Im not a permanent resident of Portugal but I do have a few properties that I rent out there.. I got everything fixed, including bank account, water , wifi and stuff with the help of a lawyer simply. It’s somehow a cost , that will save you a great deal of time.

As of late Portugal has become too expensive to live in, plus new laws regarding taxes will get deep into retirees and peoples pockets, crazy taxes, rents are threw the roof, real estate getting sky high, how the heck are the locals dealing with this high cost of living now, because high cost locals seem getting fed up with foreigners living there now, truly crazy!! i remember the old Portugal!!
@zepedro6666
@zepedro6666 11 ай бұрын
Why? Practically all the foreigners I know moved to here way before the nhr, so yes it may get a little bit down but people seem to forget one essential thing about nhr…it’s temporarily meaning that tax break wouldn’t last forever as it only last ten years! And then what? Pack up and leave? That kind of nomadic life style ain’t good for any nation! And yes plus tremendous social and taxes injustice that created plus the cost for the nation seems to high to keep as the latest numbers show the tax break cost around 1.3 billion euros to national treasury! In conclusion: it was good thing in the beginning but by the end it didn’t produce substantial results in the economic development. Cheers😊

The best country in the world for a casual visitor, is never the same for the inhabitants. Bureaucracy is ALways a problem in every country. Even in northern western countries, they become more bureaucratic because of increasing complexity of the whole system. Renting a house in all meditarrenean countries is a pain, because everyone wants the house free during the summer. For us in Greece, we used to say , " I will go to Norway because everything is digitalised and work- life balance is easier to achieve ". But when you go there you realize that there are other things that actually are worst than in your country, and you didn't expect. .

Love your videos so much. Rental is usually 1 year if you stay away from the beach. I have properties in Porto and Braga and contracts are all yearly, rolling over. I also always furnish my rentals because I target people who may be staying for 2 or 3 years and can ask for a higher rent.

Now I understand why the lights weren’t on, in the lobby of the apartment building I rented, in Portimão! It freaked me out each night, coming back, and it was dark. I had to walk several steps, in the dark, before the lights would come on. Then, the lights would go out behind me. In California, entry lights area always on for safety. It’s so you can see where you’re walking, and no one can hide and attack you. I was staying in a touristy area with a lot of bars, and drunk people. Better lighting was needed. This will help me make a better choice in accommodations, on my next trip. A hotel, with a front desk person, will be more comforting.

Congratulations on finding a 12 month rental. I just signed my second half year contract. I have a dog, so the needle is smaller and the haystack bigger! I love Portugal. The people are kind and welcoming, as a woman I feel very safe and the landscape, weather culture, food and nature are all amazing. I would say for me the biggest hurdle has been the low build quality and lack of modernized ventilation, heating and cooling. Finding a rental with no mold/damp issues has been very hard, even at a quite high price point. I knew this was a problem prior to moving here as I have visited and stayed in different places, but the problem is honestly much more severe and widespread than I had initially realized, so I would say this is a top consideration and con that you should be aware of if you are considering a move to Portugal.
@Daphna.
@Daphna. 11 ай бұрын
Great point. Do you feel that mold and dampness are a problem in new houses too?
@jaanaprall9961
@jaanaprall9961 11 ай бұрын
@@Daphna. Unfortunately yes, the mold/damp issues are very often a problem in the new builds as well. You need to be extremely careful to have independent inspections done. Many Portuguese builders are not building up to the standards that you would expect elsewhere. The house may look new, but will often have black mold in a few years. Another issue is if you buy in an apartment building the way your neighbor takes care of their apartment can effect your apartment to various degrees depending on the construction of the walls between apartments. It is common for people here to leave their apartments unheated with the shutters completely closed for months at a time. Also you should pay attention to the common spaces. Sometimes the mold will be very bad in stairways between the apartments. I was originally planning to buy a house immediately, but due to these issues I have chosen to rent for a while longer to learn more and avoid making a costly mistake.

Never choose a place with north wall and make a little test open windows and see if the air flows, if you follow these simple steps you will don’t have any troubles. Of course these places normally are more expensive because Portuguese now it, best apartments are sunrise and south, sunset are very hot in summer and north run from it 😂

@jaanaprall9961 last Winter I haven’t turned on the heating once. I live in Cascais-Estoril, near the coast, in a fairly recent construction (2005), and it’s perfectly tolerable to be the whole year without heating or AC. It only gets really cold a couple of days per year, and as it might get some more days of extreme hot, it can be dealt with by closing windows during the day and opening them during the night.

@@Daphna.mine is from 2005 and has no mould. Since 2013 the “certificado energético” became mandatory for all housing sales. This means that houses built since 2013 should be more likely to conform with energy efficient materials and construction. This means that walls should be less prone to get cold inside and thus creating conditions for condensation to occur and mould to grow.

5:58 That reminds me of a funny story. 😂 About 20 years ago I was moving to my new house. So I was required to change my address on a bunch of entities. One of them was social security. They had an online portal at the time, and had an option to update your address. I tried to update it at home, so it would not interfere with my work, and when I chose the option a message popped up: This option is only available during business days at working hours. 😂😂😂😂😂😂

I moved to and early retired to Portugal 2 years ago without ever visiting. Although it’s been a wonderful experience and life here it is NOT without its negatives. It was fun to hear your point of view. I thought I was the only one who felt the way you did. My biggest frustration is with the bureaucracy here. Even the simplest thing at a bank that would take 5 minutes in the US takes 1 hour here 🤣 I’m glad you are enjoying life overall here.
