My favorite dumb alternate history scenario is Rome industrializes. Because they were remarkably close to it but also so far from it. I just love the idea of steam powered Roman War tractors like a really weird Warhammer steam tank but ducked out in Roman decorations. The image in my brain pleases me.

Justinian only failed because of the plague. In my opinion, he was the greatest Roman Emperor since Aurelian, and he is up to this point in time up in my top 5 Roman Emperors. The others are in chronological order Augustus, Trajan, Aurelian and Constantine. Vespasian, Hadrian, Antoninus Pius, Diocletian and Constantine would be my pics for the remaining places of a top ten. Anyway, given the amount of disasters Justinian had to deal with, he might have been the greatest Emperor of them all. As far as I can tell, he dealt with every crisis, but the plague overstretched his Empire. It killed about 25 to 35% of the Empire's population, and losses among city inhabitants, the bureaucracy, the clergy and the military were proportionally much higher. Vikings is a nonsensical term the way it is used, it's as dumb as quantum leap or renewable energy (all are valid and useful terms, except for renewable energy, which is physical nonsense) but if we would say a Scandinavian colonisation of North America, I can see it happen but only in one very specific case: If Canute's North Sea Empire continues. So basically if Harald Hadrada wins the English Crown in 1066 than it is possible. The Spanish conquistadors were not backed by a unified Empire they were backed first by a guy (Charles V) and later his family (the Habsburgs) who happened to rule over half of or more of Western, Central and Eastern Europe including at times almost all of modern Spain, Portugal, the Benelux countries, Germany, the better part of Italy, Austria, Czechia, Slovakia, Slovenia, parts of Hungary and Poland (just talking about the 1500s), parts of modern day France, Morocco, Tunisia etc. are just the cherry on the top. A unified Empire this was not. The North Sea Empire in the 1000s was more unified than the Habsburg lands in the 1500s. The Medici probably would have never been able to unify Italy, the Borgias however, if not for a stroke of very bad luck that incapacitated Cesare right at the time when he should put the contingency plans for his father's (Pope Alexander VI) death in motion, might have had a good run trying at least. If Franz-Ferdinad survives and his wife dies, there will be war, no ifs and buts about it. If both survive Sarajevo, however, there won't be a WW1 in 1914. Anyway, there almost certainly will be a WW1 (or more accurately in my opinion WW5, after the 80 years and 30 years War [WW0], the War of Spanish Succession and the concurrent Great Northern War [WW1], the War of Austrian Succession [WW2], the 7 years War [WW3] and the Coalition Wars against Revolutionary and Napoleonic France [WW4]). It might not be sparked by the Balkans, but I think it will be sparked, if not by the Balkans, than by something in Asia, or Africa. Though chances are the Alliances would end up quite differently. In the Asia scenario, it would probably be something that would turn the Great Game between Russia and Britain into a war. Which would lead Germany and most probably Austria-Hungary to join the English against the Russians and the French. In the African case, chances are that France and Britain come to blows, of course it might also be sparked by something minor let's say a conflict between Belgium or Portugal and Germany in the first case once again Germany would end up on Britain's side, in the 2nd however the Alliances probably would look pretty much like in the historic WW1. I disagree with him on the US-German war part of WW2 being unavoidable. I think it was very avoidable at this point in time. The thing is, until Germany declared war on the USA after Pearl Harbor, there wasn't really a WW2, there was a war in Asia that started in 1937 and a war (or series of wars) in Europe which started in 1939. These two wars only got connected after Pearl-Harbor. If Moustache Man doesn't declare war on the USA, there isn't a snowball's chance in hell that the USA go to war with Germany until Japan is beaten. Also, Roosevelt would have a very hard time selling lend-lease to Congress and the American public if the USA were in a shooting war with Japan and not at war with Germany. He probably could argue it for the UK as they were fighting the Japanese as well, but for the USSR? Not, happening. Without allied lend-lease and no Americans in North-Africa, chances are that Italy stays in the fight much longer. The UK might even lose Egypt eventually, and the war on the Eastern Front would look quite different as well. Given how closely fought many battles on the Eastern Front were, I think it's likely that quite a few more would go the Germans way without land-lease. Also, without US bombers handicapping German industries and American escorts handicapping German U-boats and surface raiders, the battle in the Atlantic would be a different one as well. In my opinion, if Germany doesn't declare war on the USA, when the USA turn around and go to war with Germany eventually after they have beaten Japan, and this is pretty much unavoidable, except for the uranium deposits in East Germany being discovered a bit earlier than 1946, Germany would be in a much stronger position and the remnants of the USSR in a much weaker (I don't think the Nazis, given their ideology of racial superiority and Slavs being Untermenschen, could ever conquer the USSR, but they very well could destroy it). So while I think the Allies would win eventually, they'll have to do it before the uranium is discovered in East Germany because if the war drags on that long, Germany can outproduce the USA in nukes and if both sides have nukes it will turn into a Cold War Scenario.

