You are spot on with all the reasons to not move, live or be here. I’ve been here in Orlando, Florida since 2016 for college, I thought I would stay after college, sadly I’m now leaving this Fall for all the reasons you stated. Im a annual pass holder, living in Orlando suburbs, it still takes me sometimes 1 hour to go 10 miles. My rent more than doubled in 2022, traffic is terrible everywhere, motorists now constantly blow their horns at traffic lights, loud music coming from the cars, accidents galore, the list is actually larger than you covered. I love the beaches here but, driving 1 hour to the east coast side is busy with traffic and crowds at the beach. I’m starting to see tents everywhere around Orlando and Disney World. I’m definitely out of here by Thanksgiving to Christmas 2024. No more hot - humid Summers for me. I need and miss the 4 seasons as well. I’m a veteran and still can’t afford to buy a house here, especially with insurance and HOA dues rapidly increased. Food cost and fuel cost are also extremely high here.

@alyross2850
@alyross2850 Ай бұрын
There certainly are areas in the US that have a high cost of living, other than FL. I think what a lot of Floridians don’t truly understand is that they are paying an extremely (!!!!) high price in FL compared to your wages. And you can cherry pick areas that pay high insurance premiums and/or high taxes. They’re out there for sure. They are the exception, not the rule. Maybe they don’t realize that nurses are paid twice as much or more in the north, where most areas have a much lower cost of living as well. I live in a very nice neighborhood in SW PA, my 5BR house is valued around 400K, and my entire mortgage is less than 1300 a month. My taxes yearly are $900 (included in that 1300). That’s it….Even car insurance….i had 6 vehicles, 5 drivers of which 3 were under 25, and my insurance never went above 2800 per year. 3 cars with full coverage. I think it’s like the old tale of a frog being slowly boiled in water that the frog doesn’t realize he’s being cooked until he’s dead. They just keep piling on expense with no real answers in sight. Maybe there is nothing that can be done about the high insurance. But they could do something about the taxes. I feel bad for the native locals in FL because they will have to try to hang onto the only real hope that property values significantly decrease, which is not typically something to be hoping for.

I lived in NH for over 30 years. Now I am in PA. I miss the beauty and uncrowded nature of the state. ( but not the winters). All areas have advantage and disadvantages which are not often observable until one moves there. FL has low heating costs but high AC costs, so it is six of one, half a dozen, etc. You did not mention crime, which has increased in FL over the years. Low or no sales and income tax mean higher property taxes. ( as in NH) All states collect taxes of one form or another. There is also the culture to consider these days and the polarization of Americans towards one another. I would recommend that a family rent in a new location for a year, to determine if it is the best spot for them; schools, neighborhoods, traffic, crime, etc. PA and VA have busy areas and rural as well, plus 4 seasons.

Wages have always been the problem in Florida. You could buy a nice 4BR with a pool for 150K 15 years ago. But where can you work? They don’t pay medical the way they do in the north. I don’t know why FL has gotten away with this for so many decades. It’s not just unions up north. Most nursing jobs in my area are not union, and they are paid $30-90 per hour. I know because I used to be the one to approve their paychecks. My dad was a prominent engineer in the 70s-90s. We wanted to move to FL, and even he said we couldn’t afford the pay cut. And that was BEFORE all these taxes, insurance, cost of living issues.

My wife and I are both 62 live in upstate New York a little over an hour north Yankee stadium . Moving to Florida is not an option anymore just for all the reasons you said houses are crazy high and taxes have sky rocketed and forget the house and car insurance . Plus when I was in an Orlando everytime we went out on rte 4 there’s an accident and crazy traffic and delays . And the heat ? Nope no way staying in NY !

When you were about to announce your favorite state to move to, I was thinking "please don't pick my state..." And you didn't. Hip Hip Hooray! Highlighting any state just makes others move there and then THAT STATE has the same struggles as Florida right now. Now I live in a terrible state! Our politics are beyond stupid. Our state is hot and getting hotter. And wages are too low! The education system is pretty bad too. But my property taxes are just $300 A YEAR. I drive a very old (2001) Camry with 600,00 miles on it on roads that seldom congested. As a matter of fact there are days I don't meet another car on the seven mile drive to the city. Thanks for reminding how blessed I am.

There is a portability clause for property taxes if you are homesteaded. I don’t totally get how it works but it keeps you paying close to what you are paying on your current home. I do know you need to make sure your current home is showing a current market assessment before you sell. No help on a 2nd home

You are spot on about all points. 1 more can be added: rudeness. Everyone looks down their nose at you, honks horns all day and people drive like maniacs. I live in Orlando and the drive to any beach is so stressful that i don't even go, and people on the beach are rude and too close. I'm probably going to move somewhere back to Tennessee Moved here to get away from memphis crime. Memphis is horrible. Don't recommend it.

Yes, I do disagree about Southern hospitality not because its not a thing elsewhere, but honestly part of the reason one might move to South FL is that it IS 'NY South' ie you move to FL from NY/NJ because it is NOT the South. Tampa of course gets the states coming down I75 instead of I95, but Tampa isn't Atlanta!

You love to complain and it shows. So if you leave Florida, you can then complain about having left Florida. Save yourself the trouble of moving and just stay put. I can tell you secretly love living in Florida. Just enjoy yourself and forget the negatives. I love to go to NYC (at least I used to before they trashed it), and I love to get back on the plane to Florida. Florida’s my home of 31 years and I won’t leave. Where would I go - back to Chicago? Oi gevald ! Always remember: no Florida state income tax - one of Florida’s best features.

You have portability on homestead exemption, you can sell your house and transfer what youre paying in taxes to the next house And in case you haven’t seen lately, Tennessee prices tripled in the last 5 years. But I agree it’s way cheaper than Florida. I got lucky and bought a place in northeast Tennessee 5 years ago, I’m just waiting for my kids to finish school and I’ll go up there for good. My property taxes with no homestead is only $700 a year, and that’s for a farmhouse with 4 acres and a barn.
