The nice thing about "10 Questions for Atheists" lists is that they pretty succinctly compile a lot of tired, mundane things we regularly hear from theists into a neat list - so deconstructing what's wrong with them can provide atheists a quick reference list for how to respond to various kinds of nonsense. I don't respond to them often (since they're often mostly the same old thing). However, I recently found a video asking questions that, while not by any means new, bring up a few topics I haven't really addressed much, so I thought it would be interesting and hopefully helpful. The guy who does them is annoyingly over-expressive, but if you watch with the right mindset you'll notice that his faces and voices basically serve as exaggerated caricatures of the attitude people have when they come at you with questions like these, so that's kind of neat.
I hate to give attention to small provocateurs like these, but he's already been responded to a few times, and the quality of his channel is such that the exposure he gets from me isn't going to help him in the long run anyway. Here's a link to his video: • 10 Questions For Athei...

Honestly I despise these types of people. Despite what they (claim to) preach, they’re so obnoxiously smug, childish, prejudiced, narrow-minded, disrespectful and prideful, believing they’re morally and intellectually superior to people who don’t share their religious faith. It’s embarrassing. They were indoctrinated to believe that (their version of) God is “obvious” and “you aren’t a REAL Christian” unless you follow their specific version of the religion. Claiming you follow the “real” version of God is meaningless when literally everyone else claims the exact same thing, have no way to objectively prove they have Gods favor, and are constantly arguing on what the nature of God even is. I genuinely do not understand why it is so difficult for these people to comprehend that morals and cultures evolved differently and change over time. In the US alone, slavery, racism, & sexism were considered acceptable and even moral with religious authorities excusing or justifying it. The Bible itself not only never condemns slavery, IT INSTRUCTS SLAVE OWNERS ON HOW TO TREAT THEIR SLAVES & THAT BEATING THEM IS OK AS LONG AS IT DOESNT KILL THEM. The churches of the US today are not the same as the churches of even a century ago.

That really get to the point. It may be theoretically possible for questions in this vein to be posed in order for a Christian to learn and have constructive discourse. If apologists start posing questions that aren't already addressed by numerous atheists already, I'll start giving them credit for some intellectual honesty. This guy at least paid lip service towards wanting to see responses. But considering the questions themselves, I'm not convinced he has a sincere interest in learning about atheists, and what they think.

First, I agree with your point overall it is a dumb question. But to be totally pedantic about it, I disagree it's the same as asking "Is a bachelor single?" Because then we have to define "innocent" and "bachelor" because "innocent" can have a lot of different meanings. "Bachelor" has less meanings, and with "single" it implies married, but it could refer to a holder of a degree in certain context. So I am not intending to start an argument...just engaging with the video. His question was a really bad take. Your's is a fine example of another potentially bad take.

It’s more accurate to say “murder is a killing society at large does not approve of” - which makes said killing “wrong” within the context of that society’s value system. Of course, that same killing may be considered justified (and thus not “murder”) in another social context and thus not “wrong” according to that society’s value system.

I'm glad you brought up the "God wouldn't ask me to murder" response when a christian is asked if they would murder if God told them to. I've heard that one quite a few times. Anyone remember that time when God told Abraham to sacrifice his son? Sure, God stopped it before it happened, but the entire point of that story is about being obedient no matter what. Abraham was willing to murder his own son at God's request, and he is considered a hero for it.

God ordered many, many acts of murder throughout The Bible. Saying he wouldn't order them to do such is just willful ignorance on their part, since you don't need to read far into The Bible to see that ordering murder is one of God's favorite activities.

@@danielsnyder2288 Also a good example. I went with Abraham/Isaac because some people like to argue that when Jephthah sacrificed his daughter, he just forced her to be their equivalent of a nun rather than killing her. @@TheCount991 The christian can point out the God didn't tell Jepthah to sacrifice is daughter. Indeed, nothing in the Jepthah story says that God said anything. Note that I have been spreading the revelation of the 7-day cycle proof, given to me by Jesus, in order to leave the naysayers no room to maneuver away from the reality that Jesus has submitted them to the power of His Word, and this should come to no surprise since Scripture states in: (Hebrews 1:3) “He is the radiance of The glory of God and the exact imprint of His nature, and He upholds all things by the power of His word.” Glory to Jesus that He has given me the insight to unfold the meaning of such a powerful statement, allowing me to demonstrate the validity of this passage by the fulfillment of the universal application of the 7-day cycle as His sign of authority over all things.

