About the book tracking: you might really like Storygraph. You can import your goodreads library, it's black woman-owned, and it automatically tracks what genres and moods you read, how much you read (both books and pages). It's super simple and intuitive, the customer support is very responsive, they're constantly improving the product, and you can even use half and quarter stars in your rating.
@seraphina26903 жыл бұрын
yes yes yes! so much nicer to look at and nicer to use - especially the app. bonus: its not owned by amazon.
@Mary-fj4iv3 жыл бұрын
Amazing, I'll check it later.
@RileyEffective3 жыл бұрын
@taevas to contrast it with Goodreads, which is owned by Amazon, obviously... Since a lot of people prefer supporting minorities over supporting Jeff Bezos, it's something worth mentioning.
@RileyEffective3 жыл бұрын
@taevas so I've honestly tried to read up on this. Because even though an individual black person can't speak for everyone, they still have the experience that a white person will lack. But all I've been able to find is that you shouldn't say it as just a trendy thing, but that being labelled as such does help funding (grants and investments) reach those people that are at a disadvantage to begin with. In the case of reading apps, a lot of people felt iffy about using an app owned by Amazon but there was no real alternative available. For a lot of people, that in itself was enough to have people change apps. Then this new app turned out to be owned by a black person, who's also a woman. It could've been as bad as Goodreads, and I still would've switched, because I don't want to support Amazon and am trying to support both small businesses and minorities instead. For me, this was the main reason for switching from Goodreads to Storygraph. I did so when it was still in beta. And then it turned out to also have great features. So I tried to do the work and still didn't find out why it would be wrong. Actively supporting minorities is necessary if you want to counteract the fact that they started off with a disadvantage. But for that to happen they need to be labelled as such. And again, any black woman is not Jeff Bezos. So where do you think I'm wrong? Businesses shouldn't be labelled as such? One shouldn't support a business because of its owner? Minorities don't need to be supported? Supporting Amazon is equal to supporting a black woman?
@RileyEffective3 жыл бұрын
@taevas I literally said that I know I don't know more than black people, and that after you pointing out that it was performative, I tried to look up why it was performative, but could not find anything explaining why it would be wrong what I did. Then I explained why I chose to include the label "black woman owned" in my original comment and I said that I honestly don't understand what I'm doing wrong here and what the exact point I'm doing wrong is. So I said I didn't know better, tried to look it up myself, then asked for clarification because I still don't get it and apparently doing that in itself is also performative? I'm honestly trying to understand, but I'm guessing you expect people in KZbin comments to look for debates, not answers. Because I don't know why you would otherwise be so antagonistic to someone who's actually trying their best to understand.

I completely agree about the notion and paper bullet journaling. As a person who isn’t really a planner and who isn’t really organised and consistent it’s just too overwhelming and complicated... I used to spend hours to fill in my Notion and create an “aesthetic” Notion page but ended up not getting anything done lol so my initial purpose of using Notion to be productive is just actually keeping me away from be productive... but yea, it’s pretty great for work, wishlist and for financial management (it’s only my personal preference tho)

I debated about getting an ipad and apple pencil for yearsssss. I have previously been known for being very passionate about how I was NEVER getting an ipad...but then apple pencil came. I held on, but then I started Uni. As a humanities student 85% of my work is just reading long af pdfs and annotating them/ trying to figure out what my takeaway should be. After a semester of doing this on my laptop I decided to get an ipad and OH MY GOD it changed my life. Like it just makes scribbling/drawing and annotating PDFs SO much easier (at least the way I prefer to do it), being able to "change screens" during my workday and yes, sometimes being able to read in my couch is just really nice! BUT for me it's an add on tool to my computer. I would never write my papers or "sentence notes" on my ipad. That's for my computer.

