There are thousands of guitar personalities on KZbin. How do you know who to watch, who gives good advice, and who you should steer clear of?
This list of must-follow guitar geeks includes some teachers, some musical artists, and usually a combination of both. All of their KZbin videos are informative, entertaining, and interesting.
Honestly, one of the filters I used is whether I'd want to hang out with these KZbin guitar personalities. Whether it was their sense of humor, their technical prowess, their approach to learning, or some combination of all of the above, this is my list of the 10 must-follow guitar geeks on KZbin.
These guitar geeks have wisdom to impart, regardless of whether you're just starting your guitar journey or are years into it. I think they're content is incredibly accessible, entertaining, and educational (most of the time!).

Rick Beato is the professor for sure. But you can't leave out Rhett Shull and the Casino Guitars guys. But for shear entertainment there's Greg Koch - the Mansquatch. An amazing guitar player (yes acoustic, too) he is equally hilarious in his presentation. A great resource for turning a less than great day into a celebration of great playing and chuckles galore. Oh, and you might learn something, too.

Driftwood Guitars is quickly becoming one of my favorite channels on YT. It seems like He would tick a few boxes for Acoustic Tuesday and the TAC family (which I hope to join as soon as funds permit). He’s a fantastic luthier, in Florida I believe, and he’s got some good (but heartbreaking) guitar reviews including interior build quality. I would highly recommend for anyone wanting to get into building guitars. Thanks for all the hard work you put into your shows, and I can’t wait to join TAC!

Brandon Acker is a stringed instrument historian who focuses mainly on classical guitar, but can play pretty much anything on guitar. Rob Scallon is also a bit ot a musical instrument historian who explores the guitar and does videos on other musical instruments, like the theorbo with Brandon Acker.

Good show Tony. Thanks for sharing music oriented personalities. Now, it's my turn. The first one is Darrell Braun (from Canada) of Darrell Braun Guitar. Not only is Darrell a great guitarist, but is also a guitar (mostly electric) investigator and bargain hunter. At times, Darrell will take a guitar apart and give close ups of the neck, the frets, and the electrics. Not only does Darrell take them apart, but he plays them in different positions i.e. the bridge, the neck, and combinations with gain, with distortion, and plain old clean. If Darrell had a quote it would be: you don't need a Strat to have Strat. You don't need a Les Paul to have a Les Paul. Darrell specializes in guitars coming under the radar and gives honest opinions of them with your needs in minds. Another favorite of mind is a Britisher: Fil of Pagasus. Fil specializes in giving analysis of music performers (anyone from Jimmie Rodgers, Leo Kottke, Hank Williams, Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, the Moody Blues, the Beatles, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Justin Johnson, and Bing Crosby) and tells you why they're good or great. Fil will not only tell you what they're doing, but will demonstrate on guitar (or voice) how they're doing. Fil is also a very good guitarist. Not only does he give analysis and opinions of what it takes to be good, but gives bios too. One of the most remarkable traits of Fil is his gentle demeanor. You may sit back and say "that person sucks", but you will never hear Fil say it. Fil doesn't know any negative adjectives.

Great show again, Thanks! My Guitar journey started with finding the how to change strings video you made years ago. To build a guitar house you need a solid foundation and for me its TAC/ AT and community. I stop in each day see what is my is challenge to start me off. Playing is now about 90 min. each day and is my time for meditation, relaxation and enjoyment. I like to check out FISHMANS The Riff Rundown with Angela Pritelli. I like her style. I remember, back in the beginning of the NHL season someone I will not mention who made a very bold statement about a newly acquired netminder and his team. I was reminded of this during the Flyers Hawks game. Your should have keep Gritty in the AT show it was bad Karma to remove him......LOL Have a Grateful Day!

My favorite KZbin guitar channel has nothing to do with playing guitar... "Dave's World of Fun Stuff" is all about repairing and maintaining guitars! Dave is a guy who has a simple bench in his basement and goes thru repairs and guitar set-up so that you can learn how to do most of the basics yourself, with a good amount of humor and sarcasm thrown in...

Stitchmethod is a great channel. I'd highly recommend it for the jam band crowd. Tim Pierce Guitar is another good channel imho. As a gear page 5 Watt World is cool. I am pretty sure 5 Watt is a buddy/former student of Ric Beato's when Ric was at Ithaca College. I know you said 3 but I also go to Quail Studios Guitar from time to time as he has some jazz/big band/Count Basie stuff that I love but overlook as a jam band/bluegrass/blues guy. I found him doing lessons for an Ink Spots tune that went big via a recording by Nat King Cole...I Love You For Sentimental Reasons. An older friend from the jazz era keeps me on my toes with Ella/Count videos and songs. There are some great songwriting gems in the old stuff ie keep it simple. Love never goes out of style even in these crazy interesting times.

