School uniforms act as a great leveller. I came from a council estate on the edge of town that was a bit rough around the edges. But when I arrived at Grammar School, a mostly middle class school, all the rich kids were wearing the same clothes as me.

The reality is that if pupils at school were allowed to wear their own clothes, it would soon degenerate into a competition - who has the (expensive) Nike or Adidas (or whatever) training shoes, the designer T-shirts etc. If everyone wears the same uniform that's at least one issue removed from the kids' lives.@@SimpleScottishLiving

The UK winter is dark and has a unique kind of damp chillyness that goes beyond the actual temperature, what saves it is in the middle of that darkness is December and the run up to Christmas with all the lights and decorations, Christmas markets and the fun of Christmas itself, at the end of that as we head into a new year the days are getting longer again with another Spring and Summer to look forward to, great video again and Finn is very cute.

Already noticing the difference this week alone. Lights on at 815 p.m instead of 9/10p.m and lights on in the mornings again. Yeah, we always say due to our dampness, our winters may only average -5/7 degrees Celsius but feels a lot colder. Face numbing and aching cold.

I’m am Scotland born and Canadian raised. The last time I was “home” I stood in the middle of Glasgow Central Station and told my husband and adult children that I felt like I was amongst my people lol. There is a feeling when you go back that is like no other. I’m very intrigued by your journey and feel like it is something that I would like to think we could do one day now that we’re retired. Even if I am just dreaming never say never! Really enjoy your videos!

Definitely never say never! And, we understand that feeling more than you know. It wasn't until last summer that we even full heartedly considered the move (although it had been a pipe dream). Scotland is a wonderful place to retire. It just takes time and some savings to be able to make it happen realistically. We thought that we would have some slight second thoughts after moving, but honestly, it's the happiest our family has ever been. If you ever have any specific questions, please do feel free to email us. We've had other subscribers reach out, and we actually did the same to people we had followed. Wishing you all the best

I am Scottish and I live in Scotland. I have travelled abroad extensively over the last 53 years and currently have family who have lived in Northern California for 22 years. I have spent over 6 months visiting friends and family in the USA and travelling too. I am not surprised that you are loving Scotland. As you so joyfully articulate, there is so much to like. I am particularly happy for your kids. You are giving them an upbringing that they simply could not experience in the USA. When you have more time, I am sure that you will discover that only parts of Scotland are wet. I see that you have visited Yellowcraig, and North Berwick beaches. East Lothian has some of the driest areas in the country and the UK. No severe droughts, deadly forest/bush fires, or earthquakes and sunamis. Before you know it,you will be wondering why you ever contemplated bringing up kids in California. Welcome to Bonnie Scotland.

My wife and I lived in Scotland for 18 yrs. I’m the yank she’s Scottish. We lived on the west coast. The weather was brutal. We would holiday a couple of times a year in the med to get some sun. We do miss the easier access to Europe for vacationing but the US has great vacation spots as well. Recommend visitors to the US try somewhere other than Florida. We are so glad to be back in the states. Very glad we left prior to the lockdowns. We moved back to a red state so we didn’t experience any of that. On the odd occasion when we miss Scotland we watch a little “Still Game” and it takes us right back. Cmon the Hoops!

I phoned work and said I'd be a little bit late whilst I sorted him out because I knew it would pass (he has epilepsy and had had a little seizure and needed to recover). When he was feeling OK I popped him in the car and drove him to school. As we pulled up in the road outside he disolved into tears! I thought he was feeling bad again. But no, he just sobbed "Dad! I forgot it's non-uniform day!" I phoned and checked it was OK to bring him into work and he just came with me. I wasn't going to send him into school in his uniform after the morning he'd had. We had a lovely day actually so it was alright in the end. And yes, I had the best ever employers.

Life in old country, was a constant wash, rinse and repeat. I was visiting and exploring alone with munchkins. Here in Scotland, I've got peace and quiet (although occasionally the landscaping and road services are done wee bit too early 😅😅😅. However, we've never felt so alive. Discovering something new every time we venture out. As well as learning loads of things, I never knew before. Just since the Pandemic lockdowns, friends and neighbours have disappeared, so a little more loneliness 😮. Finnegan is just adorable. Once he'll reach the one year mark, it gets much easier. Always a pleasure to watch your videos. It's like having news from good friends.

