@@letsomethingshine Unsurprising. Since God isn't real, what is attributed to God is basically things people tell themselves that God would have told them. It's why the "10 commandments" have a point at times; "Thou Shalt Not Kill" is basically a part of human genetics; killing each other weakens the species. Which is why you see so few animals hunt members of their own species and why even fewer practice cannibalism. I actually grew up going to a Catholic church, and taking Catholic religion classes once a week. However, in my actual household, the philosophy was more universalist. My parents were raised Catholic, but by the time they had kids, they didn't see things as quite so black and white. We didn't even go to church regularly until I was about six and I asked why we didn't go to church like my Evangelical cousins did. My parents thought that as long as I was curious, they ought to present it as an option, but I always remember them emphasizing that no religion had all the answers and that everyone was just trying to explain the mysteries of life as best they could. Now, when I have kids, I plan to raise them secularly. And if they have any cousins to spiritually influence them, those cousins are probably going to be Jewish hippies. (My brother's fiancee is Jewish, my brother is converting before the wedding, and they're both what I would very affectionately call hippies.) I don't regret the religious part of my upbringing, probably because any radical elements in my religious education were tempered by my parents' universalism and humanism.

Would she suggest they lack courage as well? It seems that most people understand the need for some people to conceal their identity - and that calling on people you disagree with to show your identity if you have any courage is just an easy way of dismissing them. I'm still a bit surprised how fast it went from "here's evidence of god... love thy neighbor as thyself," to "you will be sent to HELL for ETERNITY by a just Judge." I wasn't prepared for such fervor, but I think you illustrate how such a defense mechanism takes hold. Looking back, I get the feeling that the person I was talking with was, on some level, looking for a fight (or at least a way to employ this kind of mental combativeness, even if subconsciously), and perhaps even as a way to justify to themselves that this type of response is therefore warranted. Like "aha! You see? This is an attack against me, and as such I should respond in kind, to the fullest extent I have at my disposal!" Never mind the fact that this "attack" was a simple question about the ethics of drowning an entire planet because of a perceived slight, which, now that I think about it in this context, seems a bit ironic.

POZ, some people go to the pastor after church and tell him his sermon was great, Some people put their crock pot on before they go to church, and most christians have been told they're fools for being christian by non christians... I would've thought as a former christian you'd know that.

14:26 Really? There's no middle ground between "He's not worth following" and "He was God incarnate."? "He was a decent guy with generally good ideas." Seems like a perfectly reasonable conclusion.
@KillerOfWhales3 жыл бұрын
The C. S. Lewis claim, which this one probably draws from, as I understand it, is that because Jesus claimed he was God, he was either God or he was delusional. Of course, that assumes that what the Bible claims is true, and delusional people are quite capable of saying reasonable things on occasion, so it’s bullshit anyway
@Ugly_German_Truths3 жыл бұрын
Not every quote attributed by the bible to Jesus of Nazareth is a good idea. And even less of those are unique to the guy's citations.
@SapphWolf3 жыл бұрын
@@Ugly_German_Truths Which is why I used "generally." There's things that Jesus says in the Bible that are harmful, but in general he says things that are at least benign.

Dichotomous thinking, or all-or-nothing thinking, is a common cognitive distortion. This pastor's idea that Jesus is either God incarnate, and therefore couldn't be more deserving of following, or he's not worth following at all is a good example of this.

PoZ brings a unique and nuanced approach to deconstructing christian claims. It helped me tons in me growing out of christian beliefs like those preached by this pastor. I wish I had know sooner than I didnt have yo accept that nonsense as absolute truth. I was raised, like many others, to hold on to the bible and by extension christianity (and somr aspects of judaism) as an unquestionable authority and that God was real and just even though it didn't always make sense. I cant help how I was raised, and I do wish i had seen the light at a earlier age because Im confident my life would have taken a much more liberating path.
