The old rims were just metal and glass bolted together and it would break after a dunk with more than 650 lbs of force, so in the 1990s they made a backboard that would collapse instead of rip the glass of the hoop, and nobody knows how much it can take before it breaks.

The broken rim at 4:21 was really dangerous... I was in a gym when a guy broke an old brake away rim (without a cover over the bolt and spring mechanism) and when the bolt holding the spring broke both shot off... With the bolt putting a huge dent in the floor then flying up and hitting a 35ft ceiling. And where the spring ended up is anyones guess, but the shrapnel could have easily killed somebody...
