As an ex helicopter mechanic, I can say that the expense of a helicopter is not buying it, it is maintenance. A helicopter spends as much time in the workshop (a certified Part. 145 workshop, with Part.66 mechanics) as in the air. Not to mention the paperwork and the high cost of certified parts. A helicopter is, after all, a hundred critical parts circling an oil leak until metal fatigue sets in. It flies by beating the air into submission while centrifugal force is trying to tear it apart.

You are absolutely correct. When I was drafted and volunteered for flight school, my main motivation was I wanted to fly over the jungle rather than slog through it. I knew nothing about helicopters and had never even been close to one. Besides the intensive maintenance required by professional mechanics, there are other aspects about helicopters one should know about. Some types of helicopters, including ones I learned to fly in primary flight school, are subject to "ground resonance". This is a self generating vibration set up between the ground and the vibrating helicopter that can destroy the helicopter. It is encountered when your skids are lightly touching the ground during take off and landing. Worth a search here on youtube to see how destructive it is.

The other problem was just before we were about to solo they installed throttle governors that if you over reved even just a little, it would spin the throttle back so fast you could injure your wrist if you were gripping it too tight. It was not unusual that I would "red X" two or three during preflight before I found one safe to fly. But flying solo was one of the best experiences of my life.

Sadly not a single one of these is an ultralight by the FAA standards here in the US. Composite FX Mosquito XEL with the floats (which still fudges the rules just a touch) is the only one left on the market that I know of. I would love to see Helicycle come back with a machine under the 254 pound cutoff. Really want to see a Safari 400 style in a single seat ultralight... that would be epic!
@kdanagger68943 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, any personal helicopter that complies with Part 103 rules is probably going to be dangerously underpowered. I think that is why Helicycle (Eagle R&D - now Helicycle ventures) has gone to the turbine powered model only. The Composite FX (Mosquito) XEL (ultralight) and XE are also quickly falling out of favor due to the underpowered air cooled 2 stroke. The XE290 seems to have adequate power with the 90 horse water cooled engine and is their best seller. The turbine XET model is definitely more powerful and more reliable and it is now roughly on par with the price of the turbine powered Helicycle. Currently, the Composite FX XET seems to be slightly favored, but in reality they are pretty closely matched. Each one offers slight advantages over the other in different areas.
@tCCZebra703 жыл бұрын
@@kdanagger6894 The XEL and XE have been out since the engine was sold to a Chinese firm and there is no purchase agreement between Composite FX and the new owners (according to an e-mail conversation I had with C-FX last year). The power produced by the MZ202 was actually quite adequate for a 240 pound pilot (down here at sea level where I live). Reliability when cared for properly wasn't really and issue. It has been around for a very long time and the bugs are all worked out. Today, however, there aren't a lot of us (at least in the USA) left who know 2 stroke motors like back when I was a kid. The XE 285 had plenty of extra power even at high altitude, I'm sure the upgraded 290 is amazing, but still requires at least a Private Pilot Certificate.

You can find completed kits that come unassembled for $90,000 being resold as completed for like $15,000 to $25,000. They can't afford the time, money, or tooling needed to keep them running so they try to get rid of them, then discover that helicopters are infamous within the amatuer aviator community as white elephants that very few can keep flightworthy. So they drop the price until its 1/4th the new price before anyone else will take it. Usually another inexpierienced aviator who has absolutley no idea that they just inherited a hot mess. If you are an amatuer aviator or kit builder, stick with planes.

With respect, your opinion on what the costs of helicopters should be, and that the skills required to safely fly them should be made easier to acquire are so far from the actual reality of what it costs to design and manufacture even the most basic, simple helicopter (Mosquito Air) in kit form for the buyer to build and safely fly it! There are helicopter flight simulators available, and model kits to build and fly, and teaching oneself how to fly a helicopter that you've built yourself from plans is actually possible and legal, and relatively inexpensive in comparison, it is not the route that many people follow! The design and manufacture of a simple, single seat, piston powered helicopter for the self build market will be hugely less expensive than a simple , two seat, piston powered helicopter which is ready to fly and fully certified! When he designed his Mosquito Air helicopter kit the late John Uptigrove ensured that whilst it was ultralight, it was very well engineered to sustain the stresses and fatigue inherent in helicopter airframes and components! It was also very straightforward to learn how to fly - for a helicopter! A highly technical, precisely engineered aircraft built from aviation grade metals, composite materials and components simply cannot be produced cheaply!
@berndheiden76305 жыл бұрын
steven bathurst Thats a quite communist idea of how the world should be! So somebody should come up with a helicopter that is cheaper to manufacture, then build a factory, hire workers, go through a rigorous government licensing procedure and in the end hand the product out to needy wannabe helicopter pilots who expect to be flying it without training and off course on free gas and maintenance. Wake up, this is not how the real world is running. This is how Karl Marx phantasized the world should be but since his times it has been proven without doubt that it has never worked in any country who tried it. In the real world if you want something you work your ass off to make enough money to be able to pay a fair price for what you want and accept the fact, that whoever makes that for you hopefully will get rich doing just that.

