When I saw this video's title, I started imagining the rant I'd leave in the comments if "The Seven Samurai" wasn't on your list. The ending of that movie just destroyed me. It made me cry the first time I saw it, and decades later, it can still put a lump in my throat. That ending is the distilled essence of tragedy.

'A Simple Plan' is loosely based on a segment of 'The Canterbury Tales', by Geoffrey Chaucer. It's the segment known as 'The Pardoner's Tale', where three men find a horde of gold - proving that 'The love of money is the root of all evil', all three wind up dead.
@SilverSpectre26610 ай бұрын
Might be a stretch but Watchmen. The only real hero of the story, Rorschach, ends up dying, and the villain, Veidt, deploys his plan but it ends up failing in a twist that Rorschach had already mailed evidence of to a news outlet. So while the main villain did end up killing the hero and initiating their plan, it ultimately would come undone at some point.

What about “Burn After Reading”? The ending legit summarizes how every single character failed and then says “So what did we learn here? …I don’t fuckin know either.”

A Simple Plan is sublime. Greatly under rated, indeed. Speaking of Films where everyone loses, you need to put Oliver Stone's U-Turn on the next one of these. Wow, talk about a grimly dark comedy fiasco... I believe he made that right after Natural Born Killers, as it definitely has a similar tonal and stylistic vibe. GREAT performances by Sean Penn, Billy Bob Thornton, Joaquín Phoenix, J-Lo, Nick Nolte, Jon Voight, Claire Danes, Powers Boothe......

He didn't really win in infernal affairs. If you see part 3 it shows the fallout of the whole ordeal. He's still under investigation his wife left him. And the guilt was making him go insane.
@jamespope766910 ай бұрын
He won in part 1. You don't have to see part 3. Godfather Micheal won, then lost in part 3, Darth Vader won and lost in part 3
@deadhead832310 ай бұрын
@jamespope7669 but if you see the ending he doesn't feel like he won. He feels completely lost and the flashback he remembers chan being kicked out of the academy it shows how he wished he could've taken another direction in life. Because now he's a murderer and a dishonorable cop.

I think you kind of just proved that the Joker actually won in TDK
@martinwestern333410 ай бұрын
The Joker didn't lose,he wanted to prove that you can drive someone to madness with one bad day which he proved when Harvey became Two-face and started killing people even going so far as to plan to kill Gordon's son if that's not crazy I don't know what is so the Joker won
@jamespope766910 ай бұрын
Joker wasn't responsible for Harvey's criminal actions. All Joker gave Dent was a push.
@travisstevens243210 ай бұрын
Not quite. The Joker wasn't out to prove that "someone" can be driven to madness with one bad day, he was out to show that "anyone" could be pushed to that point, and that's where he lost. Batman didn't turn, neither did a literal boatload of criminals. Joker only pushed one person past their limit. Just one. Everyone else in the film proved him wrong.

the good guys 'lose' in SEVEN SAMURAI (apart from the majority of them being killed) in that their way of life means they gain no advantage from their victory, while their employers are saved. It is rather difficult to work out who's a good guy in RAN - there are some - but pretty much everyone loses (the same goes with movies of the actual KING LEAR). Nobody really comes out well in the straight versions of CYRANO DE BERGERAC.
