It's popularity had 2 sides, both depended on the idea that it was real and he was really like that. In some people's eyes, he was brave and that was his war cry. In others', he was incredibly stupid and wreckless.

As soon as Leroy shouted and ran in, a smile just instantly appeared on my face. That dude deserves all of the recognition he gets from that classic gaming moment. I've also done the rage quitting, smashing up a SNES cartridge with a handy ball pein hammer from my nearby toolkit. (after yanking it clean out of my UK SNES console first, without turning it off. something which was supposedly physically impossible. so that's that myth debunked!) I'll post the game in question as a reply. I challenge people to get it in one guess. It's not what you would think.

1337 speak reminds me of Arby n the Chief, where it reached its peak with the idiotic Chief only using leet speak. And while you mention gamers in the media, thats a good idea for a list; dumbest/worst portrayals of gamers in the media. As recently as Serenity (2019), it depicted a kid who enacts a revenge fantasy on his computer via Mathew McConaughey to kill his stepdad. Not that you would know that from the trailers or marketing, where the film is depicted as a dangerous tropical island for banging and fishing.

Leroy Jenkins was a sketch. First, any raider worth their salt at the time knew how to handle that room. Second, that fact the "raid leader" asked him to calculate survivability is ludicrous. There are so many variables that would go into any attempt at putting a number on that. And how long does it take him to supposedly calculate it? Like 2 seconds. It's cringe that anyone in 2021 still thinks that's real.

Leet speak wasn't just around before the 2000s, it was around before the web and it started with a practical purpose. It worked essentially as a simple substitution cypher that was still human readable but made it difficult to impossible for automated scripts to scan usenet and BBS file library descriptions because it wasn't a formal language and different people would make different substitutions so at the time it made it very hard to build an electronic dictionary for it to auto translate when searching for certain file names or terms. Say for example a law firm trying to run scans for copies of a new game the suspected had been cracked and was being distributed. They couldn't just connect, grab the list of files, and run a word search. Human brains are very good at understanding what a word was supposed to be or mean as long as it still mostly is the same length and either the ending or ending are the same even if the middle is badly mangled rather by typos or by somebody using stuff like leet speak with number and phonetic substitutions or rhymes etc...

When it comes time to choose, then it will be down to whichever one has the better games. If I had to make that choice today, then it would be PS5 for Demon's Souls.