Or you could include the much more mature looking 2-seat Scorpion-133 with a 150 mile range, 75mph cruise, and goes for about $20,000(us) used, and there's usually one or two available for sale on the Vortech website.

I realize the power plant and avionics are the most expensive aspect of the copter, but if they lower the price more people will buy, and more units will be sold, you save money on buying quantity and pass the savings on to the consumer.if you make your assembly line efficient and accurate you can also save money and again pass the savings onto the consumer

Hi there, Steven. I won't mind the prices to go down, but it seems like the market is in equilibrium. After all a helicopter is not a mass market vehicle and those people who need fit, will end dup paying the higher buck. Then go safety requirements, that drive the price up even further, plus do not forget high maintenance costs etc etc. I can hardly see a VTOL below the 35k as some of the kits from this video

On the other hand, they would have to build more factories, hire more employees, buy more tools and machinery, have more dealerships, and arrange more deliveries - all quite expensive. Fuel based helicopters use a lot of fuel a hour compared to fixed wings. But you burn fuel it gets lighter not with batteries. Push a drone in the air until the battery is dead and see what happens. With a standard helicopters you can auto rotation down I don’t know with drone style airframes

@@FirstnameLastname-ud7fg o come on friend lol you think id stay in a chopper and sit pretty well it goes into autorotation ? iv only skydived like 6 times but i understand it id rather pull the parachute out man they hit so hard still with autorotaion what do ya think man ?
@FirstnameLastname-ud7fg5 жыл бұрын
savagex466 actually, some helicopter pilots think that an engine out in a helicopter is safer than an engine out in a plane, they think the because when you do an autorotation, you flair as you’re going to land, your speed is reduced to 10 MPh. The KZbinr smarter everyday has a great video about autorotation. (I’m also into skydiving and BASE jumping) and I’d much rather land via autorotation. If I jump out of the heli, I risk both my life and the lives of anyone below me. Not to mention helicopters don’t tend to fly too high and a parachute failure would suck

Two prerequisites for flying a helicopter: you have to be crazy and you have to rewire your brain to fly one. But if I had to pick one here, I'd go with the Safari 500. Reminds me of the Hughes 500 and the OH-6A US military helicopter that I flew. But I was spoiled and flew Huey A,B,C,D and H models and the Cobra AH-1G.

@@damonedwards6724 After graduating from flight school, a few of us were taken out to a field where there was a CH-47, Medevac Huey and Cobra lined up for our choice of additional training. I went through the CH-47 and figured there was too much available to hit with gunfire, Medevac did not involve a new model and being young and stupid the Cobra stood out, so sleek like the sports model of the helicopter family. Flying the front seat was like a magic carpet ride. How did the controls of the 47 work. No antitorgue tail rotor so what did the pedals do to keep you in coordinated flight?

@@automotiveterritory Its ability to get into isolated places very fast and to be able to carry a reasonably amount of weight doing it. I have a little background with HU-1 cobras. @@codmott286 no you are wrong there it because people like you do not know any better. Been around them for over 50 year and I know every moving part on them. To make it easy for you to understand. You buy a house in Oklahoma with 2 acres for 100k you go to Long beach California you pay a million five for same house on 50 x 100 foot lot. Its dumb ass like this that has caused this problem. Not only with helicopters but all thing. And helicopters are the least expensive thing to develop and build. There is very little to a HU-1 cobra if you remove the weapons system. If you reset the fuel on the engine and push it real hard it will fly close to 300 knots I bet you did not know that.