Dear Annie and Zach, you two are pure gems. Just as always i enjoyed all of your conversation. You are jumping into all of the experiences so wholeheartedly and with so much joy. You two just give me the giggles. And that is one thing i love about you. Your smiles and laughter are so very much contagious. I don't know how many times i am sitting there myself smiling or bursting out with laughter. I am on the same page with humour as you, Annie.. what kind of humour does not really matter as long as someone can make me smile or laugh. I am all in for the positive side of things as well. And i have to agree, the sense of humor of Americans and the sense of humour of British people are a whole different story. But once one gets used to both of them, you just ginna gave to love them. I adore both cultures with their quirks. I also am a country girl. I grew up in a village in Germany, just under 2000 people. And i love the peaceful, quiet, slower pace of life. After graduating my A-levels, i moved to New Mexico. Planned was for 3 months but then that turned into 3 years. I studied for 2 years at a private college there and then my daughter was born. Due to several circumstances i moved back to Germany, when my baby was about 9 months old. During summer months the college would take us on road trips throughout the United States. It was awesome to see more of all the diversity the US has to offer. I love the more rural areas with lots of nature and i love connecting with people. I am no big city girl. It is the same with the UK. Although i have been in London several times and i simply enjoyed all of it, I have been all over the city, and also to Oxford, Abbingdon and Bath, i do prefer and live the smaller towns and villages. I love the history, the kind of houses, the smaller scale, the coziness, the landscapes, nature, wildlife,... There is so much to explore. Just all of it is enchanting. And cozying up with a fire on a rainy day is pure bliss. Maybe i am a bit weird in that sense, but i love the rain. I am enthralled when it is rainy and foggy and i love thunderstorms. Don't get me wrong, i love sunny, warm days too. But summer here with 30 to 35 degree Celsius is not what makes me thrive, unlike my daughter. I love the days with 20 to maybe 25 degree, then it is fun. I also love the tea culture in the UK. We also have cafes, but they are just not the same vibe. I have a sweet tooth and i love tea. Coffee i only started to drink because of the caffeine to keep me going. And to go to such a cozy place and to sit and chat and absorb and to enjoy the flavours. It gives you all the warm feelings. I really have to check on the public toilets next time i go somewhere, but i believe we too have gaps at least sometimes on the bottom and i guess always on the top. But i just can't remember if the toilets here also have peep holes. I definitely must inspect them next time. I also think unuforms at schools is a good thing. Just the hustle with choosing clothes and having the right clothes to be one of the cool kids or to fit in and all the headaches and heartache with not having the right clothes or not fitting in because of them takes so much pressure off of the children. I also think that it can help with the sense of community and feeling more connected with each other. And my daughter would also love the great indoors activity opportunities in Scotland nowadays. Well, she is 25, but still, even as an adult one can enjoy and play and have fun too, can't we? Not only the kids. Here, we also have public transport like trains and busses, but i must say, in my rural area, the schedule of busses is not ideal. There is still much potential upwards. In the village, i live in now, you need a car, because the busses are just too infrequent. But i love having the opportunity of puclic transport. Even though, in recent years, i tried to avoid them because it just got more dangerous it seems. In all my years using public transport daily, i have never felt unsafe. But nowadays, there seems to always be happening some kind of crime. It makes one feel more unsafe and thus i rather drive my car. Just on the very top of my bucketlist is exploring Scotland, second is Ireland and Wales and third is England (i have not seen nearly enough, would love to explore other parts as well). I love watching documentaries to get to know more about the countries, the people, the cultures, and all there is to explore. But it is so much more fun and so much more personal and hands-on with you two. It is like having close pals taking one along on the journey and explaining and showing one around and having lovely and lively chitchats. You let your lights shine so bright and sparkly that it is an immense pleasure and such pure joy to follow you along. I am sending you lots of warm hugs 😊❤️😊❤️❤️😊

What struck me going from northern England to Scotland was coming across someone still doing gardening after 9pm when it was still quite light. That's the advantage of living so far north. Not such fun in January with very short days. Some, who live in southeast England, would have us stay on British Summer Time all year round (they would be least affected). I'm old enough to remember the experiment in the 1960s when this was tried. It was miserable and depressing going to school in the dark and many coming home in the dark as well.

