Amorphis not just went soft they had a continuing evolution straight from the start. their first album was Doom/Death Metal. the second incorperated Folk influences. the third had very little death and more clean vocals. than they went more into direction of progressive rock. and when Tomi Joutsen joined as lead singer they embraced the death metal roots again and from that point on their sound contains elements of everything they have done before. with on the later albums even hints of black metal.

Amorphis still does harsh vocals as well as clean. Katatonia is an unfair mention on the list as the singer destroyed his voice before the first album even dropped. He’s best buds with Mike from Opeth who did the vocals on the first album. So they changed their sound so they could still make music.

guibox3 I agree but if you listen to those bands and I love Slayer they have become stagnant
@guibox37 жыл бұрын
So what exactly made them 'good' before, but now they are stagnant? What exactly are you basing this on? The tastes of society? Why should a band with good sound change for the sake of changing? What about AC/DC? They are just as good as they've always been and they haven't changed their sound. Good music is good music no matter when it was conceived. As Angus Young said, 'If you've got a great cake, why f*** with the recipe??"
@guibox37 жыл бұрын
So you're saying I learn to love a band because of their sound and I listen to them BECAUSE I love that sound. But all of a sudden, they completely change and somehow that's okay? Somehow, my 'ear buds' changed taste right along with them? That makes no sense. If I love cake because it is made, I'm not going to say, 'Damn..I love this cake, but I want to change it. Let's add brussel sprouts! Why? Who knows. Apparently we're just supposed to change things up and expect them to be just as good.'

Every single one was better after going soft. Every. Single. One. Being too "hardcore" is just edgy and people grow out of it.
@Goabnb947 жыл бұрын
I don't think its a matter of being hardcore or edgy, just that they are passionate and as their lives change, the music changes alongside it.

Nikolay Stoynov I agree, listening to hardcore music is a part of being an edgy teen. Nothing else.

What about them? I have personally never liked them before their newest album.

Back in 2009, I would have said Mastodon is another great example, but nowadays, I guess they don't really count, as they went from heavy, got softer for three consecutive albums, started getting heavier again, decided to go a tad softer, and now their getting heavier again with Emperor Of Sand. XD

Except most of this list got way better: Katatonia, Anathema, Amorphis, Alcest, The Gathering. You can say they're not your cup of tea but they went from generic metal bands to something quite different, that's fairly interesting to most of us.

Have you heard Baroness' last two albums? Fucking masterpieces. Though that's not to say the earlier stuff isn't amazing.

And also with Gojira, I would agree. With, Magma, they went soft, but that's still a good album nonetheless, one of the best metal albums of 2016 for sure.

SO basically 9 out of 10 times "going soft " is just getting a singer that can actually , SING!

Nunya Bissiness you'd be surprised how much harder it is to learn to growl than sing clean.

Nunya Bissiness do it then, match the pitch of all the gutteral singers, AND hold it longer than them...that's about 40 seconds buddy...good luck! i'll expect a video of this in 2 days!

Nunya Bissiness I'm afraid there's a lot of technique involved, I'd even venture to say more so than clean vocals.

I personally like Ulver much more the way they are now, than the way they were back in their black metal days. Same with Opeth. I honestly don't see them any softer than before, just clearer vocals, and god bless them for that, because I like to hear voices over screams. I like bands that progress through the years, bands like Ulver, Current 93, Swans, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds (although I definitely don't like the mellow, moody, stuff after Boatman's Call) and that's the reason why I lost interest in other great bands, like AC/DC or Iron Maiden, which are very good, incredibly talented and brutal, yet... more of the same.
@shailendraahangama36274 жыл бұрын
Man great choice in music. I understand why you lost interest in AC/DC... But Iron Maiden? Monotonous and the same sounding? Dude I disagree. They have tons of prog elements in their stuff in their later albums. I suggest you give them a shot once more. Cus Mikael cites Maiden as a huge influence.

Robert Plant has always had more softer songs. They were heavy a lot but they have various different things that went into songs. Jimmy page even said in It Might Get Loud, "You have to have light to have dark"

@chrisstephens2647 жыл бұрын
I think every band has to change in someway in their music career they can't keep up the same shit all the time it would drive them crazy softening some of their music is just basically them showing a different side of them I like it
@randallw19777 жыл бұрын
How does singing cleaner where I can understand you better make them soft? The music part pretty much still had heaviness.
@berkerrang41494 жыл бұрын
To be fair, I prefer more energetic music, but my favorite bands have a decent amount of soft music as well. It takes just as much if not more talent to write ballads that send chills down your spine. It also usually shows off the vocal range even more. Some bands i skip over slower and lighter songs, but on the other hand, the reason i dont really enjoy core is because its in your face constantly and just starts to blend together.
