There is a freshwater version of the stonefish found in nsw and lower qld streams etc. My uncle stepped on one as a 16 yr old and his brothers had to hold him down and rub pipe tobacco remainder on it. Don’t know if that helped though but that was the treatment. My 5yr old son also stood on one at a weir and the amount of anaesthetic the hospital pumped into his foot was amazing and then they had to massage it for 15mins because his foot went white from lack of circulation. Bloody horrible, the screaming and pain.

As a Californian, I find it funny when people here talk about Australia’s venomous animals, when we got the Tarantula Hawk, which has the most painful sting of any animal

Picked up a tracksuit top back in 1998, and a Redback, bit me 4 times. After 4 hours my glands all swelled and it put me on my arse for a week. Weird thing was that an area about the size of a 50cent piece, around every bite location, went like Goosebumps and couldn't be washed for about 2 weeks. Soapy water literally beaded on my skin, away from the areas.

I get your point on the animals being not so dangerous. But maybe if they don't kill so much people it's because people are very careful. For example, wouldn't there be more fatalities if more people were OK to go swim in the sea or in rivers?

If you have timber garden fences you will find red backs. A neighbour of mine was bitten so many times he was basically imune to them. I encountersd a blue ring octupus in a rock pool next to a popular beach when I was about 10yo. Told by a local to not touch it could kill me. A neiighbours wife had a close encounter of a salt water croc kind. Husband pulled her away from the waters edge. Pointed to the water 3ft from her. Think of the scene in Crocodile Dundee. They eat people but like our deadly snakes they are protected. When they renovated the St James Cathedral in Sydney last century they uncovered a colonial erra grave site. A list of all the graves is on line on the Sydney Town Hall web site.. The number of adults and CHILDRED who died of snake bite is significant. No anti venom then. Sydney was ALL bush

A lot of these animals are not endemic only to Australia, and aside from snakes and spiders are pretty much found only in the tropics or the water.. I am not sure why there is such fear about Australian animals.

@@AussieEnglishPodcast No, the poster is 100% correct. Just look at the kooka - it may try to look innocent, but you can see the glint in its eyes at the damage it's going to do to you. It's not just dangerous, it enjoys inflicting harm on humans.

Unless youre teasing. Are you teasing? Otherwise nope. Not in the least bit dangerous. Unless youre cooking outside. Then youre likely to lose a sausage bacon. Sometimes straight off the hotplate.
