Thanks for this. Really helpful. I’ve done a lot in acrylics but get disappointed with the colour dulling upon drying. I’ve borrowed some oils and loved the colours but found the drying time super long! Thanks for the tips. Helping me see there are some options to try further like water mixable oils, oil paper for sketching out and fast drying mediums. Let’s see....

Another great thing about oil painting paper it can save you so much money if you sell your art. I use about half a sheet of oil painting paper and do mini paintings, find a nice thrifted and or vintage frame, paint the frame if I need to, and sell! You can stretch your dollar so far that way. I used to think I always had to paint on big canvases but cost and time wise doesn't always pan out and I find that many people love a smaller framed painting for their desk, gifting etc

I’m a watercolor artist and have begun dabbling in oils. There s a huge learning curve but I love the buttery feel of oils. I recently bought a set of WN acrylics and I have to say I hate them. They dry too fast and I cant blend. I love gouache but don’t like acrylic gouache. But that’s just me.
@jaspalette3 жыл бұрын
Why don't you like acrylic gouache?
@ChristinaTodd19703 жыл бұрын
@@jaspalette Mostly I don’t like wasting paint and it’s hard to get the right amount, especially with mixes. I end up with piles, although small, that I don’t use and cannot be saved. I think that’s my biggest issue but I also find blending harder with acrylic gouache than re-wettable gouache.
@AmandaMG62 жыл бұрын
Golden open acrylics help but my favorite is chroma atelier - that don’t look like plastic when dry. I use these under oil paint ☺️
@ChristinaTodd19702 жыл бұрын
@Amanda M It’s a year since I made that post. What’s changed since then is I’ve bought a Masterson stay wet palette. Acrylics and acrylic gouache certainly aren’t my favorite medium but the stay wet palette has been a game changer for me. Not having to worry about paint drying on my palette allows me to focus more on learning how to use acrylics, blend, glaze, and not have to hurry so my paint doesn’t dry.

I feel like. Acrylics are the love of my life but I do not want to limit myself so I bought myself some water mixable oil paints and ifeels like learning to walk again 😂 What I find I like doing is do a layer or two in acrylics and finish the painting in oils...

I'm mainly a graphite/charcoal drawer but I experimented with watercolour and enjoyed the vivid colours you can get compared to coloured pencil, but I realised I was using my watercolours the way you would use other types of paint - i.e. not watered down at all. I had used acrylic before as a teenager and decided I would just skip that, and went straight to oil. First thing I noticed was that you certainly need to prep more for it - in terms of clean up and colour mixing at least. Second thing was that while watercolour seemed like "placing a colour down", oils really feel like I'm placing some colours and then the majority of the time is just sort of pushing those colours around. Something about that is really enjoyable to me so I think I'll carry on with oils for a while. Thanks for the tips.
@sabrinamuckridge73553 жыл бұрын
I started with acrylics, and finally got the courage to try oils after several acrylic pieces. I find them a lot more challenging to work with, but I feel like that’s because I’m still learning how to work with them. As a self taught beginner I found acrylics easy because they do dry so fast I can just work over other layers with a totally different color if needed and not worry about colors mixing due to such quick dry times. So I got in the bad habit of not blocking out areas, but continually working over areas as I wanted. I also layer light over dark and dark over light to get my contrast right and am constantly working back and forth to get it where I want it. Now I’m trying to learn to work with oils and have to plan out and try to color block my areas more, but then I also am still learning how to plan my lights and darks and get details in without muddying everything up. I find myself letting layers dry for a week or two so I can go back over once the paint is dry enough not to smudge around. I’m still trying to Learn to work with it. I love the blending play when I want it, and love the richness of the colors and look and feel when painting with it. But for me it seems so much harder to work with, unless I’m looking for the blend, then oh so much easier!!! Someday I’ll get there, and get there faster, in the meantime, I take months of working on a painting... You have been a huge inspiration in wanting to paint to begin with. I followed some of your tutorials, loving your ocean and water paintings, and the playfulness and looseness of your style. I have a hard time letting things be loose and fun, getting hung up on details, but am working on it. You are an amazing artist that I can relate to on so many levels. You inspire and motivate me. Thank you for being you and sharing yourself with the rest of us!

I use water soluble oils and love them. W&N have a solvent for them that I now use instead of water, which stops the paint from going dull and I also use the quick drying medium specially made for them - all still easily cleaned up with water. I think my only complaint would be that there are less colours to choose from than regular oils and for some reason W&N only seem to make the mediums in small sizes.

I agree, I think oils are the most forgiving, in terms of blending, if you botch it ,let it dry and go over, you learn more about the colours themselves because you have the time to see what happens to them. And there's a lusciousness to oils that you dont get with acrylics. My favourite after oils is pen and ink. With coloured inks and or watercolours. Very expressive and free and quick, so you have the slowness of oils and while it dries do a couple of pen and inks, although I use a brush instead of a pen

I love painting with oil, but get annoyed with the drying time. I still find acrylic difficult, they dry out too fast and I have noticed that the colour shifts too much, I am continuing to experiment with them, I finally feel like I can use water colour effectively and love the quick drying. I stopped using oils a couple of years ago due to my asthma and interested in trying the water mixable oil, when I initially enquired about them a number of years ago, everyone was very negative about them, but I have noticed that the art stores are now stocking more of them, so that will probably be my next adventure into art, I hope they feel similar to oils.

So far I did 2 oil paintings. What I'm really confused about is all the different solvents. And also linseed oil aswell! I don't even know how that works. I bought Sennelier "bio" solvents. They don't smell, and no health risk either. But I don't get the importance of having separate solvent and cleaner.... As for the experience, I muuuuuuuuuuch prefer oils! I've always painted with aquarell and the feeling is more similar with oil than with acryl. I like the fact that I can use it thick but also thin. Blending is much easier! I find that the paint almost instantly makes itself blend, it is not evene me, who does it. And so the results are very beautiful. I always feel like I have to fight with acryls. They dry too fast, always patchy, I easily cover up something that was beautiful, and lose it forever. What makes the most different for me is: for example, I feel like I just need a little color to ad, just a little red on a green tree to soften it. With oils one would maybe never know I've put a little red in there, you would just see a harmonious shade range. While with acryl, there would be distinct patches of where i've put the mixed colours. And overall, acryl always looks like plastic to me. The colours often feel like they are just one shade of artificial colours. While oil always looks more organic, more pleasant to my eye. There is more variaty within one shade, just like there is countless colours in the world. . ....so long story short:I prefer oils😅