“…murder of the innocent…” raises two obvious questions. 1. Does that mean that murdering the guilty is okay? 2. Don’t Christian doctrines teach that all humans are guilty by definition? And that is only through forgiveness and relationship with Jesus that we escape punishment. Wouldn’t that mean all murder is ok because no one is really innocent? Okay. Three questions.

I’ll play the apologist here: Christians say we are all _sinners_ not that we are all guilty. However (I’m back to atheist here), both _sin_ and _guilty_ are meaningless without mentioning the actual transgression and its context. And, of course, that only answers #2; your other two still stand. It may seem like I’m being pedantic here, but precise word choice matters in an argument, and I’m trying to make yours better for the next time. Edit: I realize my meaning wasn’t clear; your statement is meaningfully correct, because Christians would be OK if you said “guilty of sin”, but as it is, it isn’t quite what they would say.

"Is murder of the innocent wrong?" Yes. As is murder of the guilty. Murder by definition is the unlawful and premeditated killing of another person. Murdering a guilty person would be a form of vigilantism and thus circumstantial at best as to whether the punishment actually fit the crime. Now if we want to talk killing instead of murder... then I still think that it's more preferable to not kill someone (innocent or guilty) unless they pose an immediate threat to the life or lives of other people, this threat can be removed by killing the threatener, that removal can be done without putting the lives of the threatened in greater danger, and de-escalation of the situation has failed.

It's clear how deeply ignorant this poor bastard actually is. His smug self-satisfacion notwithstanding, several of his questions are malformed, his definitions sloppy & his entire attitude thinking that any of these questions achieve anything at all for either atheists, or christians is asinine. When it comes to unlawful killing, our legal system even recognises that there's a range of culpability. There are concepts like Manslaughter, where injury or death is a clearly foreseeable consequence of an indirect action / lesser crime / neglect / dereliction of duty / etc. (eg: It's nearly certain that driving a motor vehicle while intoxicated will result in poor judgements behind the wheel. Should this crime result in death it would likely be considered Manslaughter.) It also differentiates between preplanned murder (Murder One) & situational murder (Murder Two). There's also Assisting a Suicide & Killing in Self Defence. Basically, moral quandries on topics like Murder aren't as childishly facile as this individual would have us believe. The character of God in the Christian Bible - which he apparently believes represents some sort of 'Perfect' Morality (note that he doesn't know what Objective means) - has commanded both Human Sacrifice, Genocide & Death by Bear Mauling. By even this guy's own (likely influenced by Secular Humanism) Christian standards, the God of the Bible (both the New & especially the Old Testaments) a Mass Murderer (assuming he believes that the Noachian Flood Myth actually happened).

Is it your contention that the law defines the difference between right and wrong? I would argue that it, at best, only approximates the line between right and wrong. It therefore follows that, for some definitions of murder, it is possible to construct hypothetical situations where it is right to commit murder. For example, in a slave state, you might come across a slave owner in the process of torturing his slaves to death. If the only way to make him stop is to kill him, then you have committed murder but he hasn’t under that state’s law.

@Kevin_Williamson

His question #2 is exactly what I would ask of him when he posed question #1. I'd want to know what he means by "objective evil" to understand his question and answer it sufficiently. Question #9 is a tautology. It basically asks if murdering someone is wrong. Yes. Murder is wrong by definition. So it doesn't matter to whom the murder was directed or if someone judged the victim "innocent" by whatever standard. They were murdered. So it was judged to be wrong already by application of the legal term. That aside, I'd ask him what the actual point is in these silly questions. They don't really have anything to do with atheism on the whole. So what useful data will these questions uncover?

kzbin.info/www/bejne/eJS4ZoSeaNF-pbs The Sabbath Challenge: Atheist “prophet” Zod gets possessed by Greta (blah x3) when faced with proof of God. In this video, we will be considering the reactions of these atheists when they are faced with the infallible 7-day cycle proof of Jesus being God, and consequently, sovereign over all creation.

Further, we don't know what, if anything, came before that. I'm no kind of expert, and I can't follow the math involved. The "what if God asked you to murder someone" hits harder for those that think a god must exist so they don't kill people, and should be left out of discussions if there is no other answer than 'no, I will not murder an innocent person" - because it literally shows that "god" has no bearing on it. However, keep in mind there have been countless individuals in the past who literally murdered others "for god" "in gods name" and "because god told them to" - which sounds to me like the issue is a mental disorder, and not a 'god' being - and if there IS some sort of god being telling others to murder innocent people- WHY ON EARTH WOULD YOU WORSHIP IT? People who ask 'would you murder an innocent person" questions need to probably be evaluated by professionals to make sure they are not a danger to themselves or others....

