Hummingbirds have captured my complete attention. They are fascinating and beautiful!

They are actually bold little things. The middle bedroom in my house is full of plants, pools, aquariums, and the like. Well, I leave the window open for air-exchange. I do have feeders hanging in the window, but the little guy's will fly right into the house. There are a countless variety of small insects that I've taken to deliberately encouraging. I cannot believe how familiar they are with me. I do know that they are easily encouraged to alight upon your hand. It's so cute to see them buzzing around two inches off the floor, grabbing mosquitoes, fruit flies, and I've no idea what else. I just love having them. Thier tiny little nests are something to behold. Mom is quite fearless, and it's gotten her into trouble on more than one occasion; but not on my watch ! I've seen the most incredibly beautiful hummers pass through. Some are so tiny-weeny they don't really look much larger than a honey bee.

How incredibly fortunate for everybody except the bugs! Had 10 feeding stations in the back yard and 6 in the front. None of them ever sat on my hands tho' as they were all too busy defending their own sugar water bottle. Bad ass little birds; they all dive-bombed my ears tho'. They tolerated other birds but did not like yellow birds for some reason and would gang up to chase them away - even tho' the yellow birds tried to ignore them. Birds are just as funny as people. If you put 4 bird baths in a circle and one in the center, they all play musical chairs constantly - ha!

I awoke to a Anna’s humming bird, stunned, on the ground right at my window one morning. His bright pink face looking up at me was impossible to miss!! I’d rescued one as a child before so I knew how to care for him, but I guess he really had it rough because unlike last time where a couple spoons of “nectar” and a good 15-30 minute rest under my care was enough to get going, this Guy wouldn’t budge. For hours. I thought his wing maybe was hurt, but it was hard to tell. And then it was late. I took him in, in a nice warm box & fed him all night until the local wildlife center opened up & I could pass him to the doctors. Looking back I realize I should have brought him to the doctors in those first few hours, because his body works so fast timely & informed care is critical. he surely needed to be eating more bugs than sugar water... my guilt aside, though it was very small I feel shaped by that experience. I see these Anna’s in my yard so often but it was really something to be the one this delicate, beautiful animal was trusting for a period of time & to see his beauty slowed down. & I believe I see him back in my yard sometimes :p
