Just found your channel by a chance, as a European living in Scotland i can relate to a lot of what you have stated. I've lived in the States as well and enjoy Scotland a lot more, especially with 2 kids. Everything is better in my view - less stress, less traveling times, less chemicals in the food, less desire for material stuff, better work/life balance, affordable healthcare, better employment rights, closer to outdoors, less traveling times to european "hot spots", etc. My kids are eastern European, but speak with Scottish accent, mixing the two languages in one sentence 😂 Very good channel, i really enjoy watching you, nice, humble, real down to earth youtubers. Its such a shame that Zack can't start in Scottish police....
@alicemilne1444Ай бұрын
I think it is entirely correct that Zach has to wait three years. He has been out of Scotland too long, out of touch with local life, and has no training in and experience of policing in Scotland. I would not want an untrained and inexperienced person working as a police officer in my country.
@Dolph681Ай бұрын
@alicemilne1444 I'm sure he can get trained quite fast, considering his experience in the states. After all he lived here until age 22-23, then in the states he was in California state police(from the photos they shared). A person like him can get very well in track with police work. I had a colleague forklift driver who became police officer in Scotland and he didn't know anything despite living decades here. I also understand what you are saying, but I think Zack is not your regular beginner when comes to police work.
@k.r.6697Ай бұрын
@@alicemilne1444I agree. Policing in the states which is where Zach’s experience is, is vastly different. You wouldn’t want him carrying that into Scotland in its entirety. Likely Zach waiting three years will provide time to recondition.

I don't know- I think there's clearly a lot of 'Scottish' accent underneath Zach's undeniable American top notes. I think it's resurfacing little by little! It was really interesting to hear your perspective on all of these questions - particularly those on how the children have adapted to their new life. I guess you chose to move at a good time for them- in 5 years time it might have caused them more angst about leaving friends and everything they knew behind.
@SimpleScottishLivingАй бұрын
Yes, 100% we had heard from friends that kids start changing and being less accepting by about 3rd/4th grade in the U.S. We knew if we were going to make the move, it had to be this year or pretty much retirement!

One thing you might notice about the kids' education is the way history is taught. In the US, schools focus primarily on American history, but there's not as much of it compared to the UK, which has a much longer and broader historical narrative. Because of this, British schools don’t spend as much time on individual events in history. In the US, American history (rightly) places a huge emphasis on the American Revolution (or the American War of Independence, as it’s known in the UK) because it marks the birth of the nation. However, it might surprise Americans to learn that, in Britain, the American Revolution isn’t considered such a big deal-it’s more of a footnote in our history. And it’s not because we "lost"; it’s simply that any of our far-flung colonies wanting independence wasn’t particularly unusual. In fact, over 60 countries celebrate their independence from Britain, so it's not rare or unique. Also, the 13 colonies weren’t all that significant to Britain at the time. We had much bigger and more pressing matters happening closer to home. The biggest consequence of the American Revolution for Britain was that it helped set the stage for the French Revolution, which had a far greater impact on Britain and Europe in general. Adding to this, as I mentioned earlier, British history stretches much further back in time, so there’s a lot more to cover. Because of that, history classes here don’t spend much time on events like the American Revolution, which I imagine Annie was taught in depth in the US schools. This is a classic example of two different perspectives on the same event. Neither is more "right" or "wrong" than the other; they are simply two valid, historically accurate ways of looking at the same historical moment. I don't know what age the kids are, or how much history they've already been taught in their US schooling, but if it's important to Annie that they learn a more in-depth/American perspective on the American Revolution she'll need to brush up on her history (if need be) and get ready to do some home schooling! 😊

@@MoodyMarco-vj3oe I often hear the phrase "In America 100 years is a long time, In the UK 100 miles is a long way away" The top part of the building I live in is still "new" it was built a little over 100 years ago, more houses added above, the part I live in is from the 1600's which is older than American independence and it's still relatively "new" compared to the churchyard outside my house which some of the leaders of the battle of Falkirk are laid to rest, William Wallace best friend Sir John de Graham included they're from 1297 and the church yard is older still, that's where things start getting old here and they go all the way back to the Antonine wall which runs through the town, that's 2000 years ago and it goes back further. That's just one town in the middle of Scotland, yet 100 miles away is an entirely different story, even different ways of speaking. Yet that's not even a road trip in America and there was still loads of Europeans getting off boats there 100 years ago.