I get the impression that he didn't expect anyone to answer 'No' to any of his questions. For example: 9) Is murder against the innocent wrong? Not always. An innocent action by an innocent being can lead to terrible consiquences. Force, and sometimes extreme violence and murder, can be justified to prevent an innocent action by an innocent individual that will cause extreme harm to other individuals. I would also require the presence of a mind of certain minimal complexity before I would agree a being counts as 'innocent'. Sans such a situation, I would agree it is wrong. And I would justify the latter via the social instinct humans evolved to aid cooperation and survival. I wouldn't be able to function as well or at all as a productive member of society if I was constantly fearing murder all the time.

What is the age of consent according to the Bible? That’s a good question. I’ll honestly have to look into that. 7. I honestly don’t know where every part was found who found it. I don’t know The Bible to be 100% true. 8. What would it take to convince you that some other God was the real God? I would need that God to show themselves to me like the first one did. 9. What would it take to convince you that there is no God? I would have to get my memory erased from like age 17. 10. What is the sum total of reality? "If he is real, why did he not ever once contact me to reassure he's real?"… Well this is it isn't it? The claims of Christianity include the following: God values your prayers… in fact he commands that we pray. God hears our prayers… from every single one of us every time. A more modern claim is that Jesus wants a personal relationship with us. No matter how you define a relationship between living organisms, at a bare minimum they both know each other exists. At any given moment in time, on our planet there are probably several hundred million, up to a billion or more people engaged in praying to their god. Let's say 50% or more of those are praying to the god of the bible. Talk about multi-tasking!… in addition to whatever chores deities have, he/she/it is listening intently to every word each of those persons are saying in prayer… that's some extraordinary bandwidth!… but for some reason, even over the span of a believer's entire lifetime, the god has absolutely nothing to say in response to all these prayers it's hearing. Does that make any sense? How could it be SO IMPORTANT to the god that you not have ANYTHING you can 'hang your hat on' (so to speak) to know it exists… that believing by 'faith' is going to have to be enough? if we were talking about anything else, everyone save for the extremely gullible would view a 'story' like this as an obvious 'con'. Absurd in exactly the same way as being asked to believe Santa Claus in the course of a single evening makes his way into the homes of everyone around the world (via your chimney or some other means) to leave either presents or a lump of coal… and is NEVER seen doing any of this… cuz he's THAT good.

A few years late but here we go with my own answers. 1 - No. 2 - A contradiction on the same level as a married bachelor. 3 - Oh yes I tried. 4 - Scientific inquiry and theories have shown to be reliable time and time again. When they're wrong it'll be science that shows how. So yes I'll keep to the science when explaining anything about the world. 5 - False dichotomy. Christianity could be completely consistent and I could love the concept of it, but the problem is it doesn't seem to match reality. 6 - Obviously no. Take any moral issue and both sides will think themselves as obviously in the right, this wouldn't happen if we all had the same understanding of morality. 7 - Correct answer about what? Assuming we're still talking about morality, there is no correct answer. It's all subjective. That's like asking what is the one correct flavour of ice cream. 8 - "Does the Bible speak for Christians" and "Do Christians represent the Bible" are two different and basically opposite questions. Maybe sort out your thoughts before speaking. 9 - Murder against anyone is wrong in the eyes of the law. Most people, myself included would find murder wrong. Why? Because of this thing called empathy. Why is this even a question when you already asked about objective morals in the first question? 10 - Truth is what conforms with reality. The more a statement is accurate to what reality is, the more true it is. The more it fails to conform to reality, the more false it is.

To the author of "10 Questions for Atheists" 1) No, I do not believe in objective instantiation of anything that is not physical, i.e abstract 2) No, see 1 3) Please define "god" or "Jesus" then I can answer if I've "tried" Jesus. I attended Sunday School at a UK Baptist church until I was 15, for at least 3 of those years I considered myself an atheist. 4) Given the current scientific consensus, how the Universe came to be is a non-sequitur. The universe as we see it started with the "Big Bang" 5) Nothing provided by Christians (as I'm presuming this is where you are coming from) has provided me with any evidence of deific beings, let alone theistic beings. And to extend this beyond your question, to steelman this. I don't believe in any of the religions or gods or views that there is anything in a form of spirit world beyond the physical nature of what we see around us. 6) People have different views of morality. You would need to define "good morality", before I could comment further, but see my answer 1 for further details. 7) That's not a fully formed question. Further details needed. 8) Not a question I can answer, I haven't talked to all Christians, and I've no intention to. Also which version of the Bible? 9) See 1, for a start. As I have pointed out I don't believe in objective morality. If I had to kill one person to save a 100, then perhaps I would. I hope that noone ever has to be killed. There would be so many parameters for if I would consider it wrong or right that it's impossible to ask here. Again see 1 10) Truth is that it is in reality

