i imagine that james magikarp gets confused so much because it was in a gold pokeball, and shiny karp is gold. also, he at a later point claims mkagikard lay gold eggs. also, the karp salesman does show up multiple times in the anime, and cons james with different cons again, so i think that where "multiple" comes from

I recall there being some Magikarp salesman thing during the Gen III anime that had a (painted) shiny Magikarp... or it might have even been a Feebas painted gold to be a shiny Magikarp. But Idk, I have vague memories of it and Bulbapedia looks to be down atm. Definitely not the Original Series though. A Pokémon I have mistaken for shiny in the past is the golden Sudowoodo from... one of the DP episodes?

In my head canon, Shiny Pokémon carry a gene responsible for their different coloring. Shiny Pokémon that are viviparous, meaning they give birth to live young, have a greater chance of getting that gene. The Pokémon must get two copies of that gene in order to be born shiny. Oviparous Pokémon, meaning they lay eggs, the offspring are generally clones of the parents. They have less of a chance of getting the Shiny gene, and there is actually a small difference in that shiny gene. Mammalian Pokémon, (ie those based upon mammals) are viviparous. Oviparous Pokémon are those who are bird, rock and reptilian based, kind of like our animals. For coat color, there is the term Melanin, which is the name of the pigment responsible for your skin color. Some Pokémon are darker than the breed standard. These Pokémon are melanistic, meaning they have more melanin than normal. True black Pokémon are incredibly rare. Some people think they are just stories. Pokémon lighter than the breed standard are albinistic. They have less melanin than normal. True albino Pokémon are considered nonexistent. Next we have color albinism. These Pokémon are one solid color. These are rare. Next we have environmental colorism. The pink island Pokémon are an example of this. Finally we have sex colorism. This means male and females have different colors. The most well known case is Nidoran. Males are purple while females are blue in color. A shiny male Nidoran, while carrying the shiny gene, also carry an extra X gene. There is a claim that a shiny male once gave birth, but most likely it was just a lighter colored female. Shinies are known to be less robust and are often targets for predator Pokémon due to their different coloring. It’s part of the reason they are rare. The other part is that there’s a high chance of them being stillborn. A lot of prey Pokémon will kill their shiny offspring to prevent predator Pokémon from finding them. Gastrodon’s different coloring may have arisen from predators picking off non shinies, leading to the color change in both areas. This also means their shiny color changed as well. The different shapes arose due to environmental differences. Lots of science, I know.

Tbh i dont think crystal onyx is a shiny, i think its a regional variant. It's only encountered in the orange islands and the big thing about it is that water had no effect on it, meaning it was a different type to regular onyx, likely ice