I'm really glad your kids are adapting so well - I'm a 28 year old British guy, though moved to the US when I was 10 and back to the UK when I was 15 due to my Dad's job, so can relate to this channel a lot. Moving the kids when they were young was definitely a good move as it gets much harder when they're teenagers (both in-terms of schooling and the emotional impact). Completely understand the need for Zach's accent - even English people struggle to understand the Scottish accent sometimes, so adapting to ensure you could communicate clearly and not put yourself in any danger with your job was the correct thing to do.

Glad you are enjoying it here. Love to drop my hints here, so I'll let you have them. For Mexican food come to Glasgow, get the in laws to keep the kids and do a weekend in glasgow pubs and restaurants. Next winter Make sure you get plenty of screen de icer, antifreeze screen cleaner and a really good ice scrapper. Something which will make life easier Is a dehumidifier sack in the car. You will get caught out with a snap freeze that will make you late for work. Car window frosts can get really hard. Keep gloves in the car just in case. Remember it can hit -10 easily here. Window spray ( or window skooshies) will freeze up and you will end up with manky window. Buy gloves, not one pair , 5 pairs each. Pavements can get mega icey, so if you are not used to it , take care. If you are back in the UK and have not driven in the snow and ice , take your time, get winter tyres if your budget allows. Don't pour hot water on your car windscreen to defrost it, you may break it. Sorry if this stuff is obvious but if you are not used to it , you will get caught out.
@SimpleScottishLivingАй бұрын
No, this is super helpful! We truly appreciate you taking the time to leave some tips. Zach’s been in hot states for far too long and hasn’t had to battle the elements in quite awhile.

I'm reading your advice Craig and it sounds a lot like what winter is like in Oklahoma too; Indianapolis was worse. GREAT advise! I would add to plan your outings so that you don't have to go out more than is absolutely necessary, but again, that's an obvious one for most folks.

Yip, but if you have been away long enough and he left in his 20's will forget about having to chisel ice off the windscreen and the window wipers freezing in a snap frost. Even the bin lid feezing shut. Which reminds me gloves or anything in the car for when you go to a fuel station and the handle is freezing and your hand starts to ache with the cold. Lidl are doing the dehumidifier sacks in the middle. I never used then until about 5 years ago. Best thing ever. Helps stop the inside of the car windows freezing. My other advice is to go live in Spain for 2 months.

I will say that I didn't find any of your answers to be surprising to me; I think I knew the answers before you gave them. I believe there will always be those feelings for others that you miss, but you also know what you're doing now is the better choice for your family. Living without television has been amazing for me personally, and I do watch a show now and again online, but yeah, just being free from having to be tethered to the TV or feeling like I had to watch dozens of adverts to get to the show was crazy. The food is better, the water is better, the air is good, the exercise is great. Jobs...well, there you go, that's the possibly hang up. "If you're rich you're OK" is a great way to sum that one up, but a person can also trade the market and not be "working" so they could that if they had a mind to do it. (hint)

We all moved to California as my Dad was ill with cancer. My wife died many years age when she was 54 of lung cancer and I remarried a few years later and had a daughter from my second wife. What I wanted you to know, was that my youngest daughter (the one born here in California. discovered that as I was born in Scotland she could fill out a form and if I signed it, she became a UK citizen right away! she met an English guy and she moved there a couple months ago and now lives just outside Leeds and works from home in IT, she is waiting for her UK passport and can work and receive all medical needs as if she was born in Scotland. I do not think a lot of people know this rule that is available to children of a Scottish born parent. I wish your happiness continues in Scotland, I think it is the most beautiful country anywhere. One last thing. get a scottish meat pie and a roll. butter the roll and place the pie inside the roll with some HP sauce on it, close the roll and press it down, you will thank me for it! Best to your whole family. 😊 PS. if you listen to podcasts, my daughter has a monthly one called "Rhythm on the Rocks" where they talk music and sample and review Scotch Whisky etc. Hope you check it out, her name is Frizz on the show.

