Wow, looking at the changing season really brings back memories. In the spring, I always held to a rigid rule: don't ride until after the second, hard rain. The salt dust left on the roads is murder to your bike and I hate rust forming in the small crevices. Believe me, many years the spring was warm, sunny and inviting, yet hadn't rained yet; I still held to my rule. I started this journey looking for Kawasaki as several of my past bikes were and very dependable too: 1977 Z1000, 1985 Ninja900, 2004 Meanstreak 1600. I thought about the Ninja 650, but then thought naked and followed the Z650. I'm an old fellow and really, the more upright the position, the better for my aches. Watching comparisons in the 650 class always brought up the SV650 and the more I looked at it, the more I liked it. The V engine always kept me thinking. So, as I commented in one of your other videos, the SV650 is in my future. You, Smokin Monkey, more than anyone else here on youtube, has the complete, comprehensive archive concerning the 3rd generation SV650. Insights, modifications and just open thoughts always brings me back to your videos. Thank you.

At first I wanted a cruiser like a Iron 883 or Yamaha Bolt, but as I kept researching and watching videos I changed from cruiser to supermoto to adventure and finally I landed on the sweet spot that is Naked Sport bikes. The SV650 just happens to be everything I never knew I wanted in a motorcycle from the styling, specs and riding position. It's also a huge plus that the SV650 has so much engineering over the years!

I live in France, season here is april to november although we still get out when the sun shines. Doing the same thing visiting dealers before spring starts for better deal, they have more stock and I am also not desperate to get on the road because of the cold. Last week test rode numerous bikes 650SV, z650, mt07, 690duke and I am in 2 minds between mt07 and 650sv all version a2 liscence(downtuned for beginner riders). Can verify that the power band of the SV is a pleasure - the downtune reduces performance above 6000 rpm but it feels great on the road. >>> I felt comfortable on the bike but not as integrated as the z650 probably due to the tank shape. I will be road testing these 2 bikes again just to confirm before I do the deal. 650SV +positve points for me. V Engine and performance, handling stiff and precise, stock muffler sound, digital speedo , price, brakes - I rode abs version and found the brakes great at least equal to any other bike I rode may be due to my lack of experience or because it was cold and I did not want to push it. Its a no fuss bike - very direct and you can really feel whats happening accelerating, braking and cornering. - negative points for me the styling like you said you have come to love it > I would like to see LED round headlight on one(cb650 style) - I agree the bike has heritage and rear swingarm a little to classic looking. I have a feeling the gladius plastic look failure probably got suzuki to rethink hard about this bike and they have done the right thing - removed a lot of the crap plastic that we expect and instead offered a clean, reliable, good performing bike. In reality if you want better performance you remove uneccessary stuff - suzuki looks like it has done that and saved us the work and converted that to price for savings for customer. MT07 +positive points for me. Engine and performance > the lower revs are very powerful, stock muffler sounded good, looks are really modern, 2 piece seat is comfortable > rear swingarm is more tech looking. Lighter overall 182kg and larger back wheel 180 adds to the look maybe not necessarily the performance. The MT engine revs and you can feel it, not delayed in any way but it also feels a little detached or cushioned in the grips whether this is engine mounts, suspension or otherwise I can't say - this may be good on longer trips. The SV felt much more in touch with the engine and what it was doing , less cushioning and a more direct feel of the engine revving. - negativepoints > Position of the speedo. I am told the suspension is too soft although I was unable to test this in cold. This makes sense though - the bike is one of the easiest to wheelie so probably stiff suspension would increase frame stress if you lift the front wheel constantly. Also here it is a bit of an over popular bike - predictable . More expensive 1000 Euro. One shop sounded like they were totally riding the poplularity train tried to sell me last years model 2019 1500km at this years price - went to another dealer offered new 2020 bike - my color choice and 0km and 50 Euro cheaper - do not feel afraid to visit as many dealers as necessary to get the right price.

