Can’t believe I used to dislike chartreuse colored foliage; I thought they looked sick. Now it’s a plant color I’m drawn to time and time again. It adds so much to a garden. I now have 4 Sunshine Ligustrum thanks to your introduction and hope to add Florida Sunshine Illicium one day.

Great topic, hope you’ll do another one on purple foliage! I’m surprised that a stand out for me is my sprite winterberry Hollys. Their new growth on top is lime green, contrasting their dark green foliage. Planted next to a drift of string theory amsonia, also a lighter green.

My sunshine ligustrum continues to bring me joy. I’ve had it a pot for its second summer but plan to put it in the ground in full sun zone 8 this fall.

@rachelwrenn some of the older leaves turn more a VERY dark green, but it's still growing in 100 degree heat, full afternoon sun. The flowers bracts aren't much, but I have it there for foliage so I cut them off anyway. I have three, 2nd year, one put on 3 ft of growth in the spring. The others are slower, but growing. It's on drip. CA central valley is bone dry this time of year. It takes our 108 degree heat waves no problem. No wilting, and again, still putting on some growth, and the new growth is dark purple

I planted a Florida Sunshine Illicium on the north side of my house last fall (7b), and it is still looking great despite a cooking in a couple hours of afternoon sun. Truly a great plant that you turned me on to. I have some Kaleidoscope Abelia next to Orange Rocket Barberry and they are looking 🔥 right now.

What's still showing off... Ruby Falls redbud, Tiger Eye sumac (just planted last year, we'll see if it becomes aggressive or not), Fothergilla Blue Shadow (love it planted next to some black heuchera), Coral Bark Japanese maple, Summer Wine black ninebark, Age of Gold, Stained Glass, and Guacamole hostas, Acanthus Spinosus Whitewater (similar in coloration to your fatsia), Red Abyssinian Banana (crazy big and beautiful!), Bonfire and Ascot Rainbow euphorbias. Never thought I would like euphorbias, but am enjoying them quite a bit. I think I may have cheated by adding purple-leafed plants, but I love them! (Zone 6B, southeastern PA)

‘Gold Mound’ Duranta is the #1 chartreuse plant that holds up in central FL’s summertime heat. It’s a shame since there’s next to no showcase videos of it online. Up in Asheville, NC I’ve seen some nice ‘Sun King’ Aralia that also look great right now that I haven’t heard talked about on this channel.

I have two touch of gold holly plants that I bought in spring and put in containers. And boy these things are doing awesome!!! I am in zone 6 and plan on putting these in the pots they are in ..into bigger pots in the winter. I hope they make it, because I know they should be a couple of zones lower if they are in containers…

Hi, Jim. Another great video! Thanks for the reminder about Mojo Pittosporum. Gotta find a spot for that. I made notes about some others that are new to me: the illicium, the dwarf holly, and that gorgeous chamaecyparis! I'm envious that you can grow St. John's wort in the SE; it's invasive up here in the Pacific NW. Love your channel. I always learn so much from you.

I added a sunshine ligustrum this spring to a boring area behind my garage because of your recommendations and I have been loving it, I also have a miss lemon abelia on your recommendation and its looking great! Angelina sedum here, zone 7a, is pretty aggressive but it has really pretty flowers right now and its color is great. Also for perennials my spiderwort is doing well in part shade. Love this video!

I really love those spider web fatsia. Those are so cool. I love how the leaves change when they mature. In my garden the standout, although they both flower is Veronica ground cover and lithodora. Neither has flowers on them right now but they always look good no matter how hot it is. The flowers are pretty too but the foliage is so pretty I’m ok if the flowers go away. The Veronica has copper colored stems and green leaves that have a copper tinge to them when it’s really hot outside but in the rest of the year it’s bright green. The lithodora has very dark green foliage all year long but when it flowers those flowers are neon purple drops of color. I cannot take a picture of it that does those flowers justice because they are so brightly neon purple almost glowing.

My show off is a variegated ceanothus that is chartreuse and a lovely dark green. It flowers in spring, but all summer it has been spectacular with just the foliage. It’s been a great plant. I’ve been swooning over your spiders web fatsia for a long time and need to find a spot for one in my garden. PNW 8b.

Sun King aralia, Thunderbolt lonicera, Lemon Lime Nandina, Dolce Apple Twist heuchera, Southern Shield fern, and Coast to Coast hosta are a few of the chartreuse show-offs in my garden right now. My Sunshine ligustrums usually shed their leaves around February or March. This year they waited until May! Weird. They've recovered nicely, though.
