting to hold all layers together. I found it very helpful to build a test placemat with some less than precious fabric. Turned out great! Once I made a couple, they went together quickly. Thanks for the great idea of using the baby blanket method for quick placemats!

It's nice when the instructor leaves the error in their tutorial, as you did with the "oops, ironed the wrong edge." It shows the viewer how to correct that type of error, and it's comforting to a beginner like me to see that even the experts make mistakes sometimes. (To quote one of my favorite movies, "From failing, you learn. From success, not so much.") The placemat turned out absolutely gorgeous, and the method looks pretty easy. Adding this to my "crafts I might actually make someday" playlist 🙂

Hi Jen & Michelle. This is a fabulous tutorial and so easy to follow. I've just finished two placemats today in some fab Christmas fabric. Will be sending to my daughter for her and hubby for Xmas. This is the best video I've found for clear, no fuss and easy construction for this type of placemat which comes out perfect every time as long as you are concise with your measurements. I enjoyed making these and thrilled with the results. I added fusible fleece interfacing to make them more sturdy. I also made a matching half apron. These mats are a great gift idea. 🎄👏😊💖 Thanks so much from Australia 🦘

Thank you for the great tutorial. It works out quite nice. I like it. I made the first one and turned it before I snipped the corners, just to check my miters. It felt quite flimsy. So I added a layer of fusible fleece (pellon 987F) 17" x 11 3/4" centered on the wrong side of the back piece before I sewed the project together. Then proceed as in the tutorial. This made a much more substantial feeling placement.

Thanks, this is beautiful. One thing I do to help myself - on the opening for turning, while still right sides together, I use my hera marker to crease a fold line, just lining up my ruler on the seam and then creasing the gap with the creasing tool. Helps me because I'm so sloppy at closing those openings. I don't know why I can't be as neat as you. I hope you get to enjoy friends and family this year. I've missed those gatherings, too. Thank you for the tutorial.

Stunning...that poinsettia fabric is to die for. I'm using up a small hoard of fabrics from over the decades, and thought of making them into table place mats/runners - thus landing on your great video. Boy did I over think that project...first try: interfacing + sheet of poly fill + quilting...ugh. Then this video...simplified and certainly easy. I bought a bolt of Pellon 808 Craft Fuse (it's single-fusible stabilizer) so I'll add that to add body (and to use it up!). I love how your pattern skips the step of edge binding by using the back fabric as the binding. Genius! :) Keep up the good ideas!!

Adding batting or interfacing would totally be fine!
@ShabbyFabrics2 жыл бұрын
You can definitely add a batting or interfacing. We would recommend adding it only to the center poinsettia fabric, and quilt it first before cutting it down to the size required for the placemat. Then, once the placemat is complete, you could follow up with some more quilting to make sure everything is secure. Hope this helps! 💖 -Michelle

The problem with interfacing only the top fabric is that the border fabric wouldn’t be included. So the answer would be to interface the backing/border fabric before sewing. Barb in Colorado

Years ago I purchased the Lil Sprout self binding receiving blanket from Shabby. It sat in its packaging until just recently I pulled it out to make the blanket. What was I waiting for it was so much fun, easy and adorable. I gifted it to a newborn who’s parents requested I make something for their new arrival. I will be making these lovely placements too. Thank you. All of your tutorials and the newest At Home tutorials are great.

I love your video and especially the fabric, you are an excellent teacher. I made one placemat, but feel I need some fusible so I think I will be taking it apart to add the fusible before I make the next one I've cut out. I love the project and will make more of these for gifts. I might use a heavier fabric than the one I just made to see if I really need fusible.

Thank you for the placement download. I was washing fabric today. Now I have the perfect pattern. My fabric is covered with gingerbread kids. I'll pair it with red dotted fabric. I hope you all enjoy Christmas. Hi from Connecticut.🌷🌷