I have known the present owner since he came out of hospital after being born in 1976! I trust you enjoyed your time there. In my day it was a commercial plant nursery and spent a lot of time there as the “big hoose” was owned by the parents of my best friend (still my best friend after 55 years!). You’ll only see billboards anywhere like in North America in cities in the UK, so I can think of some near the elevated motorways through Birmingham and into London, but it’s heavily controlled under the planning system, and legislation over advertising. Weather wise we’re on the Fife coast, so very similar to you in East Lothian. I’ve lost track of how many people assume Scotland is going to be non stop rain, and aside from when the weather comes in off the sea, that’s not the case at all. The Firth of Forth seems to create a lovely little microclimate for the Fife and Lothian coastline, and if you check out the Met Office rainfall maps, a lot of the time there is this thin sliver of low rainfall along the east coast at the same levels as southern England.

Glad you are so happy in Scotland! Growing up in southern California in Los Angeles in the 1960's businesses were always closed on Sundays, and especially for holidays. I now live in Washington state, and these days the vast majority of businesses are open seven days a week, and even for a few hours on holidays. I feel sorry that employees don't have that work/life balance. I remember thinking it was absolutely TERRIBLE when stores started having big sales on Thanksgiving evening. And I would never go to any of these events as I value my family time, and I suppose am in my own quiet way boycotting that type of business ethos. I would love to come and live in Scotland too, but ....I will content myself with visiting. Washington is lovely, and my children are here. Great vlog 👍 there's nothing quite like snuggling up on the sofa with a cuppa on a gray wet day ❤ I'm in Essex England and we're still getting temperatures averaging 26 degrees with that awful humidity that the UK gets 🥵 roll on the autumn 🍂 😀

It's good that you're learning to like the rain. You should fully embrace it though; put on some waterproofs, go out and live a little!

That's one of the many positives of getting a puppy! Regardless of the weather, we'll have to get outside every single day!

OMG, I LOL with the toilet comparison. I’ve said for many years after visiting Europe & the United Kingdom, WHY, oh WHY can’t Americans have bathrooms with actual privacy. Are we that cheap we can’t afford the extra 2”? Hysterical. I grew up in New Orleans and love sitting outside as you said and watching the rain and thunder/lightening. I’m so thrilled you are enjoying your new lives.

Right?! It's bewildering haha. Thanks so much for watching. And yes, those southern thunder storms are such a treat that I never knew I'd miss.

Well Annie one of my early memories of growing up in Scotland is of a thunderstorm that lasted for hours and was so bad that we were visiting my aunt and my parents decided that we would stay overnight rather than trying to go home, on public transport of course.

I don't think that rain necessarily wears thin. Cosying up indoors while the rain drips on a ye olde British window probably never loses it's charm.

Yeah, Wick to Bournemouth in a day? Not unless you are seriously committed, that's 12 hours of solid driving. But I know you know that now. Still amusing. The lack of rain in the Bay Area was very hard for me, but access to the coast was easy. One year, 2017?, we were on a road near the bottom of Don Pedro Reservoir Bridge which hadn't been dry since 1975. But six months later we were there the day before the reservoir overflowed the emergency spillway. Nine months of summer, which eventually led to moving to New Hampshire in 2018. Ah, you already met the endless days in the summer. One of the heaviest days of rain I ever dealt with was in Georgia in 1989, second time I visited the US. I drove from there to Boston and it rained hard for at least the first six hours. I think that was in September, I went after the UK school holidays were over and flights were cheaper. Scotland until the 80s pretty much closed up shop on Sundays.

Thanks for sharing you experience. I agree, the rain I experienced in Georgia and Florida was something unbelievable, especially when driving 🫣

You may see billboards in the City but not out of town they are illegal near roads. What you may find is a sign in a field on an old trailer. That gets around the legislations as it’s not classed as a permanent structure.
