@@missymurder1602 Whoa, that's a bomb ass movie title! The movie sounds pretty shitty though: A schizophrenic man who believes he is Jesus kidnaps women who refuse to believe his delusion He videotapes himself with these women he has tied up in various states of bondage. He sends videotapes to the media labeled "Gospels of Blood," which are just photographs of naked women in bondage, usually crucified in some way, with the camera panning and zooming over the photos. These photographs account for more than half of the running time. There is no diegetic sound, only a few title cards, although there is a soundtrack of heavy metal music.

As a horror lover, and a rape victim, it makes me feel extremely uneasy seeing sexual violence in movies, particularly when it doesn't add anything to the story and is for shock value only. It feels like a such a cheap "thrill", and an incredibly overused one. This video legit made me feel seen and less alone 💞

I think because of 2 factors Horror can be very divisive or diverse. 1st horror is largely a personal taste thing, people get scared by different things which other may find laughable 2nd possibly because of the wide range of fears its possibly the only genre which has a large amount of sub genres. I’m 58 years, and a long time horror / disturbing / weird / “it’s so bad, it’s good” fan. (This is how I describe them). TWO movies that mentally destroyed me: House (1977). This movie tore my soul apart, because it defies category, and this mentally broke me. You can say it’s an experiential film, but you’d be wrong. The problem with this movie, is that it is not of this universe. It exists outside of it, where the laws of physics does not exist. Birdemic. This POS supposed “it’s so bad, it’s good” is endlessly frustrating because it is so bad, it’s SO VERY BAD, it hurts the mind. I wanted to rip my eyes out with a warm spoon after bravely watching this garbage. Everything else...I get it. Dirty, disgusting, filthy, profoundly disturbing...no problem, I understand. Ask me to watch House and Birdemic as q double feature, and I’d rather get a rope and a stool. Peace! ✌️

I’m a woman who sometimes likes more extreme/shocking horror, including some of these movies, partly out of pure curiosity over the limits of art, and partly because it helps me deal with some of my anxieties and traumas in a controlled setting. BUT there’s absolutely no reason to say somebody HAS to like these movies or they’re not a real horror fan. Everyone has different boundaries and preferences. It’s fine and healthy to avoid things that make you uncomfortable! Like you said, we all like different things. Gate keeping over who’s a “real” fan of anything is the worst.

There's two things to remember here. At the time there was this push for film makers to push the limits of what art was, they wanted to see what they could get away with. This is why all those stories of directors and film makers being arrested and all these court cases, happened in the 60s and 70s and not in the 90s. I definitely would not equate it to your modern edgy internet person, as there was legitimate art and government issues at the core of of all of this that we had to sort out.... hummm.... then again i guess we could say that about the internet as well given that there are notable and notably large, groups who are pushing for the concept of the first amendment being applied to major social media platforms (and i actually agree with that). But... Meh, whatever. Second, the animal cruelty thing, this was a very different time. Animal rights had really just started to catch hold and most people were not overly concerned with a turtle being killed on film. I was partially raised by a grandfather who had a farm and while i did not like how unnecessary the killing was (that could be argued though) i definitely didnt have a guttural reaction to the killing itself. After the 60s and 70s, when we get into the gore and exploitation of the 2000s.... yah, i guess you could say people are doing it just to be doing it, whatever. Its not my cup of tea but i guess it holds its place in film.
@undergrounddojokeyboardcag701

@@jasonramos1233 You know what? Im going to point something out here and as i said in my last post, these exploitation and super realistic gore movies are not something i really care for. Ive seen hundreds of them but i pretty much stopped watching them quite a while ago. I will quote something i hear from Jay on Red Letter Media all the time.... those movies you're saying are so horrible and terrible... you remember them. You probably don't even remember the last 10 movies you watched. If you watched 3 movies last week, im betting you barely, of at all, remember details of those 3 movies. But you'll remember that one time you saw AntiChrist 12 years ago. You'll remember Serbian Film, even though you saw it half drunk, 10 years ago. And you'll definitely remember Cannibal Holocaust even though you saw it one time, in 1993.

