Outstanding vlog as usual. Very clever idea for locking the bitter end of the furling line. I would make one minor alteration which would be to use Dyneema kite string which has a breaking strength of 100+lbs for a single line - several wraps would make it bullet proof … plus has good UV resistance

I’m not sure I saw all the action on the tapping procedure. However when tapping by hand it’s 1/4 turn than reverse to break the chip than repeat. On a blind hole I always back out and clear the chips, usually with air. You could use WD-40 or tinny magnet. a bottom tap for the last couple of threads. At this stage I think you have some good threads part of the way. Take a set screw grind a cylinder shape extension, this may put pressure on the rope spool well and act as a set screw. Just a little insurance to negate a problem in the middle of the ocean. Love to watch you on KZbin !!!

When you were first running the tap in, about 11:54, I was wincing! It looked like it was running too hard. Did you use the correct tap drill before running the tap? It's specific not only to the screw size, but also the thread pitch AND the material of the piece being tapped! Using the wrong drill size is a recipe for disaster, because the only thing worse than having to drill out a broken screw is to break off a tap! As you found out, the tap is MUCH harder than any screw, pretty much impossible to drill out. Ask me how I know! Hope your solution works out! Bravo for keeping at it!

I dont think it needed to even be tapped. The bolt came out with a fair amount of thread intact. Probably could have just ran a thread chaser through it to clean it up and been fine.

I just made the mistake of trying to tap two materials at the same time with a drill tap combo. Light weight material but still a rookie mistake. End result broken tap and a lot of cursing.

I recently changed boats and went from a traditional mainsail to an in mast roller furling… do you have any recommendations on how properly unfurl, furl it back in? For example what to do with boomvang, main sheet, topping lift etc? Ps: thanks for featuring Deltaville,
@TheFosterJourney
@TheFosterJourney 2 ай бұрын
There's a point where the boom provides equal tension on the foot and the leech. There's where it needs to be when furling it in. You don't want to furl it with a loose foot or loose leech. Loosen the vang and sheets to haul it out, and keep the boom about the same as when you furl it in. When hauling it out, again, watch that the tension on the leech and foot are equal. If your mainsail is old or over stretch in the belly, you might have problems.

I would be nervous about that fix. There is an reason such a heavy set screw was used...
@TheFosterJourney
@TheFosterJourney 2 ай бұрын
Nah, the reason for the big screw is to avoid cutting through the line. When the sail is powered up there's no force on the bitter end of the furling line. The only time there's a force on the bitter end is when the sail is over furled for a storm - and then you're using a rope to secure it to the mast.

This is why I dont like any furling systems. More stuff that will break or jam.
