Steve Blackman, Ken Shamrock, and Dan Severn are legit badasses. Especially Dan when the producers wanted to force on him a gimmick he didn't like, he calmly threatened them that he would legitimately break every wrestler that they would throw at him and "turn fantasy into reality". @Juji-Gatame I’m talking about these fighters in their “primes.”
@Scorch1028
@Scorch1028 2 жыл бұрын
@Juji-Gatame Let's talk about Brock Lesnar's P.E.D. abuse, which is "cheating." How many times was Severn caught doping? None. I rest my case. Severn is the overall better fighter -- definitely for his era, and I would say even in his prime. When you look at how well the 39-year-old Dan Severn held his own against the 32-year-old Mark Coleman (despite losing to Coleman), that gives you some sense of how skilled Severn was in his prime. Lesnar has relied more on his size and strength than his skill -- and when that began to fail him -- he took P.E.D.s. A week before his fight against Mark Hunt, Lesnar "ridiculed" Jon Jones for testing positive for P.E.D.s, even though Lesnar himself was actively doping at the time he made that statement. Severn began competing in MMA at age 36, and his record is 101 wins, 19 loses, and 7 draws. Lesnar began MMA at age 29. His MMA fight record is 5 wins, 3 losses, and 1 overturned victory (disqualification) for doping. Overall, Severn has a more impressive "legacy" in the sport than Lesnar does. Lesnar didn't have enough fights to really "prove himself" as one of the all-time greats. Severn did.

I saw Haku walking into my HS gym when I was about 12. I was at soccer practice right outside the gym and my stupid 18 year old soccer coach yelled “it’s fake”. My father is the same size as haku if you went by height and weight. But haku was scary looking big with a chest that looked like over inflated monster truck tires. He looked like he was about to fight my stupid soccer coach. Luckily both of them stayed in their lanes and Haku only intimidated the idiot and the soccer team. He was so much more scary in person. On the other hand Rene Goulet was at the same event and friends of mine met and played tennis with him, he turned out to be a really friendly guy who interacted with locals who were not even wrestling fans. I wish I met him even though he was a jobber on the down side of his career at this point. We would sometimes get a UHF channel from Quebec/ Montreal in French.. or maybe it was a French speaking Toronto station (who knows) and though it was in French I would watch wrestling on that station and Rene Goulet would be on every week on that station. Ok I got off topic, just remembering my childhood wrestling memories from when I lived in Rural NY state.

Honorable mentions: Mike Rotunda was NCAA Division I EIWA champion in the heavyweight wrestling division, and a starter on the football team for Syracuse. He has consistently been mentioned as both one of the nicest, and tough, wrestlers of his era. Raymond Rougeau was a two-time Golden Gloves boxing champion. Both are quite, nice guys, but, according to Jim Ross, could kick anyone's ass. If you look at the Varsity Club of the late 1980s, with Rotunda, Steve Williams and Rick Steiner, you see the rare occurrence of a team of true badasses.

@Truth Seeker So Lesnar is the "tougher" guy because "he did it for his family"? Sorry but that's not what the list was about. It's been said by MANY wrestlers who worked backstage with Lesnar that he was a straight up dick and when he finally got himself into a scenario that would turn ugly he backed down. Rick Rude was KNOWN to get into those kinds of situations AND come out on top of them. Doesn't matter if he had a family he was doing it for or not. I give Lesnar credit for his UFC work. He is "tough" just not the kind of tough that should go on this list.

He got a blackbelt in under 2 years apparently. While I have no doubt he's a great grappler IRL, and obviously a very large and scary individual, you cannot earn a blackbelt in 2 years, period. The fact that he got it under a Gracie is especially disgusting because it's just watering down what used to a great name. Just for example, it took me 3 years to make blue belt, and even then I felt like it was too early and I wasn't good enough. For comparison sake: Famously young and badass dude BJ Penn took 3 and a half or so years to get to black belt (and rightfully earned the name THE PRODIGY cause it was so unheard of). He was the first ever BJJ world champ that wasn't brazilian, that's how good he was to get blackbelt that fast. Joe Rogan, a dude with a day job that has even more free time than Undertaker started BJJ in 1996 under Machado (according to a video of his I just watched) and got his black belt from Jean Jacques in 2012. And you're gonna tell me a 40 some year old man with basically zero free time earned it in two years? Nah.

A lot of old time wrestlers say Andre The Giant was a legitimate tough guy in his prime that's why he earned the locker room nickname "boss". Also others have said Bob Backlund, Harley Race, Bad News Brown (Allen Coage), Bob Orton Jr, Terry Funk and many others were as well. Maybe they should have made two lists for this because MMA wasn't around years ago one from the modern era and one from the old school era where being a tough guy was determined in the bar and by your fellow wrestlers that challenged you.