Incredible channel. Watch you all the time. So inspiring. Thank you. I would love to see you create the top Ten Must-Follow Resonator and Lap Steel Slide Guitar Chanel’s. I’m 76 with arthritis so I’ve sold my fiddle, banjo, and guitars and now I am starting to learn how to play Dobro style lap guitars. I’m sure there are other older people who can’t play string instruments the traditional way because of arthritis in the hands and shoulder but could play a Dobro and Lap steel with a steel or slide in a more comfortable position laying on the lap. Without having a demonstrated appreciation of how amazing the technology is that enabled you to share that thought Jabba, it becomes much easier to appreciate why you've not (yet) mastered the awesome skills of reading the names of the KZbinrs mentioned in this clip, and going to the KZbin page and manually entering them into the search bar yourself. Anyone can sit on their arse and complain, but getting off it and doing something for yourself would quite probably, also bring you some satisfaction and a sense of achievement (& maybe even gratitude for the efforts put into this clip?) far superior to your spelling the word 'entitlement' with one word instead of 5 (eg. I'm not particularly interested in watching those who show off their playing skills as apposed to spending more time teaching. Hard to find a worthy KZbin teacher of guitar, no matter who you endorse. My 2-cents. You say: "He's an awesome guitar player!" Yea - but can he teach? I don't care how good somebody is? Can they teach???

To be fair, many KZbinrs don’t set out to teach nor do they profess to be teachers. Others teach quite well, but you may not gel with their style of teaching. And maybe a handful are downright bad teachers. Overall, it’s unfair of you to make a comment insinuating that all amazing players are only such provided they can teach. That’s an unfair assessment. Think of any other field in the world. Plumbing, archeology, zoology, car repair, etc. Some people are better suited to teaching a blue collar type school and/or at a higher education school. Some teach and work in the field. Does it mean that your licensed electrician is terrible just because he hasn’t taken an education path? Maybe - but in most cases, that’s just not true. I was a higher education mentor/tutor at a major NYC university and on a private basis from 2003-2017 (had to stop to care for an ill mom and then I got ill myself). Do you think all professors are excellent teachers? You would think so with all the education they’ve amassed, the studies they’ve done, the fieldwork they’ve done, etc. The sad truth is that at least 1/3-1/2 of all professors are NOT good teachers. Professors are not required to take any formal education courses for teaching higher education courses, so unless someone has the innate gift for teaching and the skills needed to convey those ideas, it’s like the Wild West out there and the poor students suffer dearly (which then lead them to me) - and no, it’s not just students who may have weaknesses and/or are lacking info that was not covered by other prior courses because I had students with 3.5+ GPA’s coming to see me on a regular basis as well. I had some of those same professors myself for in-person classes when I went to that school. I’ve seen the online courses that are completely in a shambles from both personal and professional experience. In this case, I’ve always held firm that professors should have to take formal education courses for teaching higher education level courses no differently than early childhood through high school level. But in the case of guitar KZbinrs, you’re making a blanket statement that doesn’t even apply to most of them because most dont profess to be teachers and others may be gifted teachers whose styles you don’t prefer. Maybe a handful are attempting to teach and clearly don’t know enough or can’t convey the ideas properly. But to say playing well and teaching guitar are the qualifications to make a KZbinr great is unfair. Nobody is going to those channels to learn - they’re going to enjoy the music, so to speak. It’s fine if you don’t want to do that, but please don’t make it source like those channels are inferior to teaching channels. Also, I’m not sure what you’re looking for from a teacher or where you’re at - but you’re literally saying you can’t find a good teacher on a great teacher’s own channel! And there are hundreds of amazing guitar ed channels. Perhaps you are expecting fully fledged courses, and you’re not going to typically see that on KZbin without going to that instructor’s courses on their websites to pay for the material. Tony is one such example because that’s a source of income for many KZbinrs. I wish I could afford to join his courses, but I can’t because I’m ill and have no income. If you want a free guitar course that’s organized with lessons and objectives (with optional paid features like workbooks and stuff), go to Justin Guitar’s website. Maybe you have the wrong expectation of KZbin and guitar teachers who post some educational content here. KZbin should not be used as a course alone, but rather as a supplement to courses and lessons outside of KZbin. If you ask Tony’s subscribers for channel suggestions about the kind of channel you’d like to supplement your needs/preferences and explain where you’re at and what you’re hoping to achieve, maybe you’ll get some solid advice from others here. 🤔😉