I’m saving for a motorcycle and will purchase in the end of winter/spring and your videos have helped me narrow down my choice to the sv650 so thank you. Like your style of presentation for your video, I just saw this one so far but subscribed. I am in middle Georgia and I just rode my bike today. I have a 650, but it is a Honda VLX 650 from 2001. I have owned in the past 3 other cruisers style bikes, a 1998 Kawaski 750 Vulcan, and a 2001 1100 CC Honda Sabre, and a 1999 750cc Honda 4 cylinder Magna. I have never own a sport bike or naked bike. I am interested in buying a Suzuki SV650 and I also like the Honda CB650s. I am drawn to the SV650 because it has a little lower seat height. Is it top heavy at all? I love the sound of the Honda cb650s...but I am around 5"9" and 70 years old and it seems a bit high. Have you ever ridden the Honda cb650s? Tell me what you think of it. Also do you have a relationship with any dealers that will let you do reviews of their bikes? You can see and hear my 2001 Honda on my face book page. Allen J. Knight

Good points about an excellent bike. SV 650 3rd gen also satisfies experienced riders for riding on real world roads and also for touring at real world pace so you can actually take in the scenery as you pass through. Plenty quick enough, neutral handling, fairly basic but well set up suspension,great engine with smooth fuel delivery and reliability built in. Think about it carefully, when you are miles away from home on some trip or at work which bike do you want to rely on to start first time and get you to your destination hassle free, the sv650 or some fancy showroom pony with 3 rider modes and enough electronics to grace an aircraft cockpit. I know which I'd pick. Pick a bike that you control not one that is taking you for the ride.

Since you ride in cold weather I think it might be good to talk about the fact that tires lose their grip in temps under 40 degrees F. I found out the hard way a few years ago on a 25 degree day. As I leaned into a turn at an intersection my front tire crossed a newly painted white line and boom I was down in a second. I was going about ten mph when it happened.Tire had about 1/2 tread and was a season old, but rubber gets harder as the temps drop. Also, check the manufacture date on the sidewall. A tire may have great tread but if its four or five years old the rubber has deteriorated due to ozone and has become less grippy. I really like the looks of your bike. Nice video.
@SmokinMonkeyOG4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! And I’m sorry to hear that, I totally agree anything below 40 and your bike is much more prone to skidding and sliding because of bad traction. This is mainly because of the tire compound being made to be sticky when warm and it’s hard to warm the tires in low temperature with the road being so cold.
@jroberthadden4 жыл бұрын
@@SmokinMonkeyOG That's why it is so much better to run winter compound tires, such as Michelin X Ice or Bridgestone Blizzaks , on your car/truck in the colder months. We do. Too bad there aren't any available for bikes. Ride safe and take care of that nice Suzuki.
@jeffruebens83555 жыл бұрын
The SV-650 is a lower budget version of the Ducati Monster. Yammie Noob has 2 videos about the Consumer Reports owners survey for motorcycles- Yamaha was first, Honda and Suzuki tied for second, Kawasaki was third, and Harley-Davidson was fourth. A V-twin has a lot of torque, and sounds very good when engine braking at 20 mph. An inline 4 with 600cc is faster on a track, and an inline 3 splits the difference. Always check insurance costs for different bikes, especially if you are young.

Hi Smokin, I watched all of your videos and I have some questions. As I saw you changed the original seat with the one from model "X", is that right? This seat is 1 cm higher, is it so? Where did you buy it and for how much? I saw on the Suzuki official page that there is a similar seat but kinda sports one. What is the difference? I am considering the higher version of the seat because I am 186cm tall. I am a bit worried for my knee angle. Regarding this, did you feel any difference between the stock seat and this one that is 1 cm higher? Regarding the comfort you already mentioned that this is much better. Do you think that is better to order the bike with the stock seat and then buy the higher one from Suzuki dealer or to buy the aftermarket one later? Or do you even think that I wont feel any difference between the stock and that one you have? And the last two: - Vibrations: I had a Cagiva Canyon 500 with a single cylinder that had a lot of vibes. How do you find SV regarding this? Can cruise 120 kmh without annoying vibes? Do you think that is possible to do 300 km with this bike without being tired like a working dog? - RPM: What are the RPM at 120 kmh? Sorry for being long, but like you said, you were up to buy a 4 cylinder bike and you ended buying this. The same is with me. I am not a hard rider but I would like to buy a bike that can easily cruise at 120kmh and also overtake some veichles and with less or no annoying vibes that are present on single cylinder bikes. Thanks a lot.
@SmokinMonkeyOG4 жыл бұрын
As for the seat you won’t feel a difference in height. I did not notice the difference when I switched anyway. I purchased it from the Suzuki website so I only know of the original seat and the tuck and roll version, if there’s a third option this is the first I’m hearing of it. I will say the new seat is more comfortable though. As for cruising I don’t know what rpm the bike is at when I’m at 120km/h I don’t pay attention to that really to be honest so I can’t remember and it’s winter now so I can’t ride till spring time to even check. But I can say the bike has a lot of power for passing at high speed and I’ve never felt it was struggling. I don’t really get vibrations (not more than any other motorcycle) I would say it’s a pretty solid bike.