Anyone born overseas to a UK born parent can get a UK passport since the 1983 immigration act. If you were born before 1983 to this right goes back to your grandfather on your father's side only ie if your grandfather was UK born and you were born before 1983. 1983 Act gave women the right to pass on their nationality on one generation but removed the grandfather clause from men. However if your grandparent was Irish you can apply for an Irish passport...from my understanding. With an Irish passport you can live and work anywhere in the EU and UK (due to a special relationship between Ireland and the UK).

QUESTIONS: 1. What do the houses look like compared to a standard home in the US? 2. Would you be willing to give us a tour of the inside of your home? Absolutely love the stove in the background. 3. When buying a house, how big are the yards, on average, do homes typically have? 4. What is the average cost for a standard sized home, use your home as an example Sq. Foot & the amount of bedrooms I mean. 5. Are the rooms generally really small or are they average compared to homes across the US? We have been quite seriously looking into moving to another country while the USA is in political chaos. We would prefer to have all the rooms on the same level but not a deal breaker. We're older, not old yet, but still older. 6. What about the medical, is it expensive? Do Americans have to pay extra for things like medical insurance compared to citizens? 7. What about Dental and how is that handled $$$? 8. Are Americans who move there even eligible for Medical & Dental or do they have to live there for a period of time first? We are going it calms down here in the US by the end of 2025, but if it doesn't or the projections aren't good, we are moving elsewhere. We hope to have a significant amount of money saved up and sell stuff so that the first 1-2 years of living in another country won't be as harsh. It will require a ton of savings on or end. We will see. We know that pets usually have to be quarantined for a duration when moving to another country, so we are planning for that too if we move. I hope all these questions aren't too overwhelming. We are starting preparations already just in case 2025 gets really bad. I just subscribed to your channel. Thanks for the input.

1,3,4 & 5 - Just look at one of the UK Estate Agents' websites, like "Rightmove" to refine your choice between different parts of the UK and to get an idea of size/price/looks. 6,7 - Medical position : you may have to pay some money up front to be allowed to access a General Practitioner at his/her surgery or specialist medical treatment at hospital. But that's no different to many countries. I have friends who moved to Australia but are retired and I think they had to put up £60K as some sort of medical surety. Obviously if you are here and you get a National Insurance Number and get a job, you will be paying NI contributions with the taxes that your employer will automatically deduct from your wages (which goes towards health costs and pensions for the future). But in some parts of the country getting an immediate GP appointment may not be easy "Phone lines will be open at 9am to make appointments for that day...". On the other hand private medical insurance will be readily available and I'm certain much cheaper than in the USA and medication prices are MUCH lower here. I went to see my dentist a few weeks ago (BUPA private dental treatment as many dentists will not take on adults on the NHS unless they are long-standing patients). It cost me £72, I think for the check-up and "polish". So not a fortune. I had a check-up, X-Rays, teeth polishing afterwards etc and one tooth which had lost part of its filling and some of the tooth had dropped off and therefore needed rebuilding, but that was my previous appointment about 9 months ago. That treatment (which was done in two visits) cost me a total of about £300, I think but, to be fair, it had been 15 years since I previously saw the dentist. But the one I saw was so good that I had no hesitation in going back for a check-up 7 months later. Future check ups will be yearly. One Pound Sterling (£ or GBP) is worth $1.26 (USD) at present. There is a Q period for some pets but should go online to check which pets/for how long/what inocculations they'll be expected to have. Probably sounded rather vague, but hopefully that is of some help. There are "regional/national" differences in health provision etc between England, Wales, Scotland & Northern Ireland but if you have family here or have decided you want to go to one particular part of the UK, health issues will not affect your choice! The NHS covers all the UK. Obviously if you live in the Highlands of Scotland you may have to travel big distances to get to a hospital (eg if you are at Ullapool on the NW Coast, you'll have to drive 57ish miles to Inverness on the NE Coast of Scotland, but if you live in a city like Edinburgh, Inverness, Perth, Glasgow etc, your hospital will be on your doorstep (figuratively speaking). OK?

