Hello everybody!
Tight deadlines plus loads of clutter has never been known as the most motivating scenario.
After I combatted all my procrastination and negative self talk with copious amounts of cross stitch, knitting, and music videos on YT, I remembered ‎@DanaKWhite 's super help video about her decluttering strategy. Giving myself permission to hyperfocus on just one area, I was able to turn 10 minutes of my day into a super productive decluttering sesh.
Now I'm motivated to unpack the DVDs and reclaim the beautiful view out our window this week.
What kind of project are you tackling this week?
Your Pal, Whit

"First rule of decluttering is just look for the trash" GIRL, if I did that 10 mins a day every day...I don't even know how that would transform my life! My house guests aren't coming until Christmas but I am ALREADY feeling overwhelmed about it - so I really needed to hear this ♥ We can do this together!

I don’t know if you watch Mack on Midwest magic cleaning but he has a lot of insight on how a multitude of people function and the challenges they have. Any ways he never looks at the big picture when he’s cleaning/organizing. Just focuses on a small area like two square feet of counter space etc. he cleans peoples homes for free. I love Dana Kay White. Her ten minutes better plan or container method work well for me. It gets easier the more you do it. Like building decluttering muscles.

Its amazing how much you cleared, keep going with Junbugging and all of Dana's 5 steps, that room will be party ready in no time. I am junebughing and doing the 5 steps plus cleaning my main bedroom, seems to work well, i have set myself up very small areas such as a beside cabinet and after a week the room is looking and feeling much better xx

Dana K White is my hands down favorite for motivation. I have followed her for a couple of years now. I've been listening to her podcast lately while i clean and it really helps. Especially when I'm anxious and don't want to do anything but curl up in a ball and cry.

I can't say I feel that looking for trash is the way to clear a space that is simply cluttered. Especially for a person that doesn't seem to have a house full of trash. I would suggest focusing in one spot. You spend a lot of time looking around instead of just staying in one spot. Ask yourself "have I used this in 6-12 months?" If the answer is NO, then you know you don't need it. Either donate it or throw it out. If you donate it just set up a run for Salvation Army to come pick it up. DON'T try to figure out who in your life wants or needs it. Priority number 1 is DECLUTER. NOT to solve other people's needs. I see lots of people keep stuff for ONE day in the future. If that day didn't come in a year or less you won't need it. You have to determine if your main goal is to free yourself from stuff or planning for THE ONE DAY in the future that almost never comes.

Dana K. White’s method is designed to help those for whom decluttering is a challenge, people who feel completely overwhelmed and thus do not know where to start. Some may also have little time and/or low energy, possibly even disabilities etc. which can make the situation even more challenging 😞 It’s also a « no question method » as in you don’t have to ask yourself whether you’ve used something in the last 6-12 months or whether you will use it within the next 6-12 months, or if you like the item a.k.a if it « sparks joy » etc. Having to answer such questions can feel paralysing when you find yourself in a state of overwhelm, feeling submerged by your own stuff, and the task at hand feels daunting, in particular at the beginning of the process. I believe it gets easier with time 😌 The basic principle is « progress and only progress » and that every little thing you do matters, because, even if you’ve only dealt with one item, you’re better off than when you started. That’s why Dana does not recommend people empty containers/drawers/wardrobes/closets etc., quite the opposite, because then you can stop whenever you have to and you will not have made the situation worse. I like to incorporate her 1st rule, « look for trash », with the 2nd one which is « do the easy stuff », that is everything that already has an established home somewhere should go there immediately with the prompt « take it there now ». Sometimes that « home » can be a rubbish bag 😃 To me combining the 1st 2 « rules » feels more motivating and productive than simply looking for rubbish, even though there is almost always something that can or needs to be thrown away/recycled 😊 I’ve been following Dana for a while (it’s probably quite obvious… 🤭) but I also watch and follow other channels about decluttering, minimalism etc. (which is probably why Whit’s channel popped up in my feed 🙂). I find Dana’s « rules » and concepts *very* helpful but I also like to integrate questions such as the one you suggested, even though I do not set any fixed amount of time because that does not work for me, it varies *so much* depending on the item. What works best for me in general, not just when it comes to decluttering, is to find my own way of doing things, finding inspiration here and there. I also know that there are those who need to be given an exact set of steps to follow, and that’s ok too. We all have to try to figure out what works for us 😊 I find that Whit did a lot of progress in just 10 minutes!! In particular considering the fact that she was feeling overwhelmed and lacked motivation. You did a great job, Whit!! 👏🌺

I've been junebugging and didn't even know it!😂 My best friend has stuff EVERYWHERE but very cautiously things are getting organized. There's no end in sight but definite improvement. She has terrible chronic pain and is unable to do much at all. Very small attainable goals😊

Your entire family created that clutter and untidyness not just you, so your entire family need to help you to clear it up. You are working to a deadline and need their help to get there. Even if it's just your husband or daughter fetching and carrying things to where they need to go its helpful. Get one of them to entertain your son so you get uninterrupted time to work on it. Good start but it needs more than 10 mins a day to clear it enough to entertain guests.

Good idea! Maybe you could ask them to join your for a 5-10 min pickup? or give them a concrete task to do? (Yes, it still means the decision process + the mental load is still mainly yours, but they could help with some of the grunt work :) )

I wonder if you could make it a game for your son.. Give him a basket and tell him you're going to race to pick up garbage/recycle and he can race to see how many toys he can pack up and get to his room. Granted they will need to be sorted later, but at least you'll get some more of the main living area looking good.

I know you love the Dana K. White method, but have you ever heard of or tried the FLYLady? I think her method would really help you a lot. The FLY stands for Finally Loving Yourself. She teaches progress not perfection and you can get a lot done fifteen minutes at a time. She's also big on developing routines, tackling areas of your home with Zone cleaning, and stop living in C.H.A.O.S. or Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome. It's about Babysteps and jumping in where you are. No need to wait for the first of the month or whatever. She also started following Pam and Peggy and the card file system to begin with but soon got overwhelmed and created her own method that she now teaches hundreds of thousands of people around the world. She's helped me and I'm sure she could help you. It's worth giving her a look

Your doing great, keep going!!!!! Try the don't put it down put it away method. that will help from areas getting re-cluttered. Also instead of just 10 minutes a day of taking out trash and recycles try every time you walk by it, pick up and put it in that pile. Once a day get it out of your house. You can do this, believe in yourself!! I know it's hard but you can do it!!!!!!! Also ask for help. Ask your daughter and husband to help get all the trash and cardboard etc. out of the house. Don't give up, I know anxiety and depression can bring you down, because I suffer with it. But I keep pushing and pushing. I wish I lived near you I would come take all the recyclables and trash away for you. If you get rid of that you will be surprised how much room you'll have. I believe in you! ❤❤🦋🦋❤❤🦋🦋❤❤🦋🦋❤❤🦋🦋❤❤🦋🦋
