That Rick DiPietro contract is one of the biggest fails in NHL history, if you also consider they burned a first pick where they could have gotten Dany Heatley, and they traded away Roberto Luongo to make room for him.

Luongo was a sieve in the playoffs. He was ONLY above average in regular season which is quite useless hence why luongo lost the role in 2011 to Schneider and was traded off. I think be knew it too, hence the early retirement compared to real hall of fame cup winning tenders like Brodeur. I was a big lu fan as a young goaltender growing up. But facts are facts. He couldn't handle playoff extra effort and pressure.

Remember Chris Pronger? The Flyers accountant office still does. Although he played his last match in december 2011, the flyers had to pay him until the 2016-2017 season. They even traded his contract to Arizona for Sam Gagne, in 2015.. He is the only player in history to be inducted to the HOF although he was technicaly an active player. :)

I remember him coming to Nucks camp after crazy good preformance at world juniors and the anticipation of good things to come. False rumors, a misdiagnosed back injury, and a shocking trade later, it was years before his actual condition was revealed. Teams buy out the contracts in a settlement... So they don't make as much as you think... Also now they aren't allowed to make as long term contracts like back in the day which shields teams from having to pay players well after their playing days are over... I wasn't against teams issuing long term contracts the length of Roman Dynasties but i think teams shouldn't get a cap hit from it... But like i said now that i think the limit is 6 years, this isn't an issue anymore, anyways...

Don't clubs have insurance to cover salaries that must be paid to players on LTIR?

Cap hit is not actual salary! Example, player "z" has signed a 3 year contact paying $1 million in year 1, $2M in year 2, and $3M in year 3. Total = $6 million over 3 years, Cap hit is the average which is $2 million. Even when a buyout takes place, the cap hit which the team takes often differs from outstanding salary owed.

You are correct, I don’t know why I didn’t check his actual salary per year. Lazy on my part

Why did Grabovski stop playing though? I just now realized he wasn't still playing.

Brad Richards was all calculated. He knew Rangers would suck then went and won a cup with the Hawks and retired

If the Canucks could buy out Eriksson that would be greeeeeeeeeat. Then maybe half the Canucks wouldn't be on the Flames 😂