Thanks so much for following along! You got a great answer already, but we’ll add to it! We have one home tour available already, but we’ve done a lot to the house since then. You can expect an updated home tour in December! Room sizes are generally smaller than those we had in the states in CA, GA, and ID. We like the cozy feel, and it means easier to heat in the cold months. Gardens will vary significantly depending on the location you choose. Using Rightmove as mentioned or ESPC will give you more insight on what you can get for your budget. One of the biggest hurdles is navigating the visa process. You might already have your route planned, but Americans are only able to visit for up to 6 months before they have to leave. During this time, they cannot work if visiting. To legally live in the UK, there are many options for visas on uk.gov but you’re probably already aware of that. For my family visa (spouse visa), I am legally able to reside and work across the UK for 2.5 years. Then, I will have to reapply. At the time of the application, you will pay up front for your NHS medical coverage for that 2.5 years (£1,035 per year of the visa if that’s still the current number). Hope this helps! ❤️

About Scottish/American accents, if you know of the Glasgow 1967 born actor John Barrowman, he was the lead in sci-fi tv series ‘Torchwood’ and Doctor Who, Barrowman moved to the USA aged 8, became the all American male, when he appears at events in Scotland he drops from his American voice unconsciously to his original Glasgow accent., amazing to hear.

Great video as always. I suppose it really depends in where you live in Scotland, like where you's are, it's a bit more quiet as it looks more of the countryside, whereas, in the heart of Glasgow you've got all the busy traffic and stuff. But I can certainly more than understand, places like New York as an example take ads to a whole other level and can imagine California being a bit similar. And as for the ordering stuff, there are the odd places here that are open 24-7, but I get where you're coming from, in the U.S. it's probably on another level, and even if you were needing anything, you wouldn't have to wait long for deliveries or going out and getting anything. It's typically just the wee towns where shops aren't open as late as what you'd see in the main cities, like Glasgow. The main thing is, you's were able to settle and are happy, moving can be quite a stressful thing and your transition went well and your friends and family have all been supportive and you's still get to see them and keep contact. 🙂👍
@SimpleScottishLivingАй бұрын
Yes, we are definitely more small town people than big city. We had our time, when we were newly married, and lived in midtown Atlanta, which was a lot of fun. Yes, the delivery and shops being open is definitely on another level in the US. Doughnut shops open at 4am, grocery stores closing at 11pm at the earliest, and the Amazon deliveries, if you are in a big city, can be same day! Thankfully, nowadays we don't need any of that stuff so the slower pace suits us just right!

First off TV show recommendations, given Annie’s other favourites, you need to watch Grand Designs which is a Channel 4 show that has been running for years. Scotland’s Home of the Year is on BBC Scotland is worth watching too. Accent wise having done the whole transatlantic couple settling in the UK twenty five years ago the accent changes are interesting, and it changes with kids. So before we had kids going back across the pond my wife’s accent would shift to being much more Canadian, but that changed once we had kids in that her accent had to stay fairly British for the kids to understand her. What you’ll probably find is all the North American friends think you sound British, and all the British people will think you sound North American! Incidentally, catching up with your older videos, Zach’s accent has noticeably shifted in the six months, so maybe the “he’s not Scottish” comments will die down. 🤞🏻

I was born and brought up in Glasgow by Highland parents so I never had a strong Glasgow accent but still distinctly Scottish, . I’ve since lived in 5 other countries with now 20 years in the US and became a citizen this year. I have not lost my accent and probably never will now. You have to use different words, e.g. pavement means opposite things in the UK and US. Pavement is the road surface in the US. I still get compliments on my Scottish accent at least once a week so that’s not bad! I discovered your channel recently after the US election and I began thinking about moving back to Scotland. As a Scot with 35 years in the US I can confirm that intelligibility is an issue. Part of it is accent, part of it is how quickly we tend to speak. I found I had to make a real effort to slow down and enunciate to make myself understood. These days Americans tend to think I sound Canadian, (eh). And I recently met a Canadian who looked at me all knowingly and asked: “what part of the Ottawa Valley are you from?”