Ok, so let me try to make a go at the questions. 1. No, objective evil doesn't exist. 2. No. Nor am I interested in "objective evil". 3. However you define "try Jesus", nope. I could never take those ideas seriously. For decades, I had a hard time understanding _that_ some people take them seriously, and even at 62, I still don't really understand _why._ 4. The big bang. Hands down. God is not only a worse explanation, it is not really an explanation at all. It doesn't allow for predictions. 5. Some variants of God-belief are certainly inconsistent, but more important to me is that there is zero evidence for it. 6. Nope, all humans do not understand morality the same way. If you look at different cultures or even just different time periods, that should be glaringly obvious. 7. How can we know who is right ... about what? That question lacks specificity. 8. Does the Bible speak for ... nope. It's a book. It doesn't speak. Even metaphorically, it's written by a lot of different people over a wide range of time, all with different motives, who, frankly, "spoke" for themselves. 9. Murder is wrong _by definition._ It doesn't matter if the victim is innocent. If it weren't wrong, we wouldn't call it murder. Even when it is wrong but not wrong in a particular way, we have other words we use instead of murder. Of course, we sometimes squabble if a particular killing should or should not be regarded as murder. See question 6. 10. Well, there's mathematical/logical truth, that one's pretty much a matter of definition with no connection to the real world. And then there's truth in the real world, which is something science tries to come ever closer to by developing models for how the real world behaves that are useful in predicting same. Here, evidence is king. (What there definitely isn't, as far as I can see, is truth in things like morals, ethics, and so on. Wrong concept.)

So if they were to say that evil *IS* what "runs contrary to the nature of God" then my counter would be, so slavery and murdering innocent babies in fact anyone of a particular group except of course those young virgin girls that I sincerely want to woo into being in love with me is NOT evil?

6:05 Question: have you ever honestly tried - Allah/Mohammed - Vishnu - Papa and Rangi - Shinto - Bahá'í - Jainism - Taoism - Zoroastrianism - Wodan - Odin - Zeus - Waaqeffanna - Iroquois - … etc. ? They're alright!

Hey, Prophet of Zod, I liked your answer to me in the premier. Wish you all the best. I still want to know how you and Logicked would know which of you blinked first in a staring contest given nobody can see your eyes. BTW, never try to out stubborn a cat. You will lose that contest. I tried that once a few months ago, and now that cat insists on getting scratches, and attention from me.

Oooh, another one of these! 1 [2:39]: No. Good and evil are opinions. Even the "common law" types. Being widely agreed upon does not make something objective. 2 [4:53]: Well, if a little indicator showed up in my peripheral vision telling me that something I just did was evil, it would be that. 3 [6:06]: The hell is that supposed to mean? I was raised Christian, if that's what he means. What, was I supposed to go on a date with the guy? 4 [8:10]: Well, the big bang is supported by a substantial amount of evidence along with scientific theories and a shit-ton of math that all fit together very nicely. Essentially, the big bang adds up. God, though? No credible evidence that he's ever done anything. At best, we have anecdotes, at worst, we have hearsay. That's not good enough. 5 [9:19]: Inconsistent? Nah. Do I not like it? Don't really care. If you wanna believe in something that's completely unsubstantiated, that's your business. I just think it's silly. 6 [10:13]: No. Not only do psychopaths exist, but all cultures have different values and all people have different opinions about morality. 7 [12:34]: We can't. All of us are fallible. Objective truth, if it even exists, is inaccessible to us. We perceive the world around us through vibrations in surrounding fluid, electromagnetic radiation (a very narrow band of it, no less), and other phenomena that provide crude (albeit useful) information about our surroundings. Reality, objective reality, would almost certainly be alien to us if not entirely incomprehensible. 8 [14:14]: No. Considering how few of y'all actually study it and how uncomfortable y'all tend to get when pressed on some of its less palatable lessons, I think it's safe to say that most of you put it on a pedestal and leave it there. 9 [16:58]: Objectively? See question 1. In my opinion? Yeah. Life's the only thing we're guaranteed to have, but we don't know how much we've got left. Taking that away (and thus everything else with it since, y'know, death) is about as wrong as you can get. But that's my opinion. A lot of people would agree, but it's my opinion. 10 [18:00]: If an idea works and/or it follows from another idea that works, that's close enough for me. This dood really thinks every word that comes out of his mouth is some kind of gotcha. Absolutely wild.