Hi! I’m here to comment about the bullet journaling controversy! I have been bullet journaling for about a year now and I just have to say it has been a godsend. Originally, I was obsessed with making it look perfect - like most people - and I eventually realized that my bujo was for me, not others. I simplified and went back to the original system. I still drew little doodles and patterns but nothing was overly complicated... Also, I realized that if it didn’t work for me in the end, that was ok. Eventually, I came to the conclusion that bujoing actually was helpful without all of the extra flare. I would highly recommend you give it another try! Here are some of my best tips: 1. Use only 1 or 2 colors per month -> this was really helpful. I originally used like 6 colors and it would make me nauseous just looking at it. 2. Keep a future log! -> I have seen so many bujo youtubers not use some form of future log and I found it so bizarre! 3. Stick to the basics -> bullet journaling can seem super intimidating because of its complex spreads... using simple spreads or ones that make sense to you can make it so much easier!

Wooow, thank you very much for this video! I'm a long time subscriber of Rowena and have just discovered your channel via your collab. I've been trying so hard to make Notion work for me, because of how it seems to work for every single person on the youtube space, and similarly to you, I felt like, yes, it does look aesthetic and super organized, but it also requires a lot of time to set up those databases, layouts, etc. and to maintain them! You really opened my eyes on the fact that it's ok to ditch Notion if it stresses you out more than it helps you. Also, i've been recently swayed into getting an iPad because, once again, of how it seems to simply the lives of so many people on the web, but, aside from the financial cost, I have not thought of a mental stress having a whole new device can cause, which you mentioned and with which I 100% agree. So, a huge thank you, Beatrice, for bringing up those points. I needed to hear them!

Aw thank you so much so glad to have you here! I just started using it for work, like Rowena and I talked about, and I feel like one of the reasons (at least for me) that it seems to work for THAT purpose, is that I use it collaboratively. My assistant and I NEED to update it in order to know what's going on with each other's work, and we also keep each other in check with not making it too complicated. If one person wants to make a page, the other can be like, "I don't think we need that" or look at an existing page and say "do you think we could simplify/delete this?"

My takeaway: not everything works for everyone. My personal experience: Some of these things work fantastic! Until they don't. Time blocking/task batching/pomodoro is awesome when I'm feeling overwhelmed and have the ability/time/need to buckle down and plow through a bunch of things and to take advantage of the mental energy I have at the moment. But I can't do it every day. Morning routine is fantastic, and we all have a routine we follow, but I can't get up everyday and do my braindump morning pages and and and and. But I can do parts of it to help my brain get woken up enough for work type thinking. And the self help book thing: Spot on! The whole "read 100 books in a year" thing stresses me out and seems ridiculous, unless you have robot instant recall brain. Heck, I have a hard enough time finishing _one_ personal development book that's relevant and interesting to me right now. 😂 Loved these collab videos! Great job!

and in the same vein of ipads people will purchase microsoft surfaces (atleast theyre really prevalent at my university) and even though i myself am a surface owner there are very few degrees where you actually need one. like i got mine during my second year of my bachelor of commerce doing accounting, but that was because i was struggling without one it was a genuine need, even the lecturer was using one in my cost and management accounting paper, so having one for the second half of that paper was a good send (even though i was online for some of that semester). and we wont go into how my now ex bought the surface for my birthday (i bought the peripherals), but its been the best investment ive made. but it would not be a worth while investment for something like arts like i would not have had a major benefit if i had of bought it during my bachelor of arts. accounting and maths are probably the most appropriate subjects to need a device that can ink, otherwise you're buying an expensive paperweight. accounting you're often given slides and digital "worksheets" you need to fill in during the lecture/workshops (atleast in my program) and im going to pass on that printing bill and typing in to them on a normal laptop can be tedious, which is why its so useful. and maths isnt really typable in any reasonable speed and while i had a notebook when i took a maths paper the amounts of scrap paper i had lying around from assignments and weekly tutorial worksheets was insanity so my surface would of paid of then. possibly some sciences i would assume but the need isnt as great.

Things get lost in the cloud, or accidentally deleted so easily. My bullet journal is physical and it is far less likely to just disappear. Just a personal preference due to how the technology has changed so drastically in my life time. I just always worry about losing my data that I have worked hard for (and it has happened to me personally).
