Neat thing about the DiPietro buyout, though, is that it was a “compliance buyout,” a neat little thing granted to teams in the last lockout. He still gets paid, but it’s a zero cap hit buyout.

You have the Bob/Bryz thing all wrong. They signed Bryz to that contract and Bob said trade me or I'm walking. Bob wanted to be a starter but the Flyers had signed someone else for that role in FA. So he forced their hand by making comments and the Flyers lost out on a decent return cuz they lost their leverage, since everyone knew Bob was gonna walk. That's why they had a middling return. But let's not forget that this series of events also got the Flyers Steve Mason, who played over 200 games as their starter and put up some decent seasons for them to keep them competitive(ish). From the moment he signed, there were rumors abound that Bob wasn't going to stay in Philly for very long.

Flyers fan here...still to this day I cringe on this. I was shocked when they announced that awful wound to a team that's been bleeding for years. I just hope that they learned a valuable lesson and don't deal out errson. I see hart taking a back seat to this kid. I mean 6 shut outs in 1st real 6 games. Now if they can clog the giant hole Ellis opened and realize that couturier and Atkinson are probably never going to heal, I'd sleep better at night

Can someone with knowledge please explain how a team "wins" anything, by buying a dead contract from another team with an long-term injured player who will never play for the franchise and give something for the money spent (?). I have heard something, but I just can't grasp how a team "win" anything as it sounds the very opposite. I mean you are literary giving away money (!) Chris Pronger's contract with Philadelphia who then Arizona picked up or Brent Seabrock where his Chicago contact was picked up by Tampa Bay are some fine examples.
@slava6454
@slava6454 Жыл бұрын
What these teams do win is basically a draft pick or even a couple of picks which the team that wants to get rid of the “dead contract” gives up as a compensation. So it’s kinda money for picks, which should be OK. Cause if it is OK for the Coyotes, it’s OK for every other franchise. Recent Example: Vegas gets rid of Shea Weber’s dead contract + 5th round pick (2023) for defenseman Dysin Mayo, Yotes agree.

Another thing to keep in mind is teams like Arizona trying to reach the salary floor. The NHL has a salary cap of $82.5M, but teams are also required to spend at a minimum $61M (the salary floor). Teams like Arizona shop for deals where a player might be on IR so the insurance company will pay it, or they'll look for deals where a player had a front-loaded contract. The way a player's individual contribution to a team's salary cap works is based off the average salary of that player over the duration of their contract. Additionally, many players are paid signing bonuses on the first day of their contract each year. For instance, Erik Karlsson with the Sharks has an 8 year, $11.5M cap hit contract. That $11.5M is the average of all 8 years of his deal...his first year he earned $14.5M, then $12M, $14.5M, $12M, $11.5M, $11M, $9M, and $7.5M. If Arizona traded for him before the last year of his deal they'd be credited for $11.5M towards reaching the salary floor despite only paying him $7.5M. However, they can make it even better for themselves based on exactly when he's traded. His contract gives him a signing bonus every year on July 1st. In his last year he gets a $6M signing bonus on July 1st and then earns $1.5M split over the rest of the season, so if they trade for him on July 2nd they only have to pay him $1.5M but they're credited for $11.5M towards reaching the salary floor.

Bought out and forced to retire? What exactly does this mean?
@kx4998
@kx4998 Жыл бұрын
buy-out means the team wishes to break a contract before the deal ends and negotiate with the player's camp to pay the player the remainder of the contract (sometimes with extra money) in a longer span of time. Forced to retire means that player can no longer play for reasons out of their control, it usually due to medical reasons.
