I told my wife that whomever empties the dishwasher needs to put the next cleaning pack in and close the soap drawer. Now my kids follow the same rule. A quick glance at the open soap dish tells anyone with a dirty dish in their hands to stop.

My dishwasher has a light on the instrument panel that comes on at the end of the cycle and remains on until the door is opened to indicate the dishes are clean. My house rules state that if the clean indicator light is on and you are the first one to open the dishwasher, it's your duty to unload it.

I might just buy one for my sister and brother in law. My bro inlaw has to use post it on their dish washer saying "Clean" or "Dirty" because the kids always mix things up and sometimes themselves. They would grab dishes and utensils inside the washer to use only to realize it's dirty. Or mixing a dirty dishes with an already clean dishes😂😂😂. There's 7 of them in their home. My son did that alot before until he learned to ask me all the time if the dishes are clean or dirty😁😂. There's only me and him.

Always look forward to your videos! A nice automation I cooked up recently was to up a smartthings multi purpose sensor under our couch cushion. This allows me to make an automation that if the couch is occupied, and the tv is on, dim the lights around the living room area. This allows us to still watch tv with the lights on from the kitchen if we are cooking but listening / watching the news.

@@SmartHomeSolver the only downside is if you change the lighting after the vibration is detected because then the couch light turns back to whatever the scene sets it to. However punching the cushion for vibration sets it back to low hahaha.

Great video. Love the idea of coverage using multiple motion sensors as well as the dishwasher solution. I have been looking for a good way to alert on clean dishes with home assistant and never thought of a sensor on the door to trigger the notifications.

Great ideas! I have had Smartthings for some time primarily to extend wifi and for the hub ethernet connection for the Roku. I will spend more time with it now especially with the sensors. Didnt know about IKEA. Will look into that. Forgot about SkillShare looked at it a few years ago and forgot. Wish I had thought about it while on lockdown. Good info all around. The Samsung Multipurpose sensor is my favorite IoT device. There is a neat post on the Hubitat forums to turn it into a cheap dry contact sensor, which makes it even more usefull

Thanks Antoan I appreciate it! Yes if you want the announcement when the door is opened then the multipurpose or open/close sensor is needed. So first you would need to create a virtual switch. That’s basically a switch that only exists in the app that you can turn on or off. The button allows you to toggle the virtual switch on and off. Then the automation is simple, IF the virtual switch is on (aka the dishes are clean) AND the open/close sensor is opened, THEN announce on the speaker a warning that the dishes are clean. That way if the dishes are dirty and the door is opened no announcement is made. I hope that makes sense.

It's awesome seeing you guys talk about and creating new automation with Samsung's SmartThings. I'm just sitting here with my dumb IKEA hub an sensors because Samsung won't sell SmartThings in my country :/ I've even stopped buying smart home stuff because it's frustrating having to use google home routines that are way off being automations and the IKEA stuff that are just dumb turn off/turn on sensors or remotes... I have some wi-fi & zigbee plugs, but they are pretty boring to work with as I just use voice to turn lamps on/off

Gps and geofencing with SmartThings is 100% accurate and works 100% of the time. Been using it in the old SmartThings app and even the new one. I have it setup to send notifications everytime a geofencing automation is ran and for the longest time i tracked and made sure. If the geofencing automations were not working i would have known based on how i use it

You might consider subcategories for automation based on 1) large family, 2) a small family, 3) a couple, 4) a single person. Other areas of interest: an older person’s automation needs. Also, deluxe systems with fancy homes vs economy systems. Finally, home ownership vs limitations of rented space. Many people could use some automation but there is rarely anyone in stores to help steering them to appropriate products or guiding them. Some people might buy home security systems when then really need automation. Thanks.

Excellent video, as always. Couple questions, first on the "Left It Open" smartapp: 1. I only see an option to monitor one door/window in the smartapp. Is it possible to monitor multiple doors/windows? 2. How are you making the announcement? I assume you've got stuff going on behind the scenes because I don't see that option w/in the app. For the trigger an Alexa Routine from SmartThings article, can Alexa Guard be triggered on when ST is in away mode?

