The derogatory "slag" applied to a woman comes from the same term originally applied to men, but not used to mean sexually promiscuous. "Slag" as applied to a man was essentially calling him worthless, as worthless as leftover metal from the forge process, and in fact is believed to be a shortening of "slack-mettled," a direct reference to bad metalworking. I really like him. The stupidity of his alt modes (meaning those two things, not the look of them) adds to their charm. I had and could not stand G1 Broadside, gave him away years ago. Pumped my fist in the air when Thew said how crap he was. Probably my most hated G1-former next to Blot. I love the Generations beefcake version. And Thew managed to even mention the fun trivia of the weird off model (meaning they likely didnt have a model) UK comics version with the derpy face. Sandstorm also turns up in those issues a bit off model too.

Slag means molten metal, the British slang term is the reason the name has been changed.

Also refers to molten rock/lava. Hence the Dinobots thematic tie in. They also ended up in Volcano's a bunch of times. And now we have a volcano named/inspired combiner. It's good when colloquial language trumps any form of intelligence and forces a multinational company to change their character name. Or the copyright expired, like all the other name changes to old characters - whichever came first I guess.

During earlier Transformers series the term "Slag" is also used as a replacement for "hell" or "Damn" similar to the way "Scrap" is now used. A lot of the name changes aren't really because they've lost the rights to the trademark, but because the term wasn't able to be trademarked in the first place. For example we see "Autobot Jazz" on packaging, because Hasbro couldn't trademark the term "Jazz" by itself.

Just because the UK has a slur which is slag doesn't mean the rest of the world needs to change to accommodate the UK. The UK is not the center of the universe. Slag: The vitreous mass left as a residue by the smelting of metallic ore. A perfectly good word with a perfectly valid definition which makes a good name for a robot.