The only movie I've ever seen where the sexual assault was very graphic and gratuitous but also was very crucial to the whole message and point of the movie was Irreversible. As a gay SA victim, I appreciated the film for putting you in the shoes of the victim and their loved ones, instead of just throwing it in for a graphic reaction. Its a very powerful and super disturbing film, but it has a very strong and important message. Edit: I really enjoyed Antichrist, even though the genital mutilation scenes were very hard to stomach. It's a film with a vague and complex lore around it, and Lars Von Trier always seems to make his films feel like completely different worlds even though they are set in our timeline, on Earth. I feel kinda weird now knowing I have seen every single film on this list minus the last one, the last one was made with zero substance or message it is solely for getting a shocked and repulsive reaction out of it viewers. I actually enjoyed a few of them lol. I can enjoy a disturbing movie as long as I don't find it pointless, or I don't feel as though they are just making a film for shock value. Films like Antichrist, Irreversible, and Salo have scenes where the directors intended to get a visceral and shocked and disgusted response from the viewers but they also have deeper meanings in the film and the graphic scenes progress and push the plot and the ideas the director and film are trying to get across. With Irreversible, I cried watching the scene where Alex is assaulted because it places the audience in her position of powerlessness and shock and pain. Irreversible proves to be both a scathing condemnation of how films have pornographically depicted violence against women and gay men and in turn, how our culture sexualizes women and victim-blames them when they are subjected to cruel acts at the hands of men. Or that's how I interpreted the film personally, and why I do place it very high on my favorite films I've watched. I can't even begin to make an entire commentary on Antichrist or this already massive comment will be even longer, there's so themes and ideas happening in it. It's almost too busy, but somehow it pulls it together into an unforgettable cinema experience, though I could have gone without the scissor scene. (Even though it also has a meaning to tie in with the plot and commentary Von Trier is presenting) One of the main questions Von Trier presents within the film is, "Is there anything more frightening than the idea that mothers may wish to commit infanticide?" That's just one of the many things happening inside that film. Its super deep and analytic almost, that I can completely understand why it is a massively polarizing film and why some people will never like it. Salo is basically a political statement about the power struggle that was happening in Italy during the 1940s. The film explores themes of political corruption, consumerism, authoritarianism, nihilism, morality, capitalism, totalitarianism, sadism, sexuality, and fascism. Once again, another film that can be broken down and studied and interpreted in various ways. TLDR: Basically what I'm saying is that even though these films contain various scenes of SA and graphic violence and subject matter, they aren't meaningless, to me anyways. I found strong messages and themes in all of them, being a SA victim and a gay man, they struck various nerves in me that made me appreciate them, hard to watch as they may be. I'm not advocating them in any way, since I know many people will still be triggered or upset by them and completely respect their opinions and distaste of them, I just wanted to explain their meanings to people who may read this that have no desire whatsoever to watch them. :)

I do however see the appeal of the "realistic" horror movies like Megan is Missing, I think because it's so real it is that much more effective. But there is a line to it, I think it is only good if it's written well and not just played out for shock value. There are good ways and bad ways to tell stories and if a story must include SA and torture I think it should be written properly.

Alot of extreme horror fans don't like this movie because it purposely doesn't show alot of gore and doesn't contain any nudity when the female actress is in a comprising situation. It also gets flack for being long and a bit boring, but the whole point is to say "why would you want to see that? Why do you want to see her in this awful situation? Why do you want to see this family suffer? Why are you watching this?". Personally, I think it's one of the best thriller movies I've seen because it actually creeped me out and left me thinking after I turned it off, instead of relying on shock value and cheap jumpscares.

Unfortunately a lot of men have this kind of fetish and that is why they like those scenes. It's really sick and in a bad way. It's been fetishized in film for a long time. When people call it "rape culture" it isn't just being imagined when it's all through the movies and fetishized teaching new generations to fetishize rape which is an act of violence.
@OKHolly

I absolutely agree with you! I believe that you do not need to have these scenes in order to demonstrate someone's evil and cruelty, or to help the audience understand the victim's trauma. A good writer would be able to do this effectively without resorting to such a horrifying tactic. Anyone who includes these scenes is just a bad, lazy writer, in my opinion.
@Drayton-tv1tz
@Drayton-tv1tz 2 жыл бұрын
In some cases, I would completely agree in that matter. Films that have explicit rape scenes that are just unnecessary and most of the time they are just trying to win over the title for most disturbing film. However, I would completely disagree if we were talking about Irreversible a film that includes a revolting rape scene that lasts pretty long but, in that film, it's a bit different understanding how it approaches these aspects of rape and the unrepairable events that occur afterwards. It's a film that's notorious for that one scene but it's used in such an implanting tone that no other film at that time was willing to extend (especially on topics that are so traumatic). Irreversible's talented director and flipped chronological order on how these events come to be is why I believe that despite it being probably one of the hardest films to watch it stands as probably one of the most important as well.
@Drayton-tv1tz
@Drayton-tv1tz 2 жыл бұрын
@@OKHolly Again it really just depends on the certain film being talked about in this scenario. Films like Serbian Film is pointless and cheap. However, if you exclude any of these horrifying tactics, especially on films that must depict it in such a fashion in order to get your attention, then you are just a film that's empty and devoid of any real memorability or earnestly. It's not necessarily that they are a bad writer but depending on what film you're talking about it could be the case.