If you are going to use the SmartApp you would need to create multiple of them. If you did have a lot of window/door sensors you could also use webCoRE. You could do the same thing and have much more flexibility. I'm just receiving the push notification from the SmartApp. Again if you wanted a speaker announcement you could use webCoRE. Yes you could set the Alexa Guard to be triggered from SmartThings using that method. That's a great idea!

Great video and information as always! I have a question on how to automate the bathroom exhaust fan to shut off after 20 min from when it is turned on. I found the setting in the new SmartThings app and went to the device and selected timer and set it to 20 min after turned on. The first time I did this, it worked. Now it doesn't shut the fan off. When I went back in and looked at the settings for this switch, it doesn't show anything is set. Am I missing something?

If you're talking about the "timer" under the switch itself that's only for the one time you set it. You would need to setup something for more advanced automatons. You could run webCoRE right on SmartThings which will allow for you to easily accomplish this along with having the ability for a lot of other more advanced automations. There may be other smartapps available that allow for advanced lighting control as well. I took at look at the "Smart Lighting" smartapp from smartthings but it doesn't seem to be able to accomplish the turn off after 20 minutes of being on.

Hello! I like the idea with the Smarthings outlet power monitoring and I have been thinking about the same/different use cases for the washing machinge, dishwasher, tv etc. but I do not want Google or Alexa to turn of them ever. As we in the family have gotten used to "turn off everything" and turn off specific room. One workaround could be Google homes custom routine, not to turn these off but do you have any other idea or have you encountered this?

Yes a custom routine that turns everything off with a voice command would work well. SmartThings used to have the ability to remove what devices are available to Alexa and Google Assistant. SmartThings updated recently and removed that ability which is frustrating. So yes a custom routine is the best.

Hi Reed. So happy you made another ST video-- especially since the old ST Classic App is going away and we're all forced to migrate and ensure all our existing smart apps work on the new ST app. That being said, had a quick question. I followed your link for creating a Simulated Alexa Switch, and created it via successfully in IDE where I see it on the ST app, however, in the Alexa app, the new simulated switch says "There is a problem" with a red exclamation. Is that normal?

There are some issues going on with the simulated Alexa switch in the last week that I'm looking into. It has only been happening recently and other people have experienced similar issues. I think it's because of SmartThings removing the Classic app connection with Alexa and other changes that are happening. I'm going to be looking into that more today though.

Smart Home Solver - Thanks Reed. FYI- I discovered a way to resolve the error on Alexa when doing the initial setup. Once you add the Device Handler and simulated switch in SmartThings IDE website. BEFORE going into Alexa app to discover device and add a new routine, first go into the SmartThings app (Classic or New) and toggle the newly created Simulated Alexa switch to ON first. Then go into Alexa app to discover new switch. This resolved the error in Alexa for me. Hope this helps.

Smart Home Solver - Hi Reed. So I set up everything shown on 6:47 with Amazon App, but for some reason the routine fails to trigger. From what I can tell, the switches are now synced between the SmartThings app and Alexa App. But when I test the switch by manually turning on the switch, Alexa doesn’t make any announcements. In the new Smartthings app, if you want to add phones as presence sensors, the person still has to have access to your Smartthings account, right? Just asking because it's convenient having my wife added. I wish I could add the step kids, but don't due to the fact that if they had access to the app, their dad, since he hates us, would find some way to blow up my whole house, just to be mean.

Thanks! Oh that's a good question about the phone presence sensor and having access to the app. You bring up a really good point! Let me look into that because I'm sure you're not alone in needing something like this.

Agreed, the classic app was much better. Can't even find IP addresses of devices in the new one. Nice vid, and like the ideas.