To answer your question if Cody is getting sick of alternate history, I'd have to cross-reference the 2024 upload figures of his AltHist channel and PointlessHub, because it feels like he's done a lot more PointlessHub stuff last year than in previous years. Who knows, maybe he just had more fun talking about silly movie franchises or directors he kinda adores (Godzilla, Transformers, Roland Emmerich) than delving into increasingly stupid Alternate History rabbit holes, now that he has already covered most of the more plausible scenarios.
@MrTJPAS10 күн бұрын
It does seem like Cody has more fun with his PointlessHub content right now than the Alternate History stuff. I agree that it might be that he's covered so many scenarios at this point that now he's having to spend more time to find new ones that aren't either implausible or re-treading on previous material he's made videos about, and eventually everyone needs a breath of fresh air and wants to talk about something completely different from what they usually discuss.

If Rome didn't fall, nothing much would change. For one, after Rome most people tried to keep playing Rome. For technological advancement to occur so many things have to come together... the industrial revolution needed so many things to fall in place... at most we'd maybe see the Germanic tribes Romanizing more and instead of a Celtic/Germanic/Latin creole, you lot would be speaking a proper Romance language.

It was. That's an English language problem. Carthage was an Empire even though it was a Republic, as was Athens (Delian league). As were the Netherlands for parts of their history, as was Venice, as are currently the USA and China, as was the USSR. Also, all the French Republics were and are republican Empires. The problem in the English language is that you use one word for two connected but different concepts. In my native German, the term Empire has two translations: Weltreich (world realm), which denotes the power of a nation and the 2nd one is Kaiserreich (emperor realm) which is any state ruled by an Emperor. The examples I gave before all belong to the first definition of Empire. A few more Empires without an Emperor include: Portugal, Spain (except for Charles V), the Kingdom of France, England, later the UK, until Queen Victoria was crowned as Empress of India. Anyway Rome was, in my opinion, an Empire according to the first definition at least after the 1st Punic War, though I'd argue it was one even before, because they managed to beat Carthage, which was an Empire of the time. As far as I know, no Empire in history has been beaten by a none-Empire in a long-lasting war if the none-Empire had not been backed up by another Empire or the Empire had been distracted and/or weakened by other problems. Just a few examples: without France, the US never would have gained their independence, without Soviet backing for the Vietcong/North Vietnam the USA win in Vietnam, without the backing of the US for the Mujahedin the USSR wins in Afghanistan.

Yeah the first unified Viking state (Denmark) had only just happened in 965 and by the time of Leif Eriksson (the year 1000 roughly) Denmark was way more steeped in England with Canute the Great becoming the king of The Great Northsea Empire 10-15 years later. Sweden and Norway were also pretty busy at the time, I think Sweden wasn't a full concept till the 12th century and Norway even later

If you want a no electricity option try reading David Weber's Safehold Series (Scifi world after man is nearly wiped out and forced to hide without electronics and maintain that restriction) Need to start at the beginning and I will warn you they are big books and nearly a dozen of them. Mr. Terry I think you would enjoy them but the scope will eat some time. I buy Weber's works in hardbound as I will reread them especially the Honorverse stuff(his other big seller set of series). Most his stuff is published by Baen Books but Safehold is Tor books. He also cowrites some including a couple of the alternate (due to time displacement) history by Eric Flint known as the Ring of Fire Series. The Ring of Fire series impressed me for the real historical detail few outside historians will know and also close to home with the transplanted town is a WV Coal Town a couple hours away. The town's name is adjusted (there is both a Grantville and Grant Town in WV and the Grantville as described is Grant Town with a power plant added. Both are not far from Morgantown (home of WVU) but Grant Town is south and Grantville is west of WVU. I'm South West of both near Charleston WV. They are dropped in Europe and deal with the two most famous Cardinals of France (One before he even takes the name he is known by and still using his Italian form) I don't want to say more for spoilers but again I think you would enjoy some I have mentioned here.

one alternative scenario ive been curious about for a long time now is what if germany during the 1st world war attacked russia first early on
@avicarnonbagel27913 күн бұрын
Imo the situation would be pretty much the same. Germany still wins in Russia and stalls against France. Remeber that, even in our timeline, Germany was fighting Russia much earlier than they expected to. An invasion of Russia still would have triggered a war with France due to the Entente's agreements. Two fronts was pretty much inevitable.

I completely disagree with his Soviet coup take. If coup plotters were more competent, chances are, Russia would be able to preserve entirety of the imperial core, since as Sergyi Plokhyi in his "The Last Empire..." shows, most leaders of the Soviet Republics, during the first day of the coup were massive fence sitters. What I mean by "more competent" is start by arresting Yeltsin, the same day as Gorbachev. What the hell were they thinking? He was a well known storm rider at that point. Obviously the whole thing would require more planning. Even if, we imagine that Caucasus + Moldova + Baltics managed to run from the Kremlin's empire. They don't really matter. (besides Caspian oil). 3 Slavic states + 3 Central Asian states (i.e. countries that considered signing new treaty until pretty much the last moment, and were most likely to bend the knee before the coup) are about 87,5% of USSR's population and probably close to that in industrial power. Thankfully it didn't happen.
