You know, it’s pretty damned great when the words of a song can inspire you to change your experience into a learning experience for others. But when you remember so many years later, and reach out to thank those who made it possible, then it’s plainly clear to see that a very young kid did a whole lot of soul-searching because of this song. You do realize that you weren’t alone. Neither was I. Thank you for recognizing where your strength emerged, but also in knowing that without the tenacity you had inside, no change could have taken place. You made the change and used that change to help others-your daughters are proof. Thanks again!

She is amazing. What I also love about her, as a musician, singer, and fan......is that after 20+ years of playing the same song over and over......she doesn't change it. So many singers get bored and change melodies, which in my mind kills a performance, because the fans want to hear what they know. Fans want to sing along, either out loud or in their heads. The song brings back memories of their youth. The moment the song is changed it kills all of it. Kudos to them for staying true to their music and fans.

The first time I heard her sing this song I don't think I stopped crying for an hour...andevery Every time I heard it after that I still broke down crying. As a survivor of abuse, there is no way to describe the pain you live with all your life. Children of abuse most often find themselves transitioning into domestic abuse situations without even realizing it. The abuse becomes normal and therefore when you go from a parent's physical and emotional abuse to being abused by a partner or spouse you can't see there's anything wrong. It took me years to figure out my self worth and to end the cycle on my own. If the abusers are not willing to admit they did anything wrong it's very hard to break free of it because they can Gaslight you into thinking you're crazy and that what they did or do isn't abuse and they're not hurting you. It's easy to find yourself taking the blame for what someone else does to you when they make it seem as if you hadn't done something to provoke them they wouldn't have hurt you. Many times it also overflows into your own parenting as it passes from generation to generation unchecked. If you know of anyone, child or adult that is being physically or mentally abuse do the right thing and intervene... call the abuse hotline for children and try to speak to your loved one about the abuse they are enduring. Ask them to seek the help they need to escape this prison. Don't let the people you care about be abused.

I love Pat Benetar since she first came out, her amazing voice and the importance of her lyrics..my best friend died a few years ago of cancer..her so called mother beat and brutalized her and her brothers when they were small..she grew up to be a Diamond of an individual; a professional with a strong work ethic, an encouragement to all who know her, a firm believer in Almighty God and His Son Jesus Christ..forgiving where she felt necessary and drove hundreds of miles to say goodbye to all her friends just before she passed..left a legacy of love and inspiration to all of us who were blessed to know her..she loved you Pat Benetar also..Thank you Pat and your Amazing husband for the music; sharing your experience ❤ giving us strength and hope!!!

I laugh because I have to. Been there and back a million times. This is for those who bear scars of childhood....I thank the Lord for the strength and the ability to shake off the past, and turn it into something good. I look forward to nothing but the best this world has to offer. So they say, "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger" I guess that makes me the most powerful person I know...... :-)

Please know you have many strong survivors that support your ability to "shake it off". I know the pain, suffering and long-term effects from abusive people. For myself, the infectious open wounds that were unknowingly apart of my life and behavior can't be shaken off, but I admire your passion to overcome. After 43 yrs of pretending, I was victimized with unspeakable trauma, everything I had forgotten was know front and center, It just hides inside until something breaks the scares that hold all that the mind doesn't understand. At 50+ yrs old I am finally able to talk about my life of abuse. Never to pretend or lie has given me an enormous amount of freedom. Freedom from knowing I was never defective, unloved or deserved what happened. It just happens that I was strong enough to survive it and educated enough to shake off the shame and forgive their violations. This is my opinion about my life only. May God Bless all of us dealing with this, whatever stage of excepting and forgiveness we're at,0

Michelle Osowick-Mullican it took a long time for me to understand and talk about my childhood to other people. I’m 60 now and still think about things that happened then.

@@lumberjack7792 Im glad you can talk about it. I think it helps, hope you find peace in talking. For myself, thinking about it isn't an everyday thing as some of my adult trauma has been but when I do find it passing thorough my mind I pray it's just a passing thought that has made me strong, wise and more aware how much damage it can have behind. I hope one day I can help others by knowing they aren't alone.

When I was 10 we became a "foster family" in a small town. Some of the kids that needed our help were my school mates. They told me stories that they wouldn't tell anyone else. They told me stories that I couldn't even imagine. They told me stories that haunt me to this day. I'm 56 now, THIS SONG TELLS THEIR STORY... and I cry like a fuckin' baby every time I hear it. Thank you so much Pat, - Luka's friend

Have LOVED this song since its release. Even when it came out in 1980, I was 16 and definitely knew and understood what song was about, . Had a decent childhood, but kept up with news even then.

Pat Benetar is a Queen of Rock N Roll. Along with Stevie Nicks, Ann & Nancy Wilson, they paved the way for women to make their mark on musical history. Proving they could indeed Rock with the boys. Pat was lucky to be born with music in her genes. Her mother Millie is a trained opera singer. As fate would have it, her life changed when met Neil Giraldo. Now 30+ years later, Pat & Spyder are STILL going strong. Its hard to believe but Pat celebrated her 60th birthday on 1/10/13. Long Live Rock

This song sums it up for children who were abused I know I was one my dad hated me because he wanted a boy first so he would pinch me when I was a baby threw me agents the couch beat me black and blue till I was 5 then I was told I told the school my dad beats me and I had the marks to prove it ..I was told all of this later because I have suppressed memories of it I'm glad I don't know how I would have turned out if I would have remembered it...thank you Pat for this awareness it happens everyday with children all over and alot of people turn as blind eye but there are people that are angels that care .....

I was a kid in a children's hospital who'd just come out of the recovery room after a 12-hour surgery. I was so doped up in morphine I was barely conscious. All I remembered was rather an attractive woman who fell to her knees, crying. It was Pat Benatar who, out of the blue, came to visit us kids with some presents. And despite warnings from nurses and doctors, she insisted on seeing few of us who'd just undergone surgery - not a pretty sight as we were either doped up or going through withdrawl. I can tell you from experience she's the real deal. She doesn't just sing about kids, or just do lip service. She's a real heartfelt human being. And oh, she also happens to be a kick-ass singer.