Also, The Girl Next Door is *really* not worth it for other reasons than its disturbing content. You see, Jack Ketchum heard the story of Sylvia Likens (the girl who was tortured to death by her caregiver, her kids, and their friends) and thought it would a good story for a novel. He approached Sylvia’s sister, Jenny, to ask her permission to write and publish the novel as long as he changed the names. Jenny said no because she did not want to relive the trauma of watching her sister being tortured and she didn’t want her sister to be remembered in that way. Did Mr. Ketchum respect her wishes? Nope, he went ahead and did it anyway! He also went out of his way to embellish the story to make it even more gruesome and disturbing, going as far as adding a rape scene and molestation subplot that did not happen, purely for shock value. Basically, The Girl Next Door just exploits the very real torture of a very real girl and I regret watching it after learning what I know now.

I went through a phase where I was all about the exploitation and extreme cinema, and those two movies were the ones that made me feel bad about myself as a person for having watched them for days afterwards. "Irreversible" is by far Noe's most brutal movie - I actually quite enjoyed "Love". "I Stand Alone" was meh - nowhere near as upsetting as "Irreversible", but not pleasant either. "Mordum" and all related August Underground movies, I highly recommend you avoid. Just, nope. I'd also recommend staying away from a lot of Japanese exploitation flicks like the Guinea Pig series (I won't watch those myself), Men Behind the Sun (real animal death/cruelty), Philosophy of a Knife, etc. Nothing wrong with having boundaries; you've clearly seen some stuff, and you know what isn't worth your time or energy or sanity to watch!

I'm fed up of wannabe "hardcore horror fans" contest, aka "duh! that wasn't even scary I yawned lol". Entertainment isn't a contest, boundaries are personal and to be taken seriously, and as long as someone enjoy horror movies, whatever subgender it is, they are horror fans. Full stop.

Never really a fan of the “Cannibal“ movies because of the not so subtle racism behind them, but yeah the animal death is definitely a line.

Honestly. Oftentimes i find myself routing for the cannibals for killing the racists, who also frequently have big colonizer vibes.

I'm usually extremely and deeply bothered by movies regarding cannibalism to the point I can't eat any kind of meat for a bit, but the racism also not a very nice aspect of the films either (granted most of the movies I've seen in passing on the topic had white people as the cannibals, but then again I avoid most of the movies that blatantly tried to get a piece of the controversial success pie that Cannibal Holocaust started). And also the animal cruelty. I've seen a few movies with real animal cruelty on camera and it made them go from just laughably bad to legit horrible.

I cannot watch or tolerate seeing sexual or violent abuse to men, women, or children in movies and any form of animal cruelty or abuse. These are my cut offs in a film. If I see it I have to turn it off.

Also avoid a movie called "The Tree of the Wooden Clogs" (1978). A live pig is butchered, and it's horrible to watch.

this honestly reminded me that there is a line between being disturbed and being disturbed to the point you are no longer entertained. I tend to forget that a lot and push myself into watching movies that I shouldn't. I made myself watch Megan Is Missing because so many horror fans were telling me I needed to. I hated that movie, I watched it like five years ago now and I can still remember the entire last part of the movie with excruciating detail, I'll remember parts of it out of nowhere and be on edge for hours. I knew going into it I shouldn't watch the movie but I did because "being uncomfortable is the point of the genre". It isn't, not when it isn't fun anymore

in the end, isnt the point of a movie to be in some way entertaining? if a movie leaves me feeling horrible and crosses my boundaries, possibly even going as far as traumatising me, that's not in any way an enjoyable expereince. I want to be scared and freaked out, yes, but why would i force myself to watch something that I might regret watching just to 'earn' a label of fan or whatever

Boundaries is so healthy, especially when it comes to leisure and hobby time which should be completely about unpressured personal choice. Thank you for speaking about people demanding we are “horror-fan-enough” for them- everything seems to turn into a competition!

And you're right about Eden Lake, I saw that movie years ago, & i remember it being an incredibly difficult movie to watch. I LOVE Martyrs. It's one of my favorite movies of all time. But, oh boy, I'm NEVER watching it again. 1- because I don't want to ruin the first watching experience and 2- damn it traumatized me hahaha. It sent me back to my depressive thoughts thinking about the meaninglessness of life and all that. This type of movie is actually very dangerous, I mean, it COULD lead someone closer to suicide if they're already suicidal. It's too real. Anyway, I hate gatekeepers in this community (or in general), they have a complete disregard to other people's mental wellbeing.