I'd also suggest using virtual switches to store "states" and Smartlighting app (as it's IMHO still the only reasonable solution for light automation besides writing own scripts). Together with Smartlighting, I use the virtual switches to override some motion based automations. E.g. if I want to freeze my light setting after I select one (via Ikea remote) and don't want the "on motion detected" automation to kick in (to potentially change my light intensity or even color temperature) I also, before going to bed each day, I use one IKEA TRADFRI switch to turn off all the lights and to keep them turned-off during night (based on one virtual switch I toggle). This switch gets re-set (to "off") each day at 6Am and there's usually anyway enough light after that so my lights will not turn on during day-time (I use LUX value from the HUE Outside motion sensor to enable yet another virtual switch "Daylight" + some hysteresis in place to smooth out the oscillation at the edge-values so the virtual switch doesn't react to minor LUX changes), I also use arrival sensors (despite them being what they are) to enable "welcome lights" at home. But only if there's nobody at home prior to my arrival (yet another virtual switch used there). It wouldn't be nice if my wife is sleeping at home already. I arrive late, and all the lights in the home will turn on :-) I also converted Smartthings leak detector to a power outage monitor (just one normally closed 230V relay plus basic soldering) and I keep my 4G router and Smartthings Hub and Arlo system running out of UPS so I know when there's some power outage at my house :-) And yes I bend the Smartthings a lot. And yes I could rather write the scripts, but I still find it more manageable to use UI. PS: I run somewhere around 70zigbee devices in my house. And some other creative solutions besides those I described already...

Do you have to setup a "Low Battery" routine for each device (i.e. 3 motion sensors and 3 buttons and 4 multi-purpose sensors equal 10 separate routines)? I would've thought a Low Battery notification/alert or indicator light on the applicable device was standard.

Hello. Thanks for your videos, they are awesome. I have one Philips Hue bridge, which is Zigbee compatible, but I'm heaving lots to connect other devices to my network, specially non Philips Hue presence sensors and buttons, and that's why I'm thinking of buying one native Zigbee bridge to plug Zigbee devices (non Philips Hue devices), but I'm in doubt which brand/bridge should I do it... What do you recommend (I'm looking for easy to integrate and use with different brands, ... I'M NOT looking for the less expensive). Thanks in advance. (PS: My instance of HomeAssistant is running in a Docker Container of my Ubuntu Home server)

Wi primary use apple devices, google hub, hue lights up and eufy cameras. I’m going to get into Lutron Caseta switches but would like your input on which sensors I should use? I was going to get smart things but I use apple products and don’t know how well smart things and HomeKit integrate? Thanks, love the video’s!

Thanks Corey! I like HomeKit but I don't know a lot of sensors that work with it. I looked for some in the past and I didn't find a whole lot. Maybe it's gotten better recently. That's a big reason I use SmartThings. I know SmartThings isn't integrated into the Apple devices like HomeKit but the app still works well. And if you get everything automated you hopefully don't have to use the app too often.

I use a magnet with two side ,one green for clean red for dirty .. switch side when emptying fisher or put it on.

Is it me or have the Smartthings motion sensors from Samsung disappeared? Nobody seems to have them - I’ll check out the IKEA ones, maybe if I order a couple I can get some free meatballs! Congrats on the Skillshare sponsorship.

You don't need the clean/dirty button and vibration detector for dishwasher, you can use smart plug with power consumption monitoring and create algo to know if washer is working or not, and when it stops.

Thanks so much for the ideas! Love the refrigerator idea, but I am at a bit of a loss. I downloaded the app and it notifies me if the door is open, bi to want it to set off siren or change light color. The app doesn’t allow for that, any ideas?

Hello Smart Home Solver, I wonder if you could give me some suggestion on how to approach using motion sensors to detect intruders in the back yard mostly at night. I am trying to use the AEON MUTI SENSOR 6 but it isn't working well. I have read the instructions that say they don't work well outside. But I was trying it anyway. The problem is they either send out false alerts when there was not person or animal around, OR I can walk by it 4 or 5 times and it just doesn't send out the motion alert at all. So my question is what do you suggest for spotting people at night? I'm also using NEST OUTDOOR IQ but they also prove to be unreliable. Seems like that has to be a good solution to this. I'm ready to go old school and tie a trip-string to a bunch of tin cans LOL. Thoughts?

Is it necessary to have Philips hue hub if you have Samsung SmartThings Hub and is SSTH compatible with Apple Home?

the xiaomi aqara stuff is awesome and cheap as beans. battery life lasts forever. I have about 20 motion sensors that I hacked to have a cooldown of only 5 seconds and after 2 years they are still running strong on the same battery that they shipped with! best thing they work with everything else! Home assistant!

With a dishwasher, you don't need a button for "clean", since the vibration sensor can auto-reset it. With buttons for both "clean" and "dirty" (or a toggle button if there's an indicator) wouldn't require a vibration sensor.