Good content in your vlog. Ya hit all of the good points about the bike. I just got back from a 900 mile tour (stock seat). Rode from Alabama through Tennessee, North Carolina and Georgia mountains. Even rode the Tail of the Dragon (11 miles 318 curves). The bike is a obsolete scalpal in the mountains. I have upgrade the rear shock and run cartridges and 10w oil with factory springs up front. I felt I was a little heavy for the factory suspension (185 lbs) and on hard braking would nearly bottom out the front forks. Now I can get on the binders hard and the front suspension is very progressive with no dive. I run Dunlop Q3+ tires. Very sticky, warm up quick and ya get good mileage from them for a sport tire. Heading to a novice track day school in Nov. Should be a great time. Cliche' but the SV is the Swiss Army Knife of the naked bike world that won't break the bank. Ride safe.

For the next season I plan to instal a complete line m4 or yoshimura and pass on the dyno for him out the belly hp max without playing him in the engine and maybe him instaler a snorkel kit too. and I'm not afraid to leave for returns of 600 km / day even 700. A real good machine I like!

I’m from upstate New York USA. Now live in Osaka Japan. I should (finally) have my Japanese full-size license in the next few weeks. I’m looking to get 650(ish) bike for long road trips around Japan in January/February. It’s pretty much down to the sv650, Honda cb400sb, or nc750xDct, “maybe” versus 650. I like the tracer700, perfect bike when I was in Spain, but for now can’t get it in Japan (why can’t I get a Yamaha in Japan????😂). How do you feel about the sv650 for touring; 600km-1000km in a day type thing?
@SmokinMonkeyOG5 жыл бұрын
I think with the right luggage set up and good seat you will love it. The power and handling would make it perfect for long trips like that.

A lot of traffic you say? The streets are almost empty. I guess that's Canada for you. Calgary is not that far north. I live near Copenhagen about 240 km farther north. I used to ride all year, also in snow, but stopped because too many vans were drifting sideways into my lane. Nice motorcycle. I'm 66 and I want one.

I’m really debating on this or the sv650x as much first bike. I’ve fallen in love with them over the past few months and I can see myself on one. There’s a lot of sales going on at my local dealers and I’m feeling ready to pull the trigger on it I really prefer the upright position but I think the extra modifications that come with the SV650x would be nice as well, plus I like the cafe racer style.

In colombia the night starts at 6:10 pm, so the sunset starts at 5:00 pm and is the best part of the day if you live in a warm country. January and febraury are good moth to buy things because christmas has ended and everybody has no money. Still deciding if buy this bike or the MT 07, there some second market SV 650 3rd gen that are very cheaper

Sv650 if you like riding on twisty roads. Mt07 for mostly street use.

@@israelanguiano2832 Thanks, the thing is I have a duke 200 (25 hp and 19.2 Nm) so I am not going to have problem riding the MT 07 in twisty roads and also the city I live is pretty small (150.000 people living there), so that why riding the sv 650 in the city would be very easy. Also both brands (yamaha and suzuki) are the best in the market here in Colombia so that I have so many problems deciding between these bikes.
@israelanguiano28325 жыл бұрын
@@santiagomoralesgarcia1802 it has to do with handling. Sv650 has better suspension. Mt07 has more torque for stopping and going.
@davidrestrepo28265 жыл бұрын
@santiagomoralesgarcia18025 жыл бұрын

I think they are similar but will both have their own riding characteristics. I would suggest taking one for a spin. I would buy a similar bike just to switch it up and ride some thing different.
